Prologue

There were many things going through my mind when I saw them. One was to choke the life out of him; the other was to run away and never show myself. But never had I thought about crying as I watched the man I trusted and loved did the most painful betrayal.

It was a week away from our third anniversary. On a series of rare occasion, I arrived at our apartment earlier than I used to. Whenever that happened I would text Alden, my now infamous ex, that I was going home early. However, I wasn’t in the mood of texting or calling anyone what with the argument I had with my boss this morning. I thought the place I called home was the one escape I could go to without feeling like the world was against me. But that day, I never expected my world to flip like it did.

I entered the apartment with thoughts of sleeping in for the rest of the day. A few feet away - in the bed I actually sleep - I suddenly heard grunting noises. At first, my thoughts were it wasn’t in my apartment and our neighbor was having an early round of sexercise with her man of the week. Little did I know, it was my own man whose having his own sexcapde marathon.

Entering the room, I felt like my eyes were drenched with acid seeing a familiar girl riding him like a cow girl - for lack of better word. My reflex action was to throw my Coach bag towards them since they were otherwise preoccupied to notice I was even in the room.

“WHAT THE HELL?!”

The girl sitting on the crotch of my boyfriend turned around with a startled look on her face. It was Mallory Cornfield. Of all the girls he chose to cheat with, it had to be the girl I hated throughout college.

“GET THE HELL OUT OF MY APARTMENT, YOU SLUT!”

Surprised at being caught, she at least had the decency to pick up her clothes and scurry out of the place. When we were finally alone, Alden still had the nerve to speak like nothing happened.

“Kyla, you’re home early...” Alden’s voice was still breathy from the raucous act.

“That’s all you’re going to say? I’m home early you cheating SHIT!” I took off my shoes and threw one in his direction. When it didn’t hit him, I took off the other and hit his arm.

“I want your shitty ass out of my apartment by the time I get back here tomorrow. If you don’t, I’ll call Marie’s brothers over and have your ass kicked out by them! Do you hear me?!”

Alden flinched and could only muster a nod in response.

I couldn’t look at him any longer. The feeling of tiredness and stress had increasingly accumulated. Since I could no longer sleep on that bed without seeing the image ingrained in my head, I took a cab and headed back to the hotel I worked, booking a room using my staff discount.

Even though that was nearly three months ago, I still couldn’t bring myself to move on. I was hurt bad. I’m not sure I could trust a man the same way again. Not after that. Not after him. Then my friend thought it was time to find a good rebound, no strings attached, one night stand with a stranger to wash away all of my pent up frustration. Hence, it led me to sit in a bar while I’m starting to regret on agreeing at this so called ‘game’.
