Prologue
I grew up in a coastal village near Cape Cod. My dad taught me to sail as a child on a wide hulled 14-foot Cat Boat. Later, as a teenager, on a thirty-six foot, gaff rig schooner, he trained me to navigate by dead reckoning through pea soup fog, Cape Cod to Buck’s Harbor, Maine.
The natural force of wind sets a sailboat in motion. The direction of the wind determines its course. To discover the boat’s current position, use its previous locations and advance them based on the boat’s speed, time and its course. Dead Reckoning.
Unforeseen, natural forces set my life in motion from a mother and wife in New Jersey, to sailing solo through the Aegean Sea. Looking back at it now, yes, seven positions determined my current position.
