When we met

It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.

I remember the first time I read this quote, in that moment I thought this author was more insane than the homeless cat lady that lives at the end of the street. But now, things are different, everything I knew has been proved to be as solid as the last ash of that cigarette that you smoked and then fell carelessly out of your hand.

I didn’t imagine I was gonna get as lost as young Athenians got lost in the Cretan Labyrinth. I was a normal girl. Or so I thought, until the moment I met him, Eryl Braddock. He was no superheroe, he didn’t wear one of those weird suits they wear but his charming smile made me freeze for at least 5 minutes straight. No kidding.

And our first conversation, well let’s just say it was as awkward as telling your mom you just got your first period.

There I was, buying my regular coffee as I did every morning, the small but cozy café was only disturbed by a few people, the old lady behing the counter was making sure the pastries in the oven didn’t get burned and I was about to purchase the last Pecan Caramel Swirl Danish, my favorite, when a hand got in the way, leaving me so shocked and disappointed I thought I was gonna burst in tears.

“Thank you ma’am, I’m sure it will be delicious” Mister-steal-your-danish said, I only looked at him and let out a sigh, turning around and searching for a nice seat next to the windows.

Suddenly I heard someone chuckle and the following thing that happened: a pecan caramel swirl danish was being placed in front of me.

“What the h-” I began to say.

“You’re welcome.” Said the danish thief with his precious smile once again.

“You don’t have to do that, I have one of these practically every day” He contemplated me for a second before shrugging and answering.

“Well, I’m pretty sure you will enjoy it more than me. Take it, cocciuta.” I almost spilled my coffee.

“Cocci-what? Did you just insult me?” It was an understandment to say I was confused as hell.

“No, I didn’t Danish Girl. Gustare il dolce” He winked. And just like that he was gone, and oxygen left with him.
