Chapter 1

Dawn. Such a beautiful time of day. After the darkness and coldness of night. After the uneasy feeling of not being aware of what’s around you. After the loneliness of solitude of night, dawn comes. The sun always comes up to make everything bright and colorful again. It never fails to give you warmth. Never fails to guide you. It always shows up again.

What a great metaphor for life. Even the darkest and most dreadful of times never lasts. There will always be the sun to help you out. Bring life back to everything and brighten your world. Must be nice.

My mom would always tell me how I would meet my sunshine some day. They’d complete me and they would make me happy. They’d bring light to my life through my roughest times. They’d be my “dawn.” They would love me more than anyone else ever could and I would love them too.

Mom always loved to talk about love. She believed so strongly in soulmates. She would talk about many metaphors of what it’s like to find true love. I didn’t really understand or believe all of them but I never told her any of that because every time she’d talk about she would light up. She was so passionate about love. She gave me so much hope.

My sunshine came. Mom never got to meet him. She never got see her son find true love. The thing she wanted most for me. She never got to see me walk down the aisle and she was never able to see that he was my sunshine. The sunshine she would always tell me about.

But just like the sun does every evening, he went away. He’s now finally able to meet mom. She’s now finally able to meet my love. I hope you’re proud of me, mom. I loved him very much and he treated me really well. We’ll meet again. And when we do, we’ll fly away together.
