Prologue

1879: Afghanistan

“The base is under attack!”

The sound of explosive are can be heard not too far. And as time passes, the sound gradually gets louder.

The people, dressed in similar olive drab, are getting ready on the incoming attack of the enemies – they are running in the same direction; with their guns in hand, they are firing toward the people on the other side.

“Everyone get your guns and get into your positions! The priority is the safety of the doctors! Buckle yourselves!”

Different noises are in every corner of the place. The continuous ringing of the sirens. The voice of their commands. The resounding noise of different kinds of guns. And the blasts of explosions.

But even though with all the different noises, there is one voice resonated as much louder than anything – of a soldier finding the doctor in the middle of war.

“Raina! Where are you?!”

One soldier holding his gun while calling, desperately, the name of his heart’s other half.

He is bumping into the other soldiers and running in the different direction as everyone – while voice get louder as seconds passes.

In his minutes of shouting and running, finally, she answered his words.

“Adam!”

As soon as he heard the voice, he quickly followed it with a small smile gradually seen in his face – a smile of relief for her.

“Adam…”

The voice continues to call him but every second passes, the tone of the voice gradually getting lost to the noises of the war.

‘Where are you?’

He run and look at every tent he see, finding the person he is longing to see – with those words stay in his thought, his smile gradually fade as worry fill all over himself.

“Raina! Please answer me! Where are you?”

His feet doesn’t stop as his voice continue to speak up words – and his hand in the gun firing on every enemy show up on his face; trying to stop him finding her but no one succeeded.

“Adam?”

He suddenly stops in front of a tent. The voice sounded raw and much clearer as he get closer to the tent. He quickly gets inside the tent and, thankfully, found his other half.

“Raina!”

But when he notices a pool of blood, he panic. The doctor is laying with her cheek against the cold ground. Many bullet holes are all over the doctor’s body – even though with the bulletproof vest; she is over; it is all over.

The wounded soldier quickly gets in front of the doctor and looking at every shot the doctor got – checking her pulse and slowly gives up a sigh.

“Adam?”

When he looks to the face of the dying doctor, he noticed that she is not looking straight to him – like she can’t see him right in front of her.

“Adam? Are you here? Please… answer me…”

He carefully took the hand of his dying doctor and gradually lowers his head to kiss the back of his doctor’s hand – while uttering words close to the doctor’s hand.

“Yes, I am here now… Don’t worry… I will never leave your side…”

As he see the doctor gradually relax, He slowly sat down and carefully carry the dying doctor on his side – letting her lean beside him.

There is silence engulfing the atmosphere inside the tent that looks like they are listening to the situation outside of their own box.

The dying doctor is the one that broke the silence in between of them.

“I am scared…”

The dying soldier doesn’t move his head as he slowly raise his right hand on the head of his dying doctor – carefully brush her hair while uttering and answering every word of his only companion.

“It is gonna be okay… It will end soon…”

“Adam…”

“Hmm?”

“There is something I need to tell you… about my answer…”

A small smile gradually is can be seen in the face of the dying soldier as he ask question toward the words of the dying doctor.

“What is it?”

Another silence engulf just before the dying doctor started to speak up – a soft whisper through the loud noise in their surroundings.

“I love you…”

The smile of the dying soldier widens up as the soft whisper of his doctor – but then he responded with question.

“What did you say?”

“Being stubborn until the end, huh?”

“I think the noises finally get into me that I can’t hear your words”

A soft sigh exited on the lips of the dying doctor as she slowly whisper another words.

“I’m not gonna repeat it…”

The dying soldier chuckle a little that end up a coughing with blood fall into his left palm.

His eyes are getting blurry and her mind is getting off.

The dying doctor took a soft breathe before she finally relax herself – leaning on the shoulder of his dying soldier and gradually closing her eyes with a small smile printed in her face.

The eyes of the dying soldier gradually fading out of consciousness – but before he let out a soft words right, as he lean into the top of his doctor’s head, straight through the ear of the dying doctor.

Obsidian: He's hilarious. Like, actually. I loved it. You're writing style is great, although you could do with a few less murmurs and mutters. I know it sounds critical, but I have the same problem and I hate it. Overall, it was one of the best stories I've read on here so far. I liked it better than those M...
