Usual loneliness

I was wide awake before the maid came to knock on the door to my chambers for the morning.

"Thank you, Marine. I'll be down shortly."

I sat up on my bed and looked around my room, colorless and quiet as usual. Just like my life has been for the past two months.

You're still wondering why I was polite to a maid. Even though I am a 22 year old Lord of the mansion Strange, one of the powerful and respectable families in the whole country?

Well, I always respected the servants in the house because my parents groomed me that way. Steve Strange and Iris Strange, both groomed Alexander Strange to respect the servants and maids the way they said he expected to be respected.

"Remember, treat the people you expect yourself to be treated." Iris smiled and I snapped out of my thoughts when I remembered her beautiful smile. My life will never be the same.

After having breakfast in the garden, I was walking with my most trusted servant that I reviewed him as my best friend, about today's chores.

"... and you finally have a dinner with the De Mans family", says Sammy when he was done informing me.

"Do I have to go?" Sammy didn't had to hear the distaste in my voice because he was aware than any man on earth why I don't like these dinners with other families. As soon as the word of my inheritance got out, the other families have been trying to get their daughters married so they could get a rise in their reputation. Yes, I am the youngest Lord of on the richest and respectable families but I am not a fool to not see that one coming.

"There's always a way to turn down the proposal and you have your way with it." He smiled as we took our stroll. He was right. I had turned down about two proposals and this one would mark a strike.

"Would you like me to have your favorite dessert prepared after that dinner? I will join you if you would like", he glanced at me.

I couldn't help myself but smile. "You know me so well." And yes, I occasionally eat with my servants and maids, trying to feel better and truly at home as I used to. It works but not as effectively as I want it to be.

I walked into the kitchen and told the head chef about tonight's plans and she went back to work with a smile. I have to hand it to him, he treated us as his companions, not servants like all the other family heads do. But I feel bad for him, I miss the old happy and cheery him, but the trust is, after his parents' death, we are all shook. We all loose a part of ourselves--

My thoughts got interrupted when I bumped into one of the maids. I was about to apologize but I froze when I saw who it was. The most beautiful face, the most stunning dark green eyes with blonde hair and a lovely smile, accompanied by a figure of an hour glass and those pouty lips and dimples whenever she smiled. I could get lost in those features forever.

"Sorry", she mildly bowed her head apologetically and was about to be on her way.

"Oh, no! I mean, I'm sorry, I was just lost in my thoughts. I am truly sorry, Rachel..." Rachel. Her name like a name of an angel. But I soon realized that she was staring at me to say something. I tried to say something but couldn't and she turned around and went on her way.

Yeah, I'll never get myself to talk to her...

" Are the cookies ready?!"

"Just a minute!"

I took out a tray of warm and freshly baked biscuits from the oven and sniffed them before taking them to the counter for today's afternoon display.

"What's next, mom?"

"We have to bake three dozen doughnuts for the Maynard Manson" my mom said as she skimmed through the order list.

"Three dozen?! That's gonna take the whole evening!"

"I'm sorry child but we have to do this to keep the bakery working and to ourselves."

This bakery, it was everything my mother and I had left from my father who passed away half a decade ago. My parents are both renowned bakers but after dad's death, the place lost it's touch and we have been trying to bring it back ever since.

More than half of the savings go to the bank so we could keep my father's last memory to ourselves. I don't know what's the problem of the bank anyways? We have to pay the dues every month and they won't give us a break. It's been hard to focus on our personal lives because of this.

OH, I forgot! I am Elizabeth Olivia Schuyler, daughter of Phillip and Ingrid Schuyler, owner of Schuyler Bakery. I am a 21 year old, dark haired girl who loves to read and how do I satisfy my love for reading from all this? Well I save whatever I can from the tips I collect and without asking, my mom helps me too.

I just want to do something so we could enjoy our lives again and be happy. My mom maybe smiling assurignly to me that everything will be alright but I know very well that she is sad and worried and tired and she misses dad.

So, I promised myself that I'll find a way to help her and make her happy. Even if I have to become a maid to some stupid old Lord of some creepy mansion. Let's hope the Lord is nice and the mansion is not creepy. I hate creepy stuff.
