A small Gift

Evan stared at Winter from afar. The teen was running away from a small group of younger children. She seemed to have fun; probably because only in speed she could outdo them. Evan’s gaze returned to his book, but he got interrupted right away by Winter.

“Stay away, you little monsters!” the redhead squealed hiding behind Evan. Funny enough, the children’s attack really did stop and they retreated begrudgingly. After all, nobody wanted Evan as their enemy, who knows what he would do.

“What is this?” Winter asked curiously taking away Evan’s book… She gave it a quick look and threw it back on his lap.” You are always reading about spells and potions! Would it kill you to read stories from time to time?”

Evan simply shook his head in negative, earning a disappointed sigh from Winter. He put his book inside his bag, full attention on the older girl in front of him. She was humming a strange tune, one he always heard her hum countless times already. “Where is that song from?” Evan asked. Winter smiled at him, that big cute smile Evan only saw when either him or his father were around; a smile that belonged to them.

“A friend taught it to me” Winter answered, fixing her glasses “There were lyrics, too but she left before I could learn them”

“Really?” Winter nodded, her eyes tinged a little with sadness “Can’t you talk to her?”

“We had this big fight… I don’t think she considers me her friend anymore”

Seeing Winter getting suddenly sad, Evan felt a little guilty for bringing it up. Fast, he took out from his bag some potions and ingredients. Winter’s curious look was intense, as if she tried to burn the moment in her memory. Evan finished mixing up everything in a jar, then sheepishly handed it to Winter. Surprised, Winter blinked dumbly.

“What is this? I mean… Why you’re giving me something out of the blue?” Clearly unaccustomed to receiving things, Winter blushed and didn’t know what to do with herself. Evan smiled, happy to have distracted her from the sad memory.

“A small gift to cheer you up whenever you feel sad” Evan explained encouraging Winter to open the bottle “It will always refill itself”

Winter opened the jar and from it rushed out a spectacle of colors, sounds and shapes; all beautiful and magical. They surrounded Winter, then Evan before returning into the jar. Winter giggled, happily embracing Evan and spinning him around until both fell to the ground.

“Thank you” She hugged the jar with a huge smile. “I love it”

That day, Evan spent the rest of the day feeling fuzzy and warm inside. He didn’t even know he could feel that way, but the feeling was welcomed in his heart.
