Shadows Within
(Rayne)
I lay restrained atop a cold metal table, the chill seeping into my bones. Harsh fluorescent lights burned above me, so bright they blurred everything into white streaks and shadows.
Figures loomed above me, their features obscured in shadows, while my sensitive ears were flooded with an array of sounds: metal scraping against metal, the heavy thud of cabinet doors being flung open, and the relentless wail of a siren echoing in the background.
“We have to hurry, they’ve arrived,” a figure spoke in a hurried, breathless tone.
The figures moved around me in frantic bursts, their faces hidden behind the glare. I couldn’t make sense of them, but something about this place tugged at me with sick familiarity, like a memory buried too deep to fully reach.
“I have to do this right, or everything will be for naught,” another voice chimed in, belonging to a figure clad in a crisp white coat, his expression tense and focused.
“Hold her down,” he commanded, his voice firm.
Suddenly, a strong hand wrapped around my wrist, pinning me in place, while a sharp prick stabbed into my arm. I flinched, the sudden pain jolting through me like electricity.
“Quiet her!” the man in the white coat exclaimed, urgency heightening his tone.
Before I could fully process the situation, something pliable was shoved into my mouth, cutting off my cries. Panic surged through me as I fought to expel the object, but a shadowy hand pressed it firmly in place, holding my head steady.
I squirmed in their grasp, but went still when a rush of air swept over me, causing a chill to run down my spine.
A tall figure materialized beside the white coat, their presence dominating the room.
“How much longer?” the figure demanded, their voice deep and gravelly, tinged with impatience.
“I need more tim—” the white coat began, but was abruptly cut off by distant roars that reverberated through the walls, plunging the room into a tense silence.
Shouts erupted from outside, followed by the unmistakable sound of gunfire. The figures around me scattered instantly, rushing past each other in a blind panic. Many of them vanished into the shadows, leaving only the white coat, the figure helping him, and the tall figure hovering near my side.
“Damn it! You don’t have any more time,” the tall figure cursed, eyes flashing with urgency. “Pack up everything and get her out of here, now!”
“I just need a few more samples! If they take her, we won’t get another chance,” the white coat argued, desperation edging his voice.
A brief, tense pause followed before the tall figure replied, “Fine, I’ll try and buy you some time, but hurry!”
With that, he burst from the room, the force of his departure creating a gust of wind that rustled my hair.
“Keep her still. I need to fill another vial,” the white coat commanded, his grip tightening around my wrist as he prepared the needle. The sharp pressure of the needle left my skin, and my arm was swiftly wrapped in a bandage, a stark contrast to the chaos surrounding us.
“Here, take these vials and get out of here,” the white coat said urgently, shoving several glass containers into the hands of the figure beside him. “You can’t be caught, you understand me? Get them to—”
He was cut off once more by the growing roars outside, now echoing almost directly outside the room.
Hastily passing something to the figure next to him, the white coat insisted, “Get out of here.”
“Yes, sir,” a female voice replied, steady yet urgent, before I felt myself being yanked off the table.
As I was carried away, the blinding lights seemed to beam down on me from every angle, and I instinctively closed my eyes against their harsh brightness, my heart racing in sync with the chaos around us.
When the sounds of fighting abruptly faded into an unnerving silence, I cautiously reopened my eyes. I found myself standing amidst a sea of towering trees, their gnarled branches twisting into a dense canopy above. Hadn’t I just been in a clinic of some kind?
Bewildered by the sudden shift in my surroundings, I shouted, “Hello?” My voice echoed weakly, swallowed by the thick air of the forest. There was no reply. Unsure of what to do next, I took a hesitant step forward, moving aimlessly into the green abyss.
My bewilderment quickly morphed into a gnawing unease as an eerie sensation of being watched crept up my spine. Something was off. The forest was shrouded in a deathly stillness. The wind had ceased its whisper, and the usual chorus of chirping bugs was absent, leaving only the thumping of my heart echoing in my ears.
I halted, a cold dread settling in my stomach as I reached out to my other half, only to find her gone. Panic surged through me, making my already fast heartbeat pound frantically against my ribcage. What was happening?
I scanned the forest floor, my senses heightened, convinced that eyes were upon me. But the underbrush revealed nothing—no movement, no signs of life.
“Hello! Is anyone out there?” I called again, desperation threading through my voice as I pleaded with the indifferent trees.
A savage growl resonated from the shadows behind me, sending icy dread through my veins. I whirled around, my breath hitching in my throat.
My heart dropped to my stomach as a Shifter unlike any I’d encountered before emerged from the undergrowth. Its blood-red eyes locked onto mine, holding my gaze with an unyielding intensity. Inky shadows swirled and rippled around it, shifting like smoke as it moved with an unsettling grace. Massive jaws, lined with countless jagged teeth, twisted into a menacing snarl, exuding a power so wild and ancient that it felt like a tempest. It radiated dominance, demanding absolute obedience—an instinctual response ignited within me, urging me to flee.
“Who are you? What do you want?” I managed to question, my voice trembling despite my efforts to sound brave. My legs were poised, ready to bolt at any moment.
The creature seemed to sense my fear, taking several daunting steps toward me. Another growl rumbled from its throat, deep and resonant, vibrating through the very ground beneath my feet.
“You,” it replied, its voice sonorous and laced with authority, the single word dripping with unfiltered ferocity.
Every fiber of my being screamed for me to escape. I didn’t wait for a second longer; my instincts kicked in, propelling me forward into the tangled underbrush.
An angry roar erupted behind me, followed by the sound of trees splintering into a thousand pieces. I didn’t dare look back as I raced across the uneven terrain, the foliage slapping against my legs. The forest seemed to close in around me, but I pressed on, adrenaline fueling my flight. The unsettling quiet of my pursuer’s steps sent chills down my spine, but I refused to glance over my shoulder.
Finally, my eyes caught sight of a silhouette in the distance—a house, its familiar shape breaking the oppressive gloom of the forest. Hope surged within me, and I propelled myself toward it, desperate for refuge.
As I approached, a familiar figure stood on the porch, bathed in the dim light spilling from the doorway.
“Rayne!”
Reese raced down the porch steps, his expression shifting from confusion to concern as he tried to close the distance between us.
“Ree-!” His name was ripped from my lips.
Knife-like claws dug deep, piercing through my clothes and embedding themselves into my flesh. I gasped, the air rushing from my lungs as shadows blackened my vision.
