Chapter 1

It was dawn, but the sky wasn't visible through the shriveled ashes that were dancing across the sky.

There was the faint figure of a dragon laying under a coating of gray, his left wing spread behind his back and his jaw was twisted horribly. The dragon rested soullessly on the floor, accompanied by many other corpses, the aftermath of a volcanic eruption.

As all seemed to be lost for the NightWings, only few remained that weren't taken to the rainforest.

There was a twitch in a bed of ashes, a wing that shivered awake. A figure shook the ashes off of itself, its pitch black eyes opening painfully. The dragon groaned, he felt as if he had been asleep for a million years. His muscles were sore and he felt weaker than he'd ever been before.

The dragon lied in his grave, his sharp black eyes closing once again, perhaps he was unlucky to survive the eruption. After all, who'd want to live in those conditions?

"Morrowseer?" Hissed a familiar voice from afar, a dark figure appearing in the distance. "Is t-that you?"

His eyes snapped open and he jerked back to consciousness, peering to his side as he saw the familiar figure. Pain surged through his whole body and he shivered, craning his neck farther.

"By all moons..." she croaked, bounding towards him, her talons skidding across the dark gray stone, covered in gray. She halted in front of him nervously, her talons shaking.

Futurestar? Morrowseer asked himself internally, his black eyes squinting at the small figure that approached him. She was smiling sheepishly, clearly excited to see another dragon alive. The young dragonet blew the ashes away from on top of him, her glittery wings spread backwards. Her eyes sparkled with glee as she stared down at him in disbelief.

Morrowseer rolled over on his side, every bone in his body ached, it was unbearable. "Where are the dragonets?" He questioned without hesitation, his voice clearly angry.

"The... dragonets?" She asked, squinting at him before snapping to attention. "Oh, yes, the dragonets. They fled through the portal, along with most of the NightWings."

"Gah..." Morrowseer mumbled under his breath, feeling an overwhelming pain strike his face.

She brushed a luminescent spark from his snout, staring at him sideways. "My name is Futurestar, if you had... forgotten."

"Yes, yes, I know that." He growled, attempting to sit upright, it felt as if every bone was cracking as he moved.

"If you're wondering how you got to this spot, to prevent you from drowning, one of the members of the NightWing Rebellion brought you here."

"The NightWing Rebellion?" Morrowseer questioned.

"Yes. We are the ones who are still loyal to Queen Battlewinner, the other traitors fled." Futurestar gestured her talons, sitting in front of him.

He coughed, staring into his niece's eyes. Futurestar was the daughter of Morrowseer's brother, Darkfire, who had been supposedly killed in the eruption.

"The dragonets thought they caught all of us to be sent to the rainforest, but we are too bold for that! Hah, we fooled them!" She chuckled, wheezing uncomfortably.

He glanced at her and she grinned, wrapping her tiny wings around him. Morrowseer grunted in response and rose to his talons, his stomach was groaning. "How long have I been unconscious?" He bellowed, his serious glare giving Futurestar shivers.

"Uh... um..." She mumbled, avoiding his gaze. "I've lost track, heh... I'm horrible with keeping times."

He hissed at her and she leaped back, his huge talons crushing the shriveled gray ashes that coated what was left of the ground. The smog around him was too thick to see through, but what was there to see beyond it? Everything had been destroyed.

"Anyways," she snorted, looking up at him. "We should go meet with the others, they'll be glad to see you."

She bounded forwards, her small figure slowly drifting into the darkness that surrounded the area. He replaced her claw prints with his, storming after her.
