Chapter 1 - Evelyn
"Ugh." Evelyn groaned as she heard Delila calling her to wake up. Reluctantly, she stood from her bed and stretched.
"Good morning, mil lady. Recall, you have a consultation with King Levine along with Queen Levine, concerning the important message a resident of the kingdom has."
Evelyn groaned even more. "Why must I go? Can not mother and father handle this?"
Delila gave her a sad smile and approached her. "It is not within my reach to take you away from the consultation, mil lady. Please, promise me you'll behave. I'm sure you will not want to hear Queen Levine complain of being late."
Evelyn smiled at her maiden and nodded before heading to her bathroom. After bathing, Delila helped Evelyn into her crinolette dress. Evelyn sat still as she allowed her to brush and curl her pure white waist-length hair into a half-up, half-down hairstyle. Delila applied Evelyn's makeup and carefully placed her bright diamond tiara atop of her head.
"There you are, mil lady."
"Thank you, Delila." Evelyn thanked before rushing to the throne room.
"Evelyntina Relilatine Ferron Levine! What in the werewolf kingdom were you doing that made you so late?! We have been waiting patiently for you. Honestly, dear, you must not be this irresponsible. If you are to be queen, we need you to be responsible and ready for any fight." Evelyn's mother, Annesley ranted as Evelyn walked toward her throne. Annesley has fire red hair with Evelyn's bright green eyes.
"I am sorry, mother. I slept a little late."
"Give the girl a break. She's seventeen. She's going to be late from time to time." Her father, Lupin defended.
Evelyn sighed and sat on her throne to the right. Evelyn dreads the day she becomes queen. From what she's seen, being queen will take away her time to shift into her wolf and run through the kingdom's gardens. Evelyn doesn't remember the last time she's seen her mother turn into a wolf. She's been to busy with her duties. Being seventeen means Evelyn will become queen in six months, on her birthday.
After a while, the throne room's door was opened and a resident in the kingdom came in with two royal guards at her side.
"State your name and reason to be here." Queen Levine said in her royal voice.
The girl hung her head low as she spoke. "I-I am Yevette Arlo. A vam-vampire from the Halifax Kingdom approached me."
"And what did it say?" King Levine spoke up.
"It t-told me to inform the royal family, th-that King Isaiah Halifax plans to attack the Levine Kingdom. In an attempt to kill the royal werewolf family and kill every werewolf."
Evelyn heard her mother let out a soft animalistic growl. She knew her mother's wolf was furious about the news. But, her mother remained calm after years of practicing in controlling her wolf.
"Thank you for informing me. You are dismissed." Yevette nodded quickly scurried out of the throne room. Queen Levine looked over at the royal guards. "Find this vampire running around the werewolf kingdom. They passed the boundaries. They know the rule, so they must suffer the consequences. Kill it."
The guards nodded and left the throne room. Evelyn was unsure of her mother's demand. It doesn't feel right to kill the vampire. It only came here to warn us, it should be awarded. Not lynched.
"Mother? Do you believe it is best to lynch the vampire?" Evelyn inquired.
Her mother turned to her with look disapproval. "Evelyn, you know the rules between the werewolves and vampires. They do not cross the barrier for absolutely no reason, and neither do we. It is punishable by death."
Evelyn sighed and stood. "If this is the only reason I was called here, I'll take my leave." Not waiting for a reply, Evelyn stormed out the throne room and made her way to her chambers.
"This isn't fair. The vampire should not be lynched." Evelyn voiced her thoughts to Delila.
She sighed. "This vampire knew the rules. It knew what it was getting into when it crossed the barrier. Would you like to let your wolf out, mil lady?"
Evelyn nodded with a frown. They both made their way to the kingdom's gardens. Usually, Evelyn would change out of her corset. But she was upset right now. So, instead, Evelyn ripped her skin along with her dress and broke her bones in one swift movement as she changed into her bright white wolf.
Evelyn nodded at Delila before running deeper into the gardens. The wind that whipped past her felt amazing on her snow-white fur. Evelyn looked around the woods for her favorite spot to sit and relax.
But something interrupted this elegant feeling. A force hit her side making Evelyn fall into a tree. The tree snapped and fell backward, away from her.
From the pain, Evelyn shifted back in her human form. She groaned as she opened her eyes and looked around for what hit her. Once the pain went down and Evelyn didn't see anyone, she shifted back in her wolf. With her sense of smell more heightened than it already was, she was able to easily smell what hit her.
Once she realized who it was, she rolled her emerald wolf eyes. C'mon out, Robin, Evelyn said through her wolf mind link.
A ruby red wolf, resembling her mother's, came from behind a tree and approached Evelyn. Hey sis. What's got you riled up, Evelyn's little sister asked.
They both began to talk through the gardens. Well, a vampire came and warned a wolf here about King Halifax planning on ambushing the Levine Kingdom. Mother decided to have the vampire killed, Evelyn responded.
So? Vampires aren't supposed to-
Cross the barrier. Yeah, I know. But it only crossed to tell us about King Halifax. It should be awarded, Eveylen interrupted.
I guess. Let's not think about that right now. Wanna race, Robin suggested.
Yeah.
The two sisters snarled at each other before they took off running. Evelyn wasn't really focussed on winning the race, more of letting go of the thoughts that were screaming at her. She stopped thinking about the vampire and started to think of Isaiah. What if the vampire was wrong and Isaiah isn't really planning to attack? The werewolves and vampires have lived in peace for two centuries now. It doesn't make sense that now King Halifax plans to attack.
Once Evelyn felt a nudge on her side, she turned and saw her little sister looking at her with worried eyes. Are you ok, Lyn? What are you thinking about?
Nothing. Who won, Evelyn, asked as she looked around.
I did obviously, Robin responded smugly
Evelyn rolled her wolf eyes. Let's go back home. Robin nodded and took off running beside Evelyn. When they made it back, they tried to stay discreet in their wolf forms as they walked to their rooms in the castle. Robin was a smaller wolf, so she was hiding behind things easily. Evelyn on the other hand was huge and had trouble hiding.
"Evelyn and Robin!" The sisters sighed and turned around, just to see their mother glaring at them. "You know you are not allowed to be in your wolf forms inside of this castle." They both slowly backed away. "Don't you dare run."
Swiftly, they both whipped around and took off running. Once they heard the sound of bones cracking and clothes ripping, they knew their mother shifted to her wolf.
Suddenly, both Evelyn and Robin were knocked over on their backs. They looked up to see their mother's bright red wolf snarling above them.
Go to your rooms and change. Now, Annesley demanded.
Hurriedly, they turned over and ran to their rooms. Once Evelyn was alone in her room, she shifted back into a human and chuckled. She dressed in a simple keyhole blue dress with a white cardigan. After slipping on her white flats, she made her way to her favorite room in the castle.
Evelyn went inside and locked the door behind her. Turning back to the inside of the room, a grin spread across her face as she stared in awe at the piano that belonged to her grandmother, the queen before her mother.
Evelyn sat on the white piano bench. The grand piano was huge with its porcelain white color. She slowly played a C chord, before she played an Am and an F. A soft smile crept on her face as she played these chords repeatedly. Before moving on to an eight-note and a slanted beamed eight note. After playing a G chord, she heard clapping behind her.
She turned her head to see her father's brother leaning on the doorframe with a smirk. "Uncle David, good evening." Evelyn greeted as she stood.
"Good evening, Lyn. I see you getting better at the piano." David pointed out as he approached her. He and his brother have raven black hair with midnight blue eyes.
Evelyn shrugged and sat back down with David joining her. "Most likely I won't be able to play the piano anymore. I'm becoming a queen in six months. That's too close for my liking."
David chuckled at her. "Six months isn't that close, Lyn. You have plenty of times to do anything you want."
Evelyn sighed, "I guess you're right. Robin's lucky, she's just thirteen. She has plenty of time to do whatever she wants."
David chuckled again. "So do you. In fact, wanna go shoot some arrows?"
Eagerly, she nodded and stood. Evelyn went to her room and changed into her archery clothes before meeting her uncle in the archer field. The werewolves in the Levine Kingdom have a special way of doing archery. Instead of just shooting an arrow at a target, they aim the bow and arrow, and right after the fire, they shift into their wolves and have to catch the arrow before it makes it's way to the target. Whoever brings it back first, wins.
Once the targets were set up, Evelyn and David got their arrows pointed at the target and pulled the drawstring. As soon as they both fired, they swiftly shifted and took after their arrows. Evelyn tore her eyes off the arrow and looked at her uncle's raven black wolf. But, with that distraction, her arrow hit the center of the target.
David jumped up and grabbed his arrow with his teeth and as soon as he landed, he whipped around and ran back to where they stood. Evelyn snarled in frustration before pulling her arrow out of the target with her teeth and running over with him.
You're getting slower, Lyn. What's bothering you, David asked through the mind link.
It's just this whole thing with King Isaiah planning to attack. Evelyn noticed David tense but decided not to address.
Oh, Lupin told me about that. How do you feel about it?
I feel like it doesn't make any sense. We've been living peacefully for two centuries. Why are they plotting?
I don't know. We'll find out eventually. But, for now, we should get prepared.
Evelyn nodded and they both made their way to the parted. The parted is the place the werewolves are meant to go when wanting to shift back into a human after doing actives like archery or running through the woods. It's just used when you're not allowed to shift inside.
Evelyn shifted in her space. She walked over to the compartment filled with extra clothes and dressed in a red halter top with small rubies aligning the edges. After putting on her red shorts and sandals, she left the parted to see her uncle leaning on a tree.
When he slightly turned his head and looked at her, he smiled and began to make his way towards her. "Where shall we start?" Evelyn asked.
"First, since I'm sure Luna is busy wi-"
"Mother doesn't like to be addressed as Luna. Remember? She said that's how you address the lower alpha's wives. Since she's the queen of all werewolves, she demands we address her as such." Evelyn corrected.
"Right, it slipped my mind. Queen Levine is most likely to busy fretting small stuff, like the vampire. And I'm sure my brother is busy with building an army. So, we should focus on research." He spoke as they walked to one of the kingdom's back entrances.
"Research what?" Evelyn inquired.
"Well...you'll see."
