Chapter 1

Once upon a time there was a girl; she was comparatively intelligent, sweet, and very pretty, she was always quick to joke and yet quicker to smile.

Nevertheless she was no princess. She was just a girl: a sweet, silly, little girl.

One day the girl meets a boy: a stunning boy who repeatedly got into trouble. In spite of this, the girl and boy quickly became good friends. Each and every one the girl’s friends told her that boy was no good! They all claimed she should just forget the boy.

“I can’t,” says the girl. “I already I love him!”

“It won’t ever end well.” They warned her. “Only a princess will ever live ‘Happy Ever After’!”

The impractical girl overlooked her friend’s counsel and pursued the boy. And for a little while, they were content. She could make herself believe she in fact was a princess and he; her knight. “They were all wrong!” the girl would assume. “I may not be a genuine princess but I can still have my happily ever after!”

How mistaken she was.

One day, the boy left her. She had joked at the time to hide how much it wounded her to be without him. She always joked regarding the things that mattered most. And that beautiful devil of a boy she treasured so much moved away, and, with time, moved on. He didn’t wait for his sweet, silly, little girl who would always meet him with a smile and a joke. He moved on and left the girl behind.

She found herself alone; she had burnt too many bridges and gotten herself stuck in the past, with dreams of a now departed future. Incapable of moving on, she didn’t have any more jokes to tell or smiles to give.

She waited for him despite all that had happened, despite the fact that all her friends would think it pointless. So she never did tell them that she was at a standstill that she was waiting. Even she herself, at times, was never too sure what she had been waiting for. Weather she was waiting for him to return or someone else to take his place in her, or just for her to find it in herself to move on, she could not tell.

One day, years afterward, she and the boy meet once more, on a rainy day waiting to cross a street.

The moment they looked at each other they knew, they both remembered.

“Hey,” the boy grinned at her as if it had been nothing, as if she had moved on as effortlessly as he had.

“You lied,” there was no conviction in her voice, it was just a statement.

“About what?” this caught him off guard.

“You said you’d always love me! You said you’d come back but you never did!”

“I thought you’d move on. I did!”

The girl shook her head, slow and miserable as she felt her heart breaking within her chest. “I couldn’t. I waited.”

“All this time?” The boy's voice came out so silently it was barely more than a whisper, scarcely perceived over the drizzle and passing automobiles.

“What else could I do?” her reply was just at quiet.

“Why not just move on?”

Tears welled in her eyes as she beat them back. “Because, You Were My Knight, You Were Supposed to Fight for Me! For Us!” She cried taking off before the the light to cross even turned white.

“It was in that instant I realize, the unblemished imaginings of our happily ever after were just that; imaginings, cute daydreams, never something that would become ‘A Thing’. He was by no means a knight. I’ve never been a princess. And boys who are not knight don’t fight for girls who are not princesses.”

Obsidian: He's hilarious. Like, actually. I loved it. You're writing style is great, although you could do with a few less murmurs and mutters. I know it sounds critical, but I have the same problem and I hate it. Overall, it was one of the best stories I've read on here so far. I liked it better than those M...
