Chapter 1

Dear Diary,

Something amazing happened today! Someone entered the house and greeted me! He was huge and bright! And he had wings too! He said to me, “Good morning! You’re beautiful with God’s beauty, beautiful inside and out! God be with you.”

I was in shock! Who was this man? And what did he mean by those words?

Almost immediately, the man said, “Mary, you have nothing to fear. God has a surprise for you: You will become pregnant and give birth to a son and call his name Jesus. He will be great, be called ‘Son of the Highest’. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David; He will rule Jacob’s house forever - no end, ever to his kingdom.”

His words are so confusing. How can this be, especially when I have never slept with a man? And that was what I asked the man... or angel. I think he’s an angel!

So the angel answered,“The Holy Spirit will come upon you, the power of the Highest hover over you; therefore, the child you bring to birth will be called Holy, Son of God. And did you know that your cousin Elizabeth conceived a son, old as she is? Everyone called her barren, and here she is six months pregnant! Nothing, you see, is impossible with God.”

Elizabeth, my cousin? She’s pregnant? But... she’s so old! Yet, what I see cannot be denied. If this angel says that she is pregnant, she most certainly must be. And if his words about her is true, then what this angel is proclaiming about me must be true too! Nothing is impossible with God.

Just like what I said to the angel, I’ll write it here, so to remind myself of this wonderful and special encounter:

“Yes, I see it all now; I’m the Lord’s maid, ready to serve.

Let it be with me just as you (the angel) say.”

And then, the angel just left me. The room became dark, and normal again.

Love,

Mary
