chapter 1

I woke up to the sound of an obnoxious, loud buzzing echoing through my room. I reached over to my nightstand, picked up my phone, and turned off my alarm. I squinted my eyes at the brightness. Why iPhoneโs alarm gotta be so damn loud... I unlocked my phone and was scrolling through Instagram trying to force myself to wake up. Itโs my first day of sophomore year at Greenville High. Last year was not the best, but I made it through. I made a few friends and got to know them throughout the summer.
โSOLANA GET UP BEFORE YOUโRE LATEโ my older sister, Aya called to me. โI AMโ I yell. โ WHY ARE YOU PEOPLE YELLING THIS EARLY IN THE MORNING?โ my mom hollers from the hallway. She has a super loud and strong voice already, so whenever she yells, it makes me shiver. I hopped out of bed and grabbed my towel from the hanger behind the door. I trudged to the shower and took about 10 minutes.
When I got out, I wrapped my towel around my body and walked back to my room. I rubbed shea butter all over my body and quickly put on my clothes. I just put on a pair of ripped jeans that hugged my body and a yellow top that complimented my skin. I grabbed my white doc martens and a chain. Then I grabbed my backpack and my phone and ran downstairs.
I grabbed a muffin from the counter. I waved at Aya and she gave me an โmmhmโ in response with food in her mouth. I then grabbed my keys walking out the door, forgetting to say โbyeโ to my mom. I ran to my car and hopped inside while throwing my backpack on the passenger seat. I plugged my phone into the aux cord and played Soft Skin- Sarah Meow and Shiloh. Deja put me on to it and Iโve been obsessed ever since.
I started humming to the beat while backing out of the driveway. I pulled into the student parking lot of Greenville High. I hopped out of my car, adjusted my skirt, and grabbed my backpack. I locked my car and then walked toward the doors. โThree more yearsโ I whispered to myself.
I walk through the halls and see people glancing at me. I was thinking there was something on my face. Then I realized it was my curves. I had gained a lot of weight over the summer break. This summer I went through hell and eating was my coping method. I already ate a lot in general and usually never gained any weight. But whenever I was feeling emotional, I ate twice as much and I guess it finally got to me. I wasnโt complaining though. I wasnโt insecure about it so the stares werenโt bothering me.
I walked into the office and got my schedule. โWhatโs your name, sweetheart?โ the lady asked me. โSolรกna Williams,โ I told her. She then looked through some papers and handed me mine. โ Thanks!โ I told her while walking out. I looked down at my schedule and I smiled when I saw that I would be in the same class as last year. Thank god I donโt have to meet new people.
