Prologue
Jayden’s P.O.V
I should’ve known my sister would plan some weird shit when she didn’t let me talk to her husband.
I didn’t pay heed to my wolf Damien’s instincts and now I’m suffering.
“Unca Jay? Wakey and Weeber are eating the cappet.” I look down to see the prettiest Silver eyes. It takes a second to register what she said. But I turn to see her twin brother Lake and their gamma Noah’s son River were in fact chewing on the carpet.
Fuck.
“unca jay? I made a pee-pee.” I whip my head to see my sister’s beta Logan’s daughter sapphire look at me with sad blue eyes. And yes, she is standing in a puddle of what I would assume is her pee.
“Okay. Saph please don’t move. Lake and River, please stop eating the carpet.” I use my alpha voice. Did that work on four three-year-olds? No. I’m out of ideas.
I believe the look in my eyes is the same defeat I see in Phoenix’s when she’s supposed to take the twin out of the bathtub. I decide to take the coward’s way out and turn on the TV. While Lake, Lyric, and River are distracted, I quickly take Sapphire upstairs while praying they be okay for all the five minutes it’d take me to clean her up.
“you angy at me, Unca jay?” Sapphire looks at me with the big blue eyes that do justice to her name.
“No, pretty girl. I can never be mad and any of you. Just next time, tell me when you need to pee and we’ll go to the toilet, okay.”
“otay” I relent and put a diaper on her while I pray that the pack meeting end soon.
Phoenix and Hunter got in the habit of having a quarterly pack meeting. Meaning I have to go through this every three months. Phoenix asks Liam and Colt to send me here for a few days and they always fucking do. Sometimes, like right now, they miss Phoenix and come with me to visit.
I usually don’t complain about any of those while I’m away and I’m usually not alone with the circus for the whole night so I used to survive. Tonight however there’s some carnival that Liam has to go to before we leave tomorrow morning and he dragged Colt and even took Lyre with them, so… I’m way out of my league here.
I bring Sapphire to the rest of the kiddos and they chill for a while as I try to keep an eye on them while mopping. Four minutes to be exact. Until an angry cry ripple through the room.
I calm my shaky breath and think of ways to calm these children.
‘maybe tell them a scary story and send them to sleep?’ Damien suggests.
‘I don’t wanna do anything that’ll scar them for eternity.’
‘don’t be so dramatic.’ I could feel him rolling his eyes. Taking a deep breath in I ignore them to focus on what’s happening in front of me.
After some babble and some pretty good explaining for a three-year-old, lyric could be a lawyer, I learn that River chewed on Sapphire’s hair and now everyone is crying.
And this is exactly when Liam, Colt, and Lyre came in.
“Geepa, Geepapa, Mama Wyre!!” a chorus of happy kiddie voices yelled. Apparently, that’s how big their attention span is.
After explaining, Liam issued the orders. Liam and I will bathe Saph and Lyric, and while we’re at it Lyre and Colt will distract the boys.
It went as planned. Well…I basically remained to hand Liam shampoo and soap so, it went pretty well for me. I excelled at this job.
While Lake and River were in the bath, the girls wanted to paint their nails. I volunteered cause it seemed easy enough. But I should’ve known nothing would be easy with kids. Cause if you look past the fact their nails are tiny and undetectable, they move too much.
So, again Liam took over.
And I went out to sit on the porch and play some games on my phone. But as soon as I did, Atlas calls.
He is our beta Neil’s son and one of my best friends. We are supposed to take over the pack on my twentieth birthday along with our other friend Cyrus who will be my Gamma. Problem is, even though Colt, Neil, and Michel are leading the pack on paper, they make us do everything. I mean sure we can ask them for advice and they do interfere if we do something odd, but we are being trained how to lead the pack, by actually leading the pack.
“Hey, when are you coming home?” he immediately asks. I could hear the concern in his voice.
“we’ll be there by 11 in the morning tomorrow. Why?” I ask.
“We have a trespasser.” That’d explain it.
“did you make him talk?”
“Actually it’s a her. We don’t have much on her. She was unconscious when we found her. She’s a wolf but she definitely smells like vampires. She is in pretty brutal shape, and we doubt she even trespassed.” He explains to me.
“what do you mean?”
“she was found on the shore of the back River closest to the border by a guard. He informed us about a dead body, but she was still alive and we bought her to the hospital.”
“well, from what it looks like she should not be much threat. Still, I don’t wanna take chances. You cuff her to the hospital bed and leave someone to guard her door. If she wakes up before we get there, make her explain what happened. I don’t care if we have to beat the information out of her.” I really don’t want to hurt anyone, but the pack comes first.
“the thing is, we feel like she is our pack member.” He notifies hesitantly.
“what?”
“I don’t know just we all feel like we should protect her. Out wolves feel the same.”
“Okay then, don’t hurt her. We’ll go and then we will see tomorrow.”
“kay, then. See ya.”
I probably should go home soon.
