Chapter 1
The morning sun hit the sky, planting itself on the tip of the spire. The glowing seed grew and grew until it bloomed into a vivid flower of light. Three lean crystal towers stood at the bend of the city, watching over their gleeful people. Their smooth edges shone with a glint of mystery and the light blinked in and out of the clouds. A low hum poured in from the streets and throngs of happy people smiled and chatted among themselves. Laughs came from joyful children as they ran up and down, left and right through the curvy streets. Rose shaped crystal lampposts speckled the pavements, the light forming a candescent orb around the structure. But at night the glow flies came out to intensify the city with their luminous shine, dotting the velvet blanket covering the sky, awakening the rising moon from its sleep. Everything was perfect. The houses were perfect. The shops were perfect. The parks were perfect. The animals were perfect. The people were perfect. Well that was for all except one. Audrey Rae was thirteen. She was different, but not in a good way. Mystery and tension seemed to linger around her, bending the rules of the town’s happiness. She blended in with the crowd though nobody ever noticed the glint in her eyes or the way she had to force a smile upon her lips, like it hurt to stretch them out of her blank expression. Truth and lies confused her. Her mind whirled around in a tornado of questions that never got answered. She wondered if the city was just an illusion for everything was to good to be true. But it wasn’t. She could taste the sweetness of her shiny, red apple, she could smell the unprickled roses in her sleep and feel the solid ground beneath her. She wished it would give in to her weight, she wished he would give in to the truth and unravel the lies surrounding them all. What was so bad about the truth? Why was he scared to reveal it? Living with lies was worse than knowing the truth even if it was horrific and dirty. It was only Audrey that suspected such a thing, everyone else around her liked this world and suspected nothing other than the perfect lives they were given.
