Chapter 1
Alex ran to the car laughing, with a smile across his face. The men surrounding him were also laughing, laughing at what they have done and how they were going to get away with it. Embers fell from the sky, landing on the nearby trees. Behind them, a great big blaze of fire. The closest trees have already been caught on fire and were spreading to the rest of the forest. Alex and the other men jumped into their vehicles and took off, leaving clouds of dust in their wake. Alex looks into the rear-view mirror one more time to look at the burning house. Alex still smiles but there are tears in his eyes. He looks straight and drives on through the night.
