Chapter 1

“Here we are!” My mom said excitedly as she pulled into the driveway. “What do you think?”

“It looks nice.” I answered looking at our new house as we got out of the car. I wasn’t very happy about moving yet again. Me being the wonderful daughter that I am, I put on a fake smile and kept my mouth shut.

“Come, let me give you the tour before the movers get here.” She said pulling me up the steps of the porch. “You are going to love it here. I can just feel it.” She slid her key into the lock.

“I’m in love with the weather.” I shrugged. It was Texas, how could I not?

“Ta-da!” She swung open the door, holding her arms out. I walked inside to look around.

When you first walked in the entryway, a staircase was straight in front of the door. The huge living room was to the left. The kitchen, dining room, laundry room, and bathroom were all off of the living room. Upstairs was made up of a master bedroom, three smaller bedrooms, and a bathroom.

“This one is yours.” Mom said swinging open the door to the master bedroom, that was to the left of the stairs and by itself.

“Why?” I was shocked.

“Because you are the only one here most of the time.” She gave me a sad smile. “Besides, you will need it to host all of the new friends you will have.”

“You’re the best, mom.” I wrapped my arms around her in a hug.

“The movers are here!” Mom squealed as she broke our hug.

“Hey. I’m Kaylee.” I blonde cheerleader looking type girl introduced herself as I was watching the movers from the front porch. She flopped down in a chair before continuing. “I live across the street.”

“Hello. I’m Makenzie Dover.” I said with a wave.

“Will you be starting school on Monday?” Kaylee asked.

I nodded my reply.

“Which class?” She said ogling the sweaty shirtless guy moving the boxes from the moving truck.

“Senior.” I sighed.

“Me, too!” She perked up. “That guy is hot!” She said pointing to the guy she had been eye fucking.

“He is the reason I’m not unpacking right now.” I giggled.

“Maybe we can get him to help us move boxes around in your room.” She wiggled her eyebrows causing me to giggle.

“I’d let him move THE box alright.” I joked causing her to laugh.

“We are going to be great friends. I can already tell.” She said wiping tears from her eyes caused by laughing so hard.

“Why can’t guys in high school look half this good?” I asked.

“For real though. They are such little boys.” She shook her head.

We sat in silence watching the movers until a car pulled into the driveway across the street.

“Shit!” Kaylee cursed as a very muscular guy not much older than us got out of the car. He leaned against the car, crossing his arms at his chest. The sleaves of his t-shirt looked as if they were going to split wide open. “I have to go.”

“Is everything okay?” I asked.

“I’m grounded and not supposed to leave the house. That’s my brother.” She pointed at him. “I’ll see you at school Monday.” She said before jogging across the street. She walked up the steps to her house with him right behind her.

After unpacking the last box in my room, I head downstairs. I can hear mom on a call with someone. I decide to start unpacking the kitchen. I figure she will be called away to work any moment now since she has had the last two weeks off. I know I will be left to get the house in order like always. I don’t really mind it; I know she works hard to provide the life that we have. The thing is our cleaning styles are very different. Mine is that of a mother with a teenage daughter and hers is that of a teenage daughter. She is very messy, and it drives me insane.

After putting away the third box of kichen items, mom enters the kitchen.

“I know I’m not supposed to go back to work for three more days, but... “, she pauses, “they really need me.”

“It’s fine. Go.” I smile trying to hide the disappointment in my voice. I should be used to her missing everything, but it still stings sometimes.

“Are you sure? I don’t have to go.” She said looking skeptical.

“They need your help. I’ll be fine. It’s not like this is the first time I’ve started a new school.” I joke. We have moved around a lot in my lifetime. Every time my mom breaks up with a guy, we move. It’s just what we do.

“Well, I guess I’ll go pack my bag. Are you sure that, you are sure?” She smiles.

“A thousand times sure.” I smile back at her.

I’m currently sitting on the front porch waiting on the pizza delivery guy. I stretch out my legs down the steps as I lay my back against the railing. A car pulls up outside my neighbor, Kaylee’s house. Kaylee and her brother step out on the front steps of their house. A guy jumps out of the passenger seat of the car and runs to Kaylee. He picks her up causing her to squeal as he spins them around. She wraps her arms around his neck and kisses him passionately. My guess would be that this is her boyfriend.

I take a swig of beer as I watch my new neighbor. The hair on the back of my neck stands up as a guy gets out of the car. He’s wearing a black jacket zipped up with the hood pulled over his head. I can’t see his face clearly, but I can tell by the way he slightly turns his head toward me that he has noticed me. He freezes mid step before recovering and continues toward the house. He is in the process of giving one of those weird handshakes to Kaylee’s brother when a female gets out of the backseat of the car. She has long, straight as a board black hair that is swept up into a high ponytail. She is wearing a short black coat with shiny metal buckles. Her heavily eye lined eyes search her surroundings. Her dangerous looking eyes find mine then giving me a nod before she joins her friends.

The whole groups attention lands on the car coming down the street. The light on the top of the car signals what is delivering. They all watch as the car pulls up in my driveway. I stand up, pulling down my short shorts as much as possible. The night air a little cool, but it feels nice compared to the temps I’m used to. My bare feet carry me over to the pizza guy. His attention drawn directly to my chest, never making eye contact before he speaks.

“It’s a little nipple-lee out tonight.” He smirks as he finally looks up at my face.

“It’s not bad.” I say rolling my eyes. I found no humor in his joke about my hard nipples that was the product of the goosebumps the guy across the street caused.

“Do you need help carrying this inside?” He smirked.

“I think I can manage.” I said taking the pizza box from him before turning and heading for the porch.

“Damn. Perfect tits, beautiful face, and a tight ass.” He said to himself as he watched me walk away. I bent down and picked up my beer before going into the house. I paused before shutting the door. I see as the guy across the street jogged over to the creepy pizza delivery guy. He proceeded to poke the guy in the chest as the pizza guy held his hands up in surrender. The guy in the black hoodie stood there watching the delivery guy drive away before jogging back across the street.

I closed the door as I wondered what that was all about. There is no way he could have heard the unprofessional things that were said to me. Was there? What was with the goosebumps? I wasn’t even close enough to see his face. That was so weird.

I sat at the island and ate my pizza unable to stop thinking about the neighbors and their friends. I got a weird feeling from the guy wearing the hoodie. I couldn’t decipher what exactly the feeling was, but I knew it wasn’t caused by fear.

I flip on my blinker to turn into my new school. This school actually looks inviting, but I’m not getting my hopes up. I know I won’t be here very long, but I’m hoping to at least be able to finish out the school year. I really want this to be my last first day.

I pull into the back of the lot and park my car. I notice all of the students heading inside the building. I’m sitting in my car waiting for the final bell because I am basically not in the mood to walk through the crowded hallway getting “the new girl” looks. After several minutes, I decided I better get this over with.

I grabbed my bag and binders out of the passenger seat before getting out. That’s when my day went to shit. I threw my bag over my shoulder, while flipping my hair and trying to shut my door with my hip as my phone started to slip off of the stack of folders I had in my other hand. As my door shut, I realized my keys were sitting on the console in my locked car. I was about to just say screw it and go on to class and worry about getting into my locked car after school when I realized the universe hated me. I couldn’t go to class because I had shut a thick strand of my hair up in the door of my car... the door that was locked...with no way to unlock it because my keys were inside of it on the console.

“You have got to be fucking kidding me!” I yelled trapped.

My phone! It’s got to be here close. I’ll get it and call a locksmith. I looked and spotted my phone. It had slid further than I would have thought. The screen wasn’t cracked, so that had to be a good sign, right? I stretched my leg as far as I could and tried to retrieve it with my foot. I moved my body as far away from my car as my hair would allow and stretched my foot out again. Still no such luck. Why? Because the universe hates me.

This sent me into full on panic mode. I pounded on my window with both open hands while cussing my car. I proceeded to stretch my foot to kick the tire to release some of my embarrassment and anger. The final kick was too far. I felt a sharp pain in my foot. I was pretty sure I broke something. After calming down and catching my breath I decided that yelling for help was the only thing left to do. I began searching the parking lot for any other sign of life. That’s when I spotted him. He had the sexiest face I’ve ever seen. I immediately knew he had to be the boy in the school that all the girls wanted, and all the boys wanted to be.

“A little help here?” I said after breaking the momentary lapse in judgement I was having.

“What would be the fun in that? I was really enjoying the show.” He said with his arms crossed, leaning back on his car.

“I’m so happy that my misfortune is entertaining for you.” I shot back getting extremely aggravated. “Could you stop being a dick and at least slide me my phone so I can call a locksmith?”

“Maybe. If you ask nicely.” He said smirking. His perfect teeth shining like a stupid fucking toothpaste commercial.

“Please?” I said through gritted teeth with the biggest fake smile I could muster.

Just then he turned to walk away. “Hey! Where are you going?” I said to his back. He continued to walk away until I could no longer see him. “You have got to be fucking kidding me right now!” I said struggling to reach my phone again.

“Would you stop struggling and move over?” He huffed bringing a long aluminum tool up to my window. After doing whatever it was that he was doing, I heard a pop. He then reached over and opened the door.

“Thank you!” I said running my fingers through my long light brown hair. “Yeah, don’t get used to it.” He said leaning against the fender of my car.

“Don’t worry, I won’t.” I said bending down to pick up my things.

“Nice ass.” He said from behind me.

“You might as well give it up, Casanova. I won’t be falling at your feet like you’re used to.” I said rolling my eyes.

“Oh yeah? That’s good because you’re not my type anyway, sweetheart.” He replied as he locked my door throwing my keys inside before shutting the door.

“You have a type besides easy?” I smarted off. “Why did you just do that?” The reality of what he just did hitting me.

“Any type but needy.” He said walking away toward his car without another word.

“I am not needy!” I yelled after him as he disappeared around a car as he made his way to his car. My hair might have been free, but I still had to find someone to unlock my car by the end of the day. The longer I thought about it the more my anger grew. This was a first day for the books.
