I’m Claire Thomson. I live in Pennsylvania with my mom and normally my dad, but he’s in the hospital at the moment. He has to get a bunch of tests and stuff before he has his big surgery to get a tumor removed in a few weeks.

Anyway, ever since he was diagnosed my mom has been struggling with it because she doesn’t know what will happen to him when he gets the surgery. I don’t blame her, honestly. I’m upset to, but she’s not being very grown up about her feelings. She has become more demanding and mad. I’m always seeing her with a glass of wine or a can of beer.

It never use to be this way. She used to be so happy and pretty much smiling every second. We used to go bowling every Saturday night as a family just the three of us. I never had a sibling because my mom can’t have any more kids. She told me it had to do with something called infertility, or something like that. Some Saturdays we would even bring my best friend Charity with us.

Charity has helped me through a lot. We have been friends since pre-school. Kindergarten is when she told me she didn’t have a mom and dad, and that she was adopted by a couple when she was really little. I like her adopted parents a lot they were very kind and supportive of my family. She’s also an only child. she lives only a few houses down from me.

We start high school soon, and I’m hoping we get at least a class together. Maybe even lunch. Right now, we're just enjoying our summer vacation at home. We sometimes see dad on Wednesdays if my mom is up for it. We might even see him tomorrow.

I overheard my mom talking to the doctor on the phone yesterday saying they had some news they had for us. Let’s just hope it’s all good and nothing bad.
