Run

The crisp night air howled and quivered as I ran. The footsteps, light and sloshing in the caves continued their journey toward me, silent yet deafening against the pounding in my eardrums. They stopped. The world stopped as I turned to face my grotesque yet beautiful stalker. They just had to find my doll…that was all it took for her to become my captor.

“Where are you going?! I just want to have a friendly c h a t…” That wasn’t comforting at ALL. I quickened my pace, desperate to get her away from me as soon as possible…just get to the carpenter, just get to the carpenter…he’ll fix her…

A thorn-ensnared vine, thick and a murky khaki colour, grabbed my ankle and I fell to the ground, twisting against its deathly grip. She pulled me closer. More movement. Closer. Move. Closer. “Move. Closer” I finally reached her rotten feet, shoes grubby and maimed, and dress grimy and stained. Her face was disrepair, maroon tears painting their makeup onto her pale, ghostly cheeks. However, none of this amounted to the sheer horror the glassy eyes bestowed upon my frozen, aching heart. Rimmed with coal from her burning fire within, they stared a blank and merciless stare that made my blood icy in my veins. Cracks lined the pupils, and the surrounding colour was long since robbed from her life, now replaced by a numb, dull grey. The eye itself wore a gown of dust upon it, constantly smarting tears of crimson pain. I wiped the tears tenderly, then snapped my hand back when I realised with plenty weeping that she was no longer there. My beautiful daughter, taken by the poltergeist in the doll she now saw through. She hears her father’s cries of grief through the chipped, porcelain ears bestowed upon her. The hair that used to be lovely, well-cared for, now hung in snaking vines not unlike the one strangling my ankle, writhing and snaking around the cheeks stained red. I gasped as the vines came for me once more.
