A hand grabbed my shirt and pushed me hard against the locker behind me. What in Hell was happening? I only saw black with stars dancing around, but the picture slowly became clear.
“Will you talk now, faggot, or do you need another punch in the nose? I asked you what you were looking at?” Spit flew over my face as the deep voice echoed inside my head.
“Oh, wouldn’t you like to know?” I taunted him. “Don’t worry Princeton, I have no reason to even want you.” Closing in on him, I tilted my head towards his ear, whispering, “I’m guessing you wouldn’t want me showing your friends here the pictures you were sending me 2 months ago, right?”
A smirk grew on my face as I stared him down. His face turned pale and he released me instantly.
“Whatever! Just get the fuck away from me, you freak,” he blurted, signaling for his friends to follow him as he parted down the hallway.
What a bunch of sheep. Grabbing my backpack from the floor, I rushed to the cafeteria as lunch was almost over.
I picked a tray and jumped in the queue to see the sad choices of the day. As expected, onion soup with a side dish of soggy vegetables. Screw this school, honestly.
After paying for my meal, I strolled towards the same table I’d sat at for the past four years—it was like muscle memory at this point.
I knew exactly who I’d find sitting alone, waiting for me.
“You don’t have to wait here alone, you know,” I announced to the tall brunette, his brown eyes instantly looking up at me. A slow smile rose from one side of his face.
“You can go sit with your straight football friends over there,” I continued, putting my tray down and taking out my book.
“For the 40 millionth time, Linus, I want to sit with you,” he said in a frustrated tone, making my eyes roll as I let out a slight snort. “Besides, who cares what they think? I’ll make them do extra workouts during practice if they say anything,” he went on with a sturdy look.
As team captain, it’ll most likely be true.
Jacob had sat with me for the past two years since he’d moved into the house beside mine. My mother had almost immediately befriended his mom and, since then, he’d sat with me every lunch hour.
As if only just noticing, Jacob narrowed his eyes, squinting at the side of my face that was thrusting in pain. A clunking sound resonated below us as his fork dropped from his hand.
“Who the hell did that to you?” he growled, “I told you to tell me if any asshole hurts y—”
“It’s fine, don’t worry,” I interrupted, “I can take care of myself. Besides, I hold some power over the dick that did this.”
He laid a hand over my face and held it there, giving me a small smile before going back to eating his food. His touch was healing, yet I had to pretend like it wasn’t. Don’t get me wrong, I feel no attraction towards him... anymore.
Jacob has gone out with a few girls since arriving in town, and I have yet to tell him that I’m gay. I am almost sure he won’t care, but the possibility he’d hate me for it isn’t zero, and the fear of losing him is beyond me.
It’s humorous to me how even though everyone at school knows, he just passes it as if they’re being assholes whenever I get called slurs.
Little does he know.
“So, there’ll be a party down at Allison’s this Saturday at 9,” he said out of the blue, my gaze slowly shifting from my book to his eyes. “I was wondering if you’d like to come with me. I know you don’t like parties, but I think it’ll be fun. What do you say?” He pouted his lips, tilting his head ever so slightly.
He still believed I was naive to that face—the same he made every time he wanted something.
“Hmm, I’m not sure. You know that crowds aren’t my thing... But alright, I’ll come,” I muttered, his smile widening from one end to the other.
He’s just so adorable sometimes, it’s dangerous.
The bell rang not long after that and we headed together to our History class. My dislike for that class was gigantic, and the only good thing about it was having Jacob there.
The professor’s words mumbled in the background as I wandered off, thinking of what was going to happen at the party during the weekend. I didn’t want anyone telling Jacob the truth before I did, but I couldn’t do it myself either. What if they make us play spin the bottle? What if the bottle chooses Jacob and me? What if it makes us kis—
“Class dismissed, don’t forget the project due for finals week,” Mr. Shang spoke in his tepid monotonous voice, dragging me out of my overthinking head.
Jacob usually drove me home when school ended, obviously, as I couldn’t even afford a car. After my last class was done, we met at the school entrance and walked together to the parking lot, hopping in the parked black mustang. The car always smelled like a girl had just been there and, to be honest, it made me a tad bit jealous. I don’t know why, but I still held a minor grudge that he was straight.
The car was filled with silence, the good kind, though. We listened to our favorite songs as he drove, but the moment was ruined when he pulled into his driveway.
We both jumped off, and he looked over at me with a smile, reciting his typical “I’ll see you tomorrow!” as he shut the door behind him.
“Honey, is that you?” My mom cried out from the kitchen when I shut the door behind me. “What would you like to eat? I made some mashed potatoes with chicken. Want some?”
Chicken sounded good, but she couldn’t see my bruise, or she’d go psycho on me.
“No, thanks, I’ll eat later! Love you!” I chimed back, steering up to my room before she came for a hug.
Slamming the door behind me, I flung my bag on the floor, letting gravity drop my body onto the bed. This I could do every day if only I had someone to share the bed with.
~~~
I opened my eyes gradually to look out the window, noticing it was already morning. The only good thing about it was that it was Friday—the last day of the week.
The day was pretty average. I managed to avoid that Princeton idiot all day, and the highlight was a conversation Jacob and I had about whether a hot dog was a sandwich or not. That day, Jacob drove me back home again, ABBA playing on the radio, which almost caused an accident due to his dancing urge.
I went into my house and straight to the kitchen to see what chef specialty my mom had cooked.
My bruise was a bit more hidden, so I could finally enjoy eating without hiding. After that, I headed up to my room and sat by my window, staring out for a couple of seconds until I was interrupted by a moving figure in the back.
Jacob. I could see him through the window of his room, which faced mine, a coincidence indeed.
I wouldn’t call it spying. I was just trying to relax, and he happened to be there, taking his shirt off and then laying on his bed. I watched as he drifted off to sleep.
Oh, to be on that bed.
“Wait, no, no, no,” I mumbled out loud. He was just a friend.
I closed my curtains to avoid even thinking about it any further.
A vibrating warmth came from my feet, and I looked down, seeing Lena purring for my attention. I lay in bed and called Lena up to cuddle with me to sleep.
No more weird thoughts, I told myself before drifting off to sleep.
~~~
Saturday evening rolled around, and I was as unprepared as always.
Why am I so nervous? It’s just a dumb party. If anything, I would just hide in a corner and pretend to be busy on my phone while I checked the weather app thirty times in a row.
There was a knock at the door, followed by my mom yelling.
“Linus! Jacob is here asking for you!”
I hurried to my closet and snatched a black hoodie with the phrase ‘whatever’ on it and some black jeans. My closet was begging for a make-over, but I hadn’t had a chance to do it.
I had my pants on but was still struggling to get into my hoodie when my door opened.
“Uhm, sorry,” I heard a familiar voice nervously say, knowing he just saw me half naked.
“It’s alright, I’m done, let’s go!” I told Jacob as I got the hoodie on, quickly glancing at him.
Was it me or was he blushing? No, no way, that was my imagination.
We got to the party and, as expected, there were a shit ton of people there. It was every introvert’s nightmare. Jacob and I walked inside, hearing almost everyone cheer for him as we entered. Great, more attention.
I did my usual routine of going to the loneliest corner and chilling there. Not much after 10 minutes later, I glimpsed tipsy Jacob heading toward me. Damn, he’s a light drinker for a jock.
“Hey, we are about to play Truth or Dare, come on and join, I want to play with you.” Jacob grabbed me by the arm and dragged me to the living room without waiting for a reply.
About 20 people were gathered in a circle waiting for us. Someone kill me. We sat down as Allison was giving out the basic rules in her high-pitched voice.
“Okay, guys! So, we spin the bottle and whoever it lands on, they have to grab a random card from the center that will either have a truth or a dare. And that’s it, you will have to do it!”
After about ten draws, people had been chosen to either kiss someone or do other random acts, only a few of them having truth cards. I was starting to think there were mostly dares in there
Thankfully, neither Jacob nor I had been chosen so fa—
“OMG, Yess, Jacob! Take a card!” I heard someone cheer.
Jacob slowly drew a card. As he read it, he instantly flushed red, and he slowly drove his eyes toward me.
Couldn’t be that bad, right?
“Come on, read it out loud!” Allison yelled.
“Uhh, uhm, okay. So, it says: Take the person to your right to a secluded room and you can’t come out until you kiss.”
Damn.
Everyone’s eyes immediately snapped to the person to his right: me, sitting there with my eyes as wide as plates, staring into nothing, my mouth probably hanging open.

It’s about to get interesting..🫣
