Chapter 1

Yelena my mother calls your breakfast is ready. I grabbed my white cane that was beside my bed. I got dressed and I went to the bathroom and washed and brushed my teeth. I slowly and carefully walked down the stairs. My mom said she made waffles one of my favorites. You have an appointment today, my dad said. Appointment? I said yes, my mom said it’s the big appointment and my heart sank. As the hours passed I stayed in my room waiting nervously. My mom knocked on my door, it’s time sweetie, she said. I went outside and sat in the car and listened to music as we got to the doctors office. When my dad was parking the car I took off my headphones. My mom helped me out of the car and all three of us walked to the doctor’s office. We waited in the waiting room until I heard my name Yelena Rogers, the doctor said. My mom held my hand as we followed him. We sat down in the room and the doctor said I’m sorry but your blindness can’t be cured. My heart sank and I felt like sobbing. I can hear my mom crying which shattered my heart. My dad was signing some forms and I waited in the car with my mom and she said it’s okay to show your feelings sweetie I just stayed quiet and looked out the window. My dad came in the car, he didn’t say anything, he just drove. The whole car ride was silenced. When we got home I went straight to my room. It’s been about a week and I barely talked to anyone. My parents’ anniversary is today and they went on a date. My parents left and said they will be back in two hours....
