Chapter one

April 1994

She gave her head a gently quick shake as she looked at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. Her eyes glistened with joy as she couldn’t remove the smile from her lips, at seventeen Hannah was finally going to attend her very first concert and she couldn’t wait.

She didn’t care that her father was still chucking his overprotective fit about it, at least he some-what trusted who she was going with.

Hannah took an excited breath to shake her nerves away.

“Hannah! Emmy’s here!” She could her dad shout down the hall.

Hannah let herself joyfully escape from the bathroom, leaving behind the small mess of makeup her father allowed her to own.

Bill folded his arms across his chest as he stared at what his daughter was wearing, he didn’t like it. He didn’t like that she was wearing a fitted t-shirt or a short skirt, he didn’t like that she didn’t look like his wholesome sweet innocent daughter.

Hannah kissed her dad’s cheek.

“Hannah.”

“It’s fine, Daddy.”

Bill raised an eyebrow as he watched Hannah move into the lounge to grab her small bag “It’s not fine, sweetheart. Have you seen what your wearing.”

“Yeah. We have a mirror.” She cheekily responded.

Bill sighed “I want you to change.”

“But, daddy.” Hannah barely let her words skip a beat as she turned to face him.

“Hannah, your my daughter. I don’t want you wearing that.”

“Emmy is.” Hannah could see a blue car parked out the front of their house.

“And Emmy jumped off the bridge.” Bill realised what he said “of course.” He sighed, he thought Emmy was a bad influence on his daughter. At least he trusted Emmy’s mother; Susan, who tried to keep her own daughter on the straight and narrow.

Hannah rushed towards the front door.

“Hannah.”

Hannah twisted her attention to her father.

Bill pulled his daughter into his arms before kissing the top of her head “I love you.”

Hannah wrapped her arms around her dad’s waist before resting her head carefully on his chest “I love you too, daddy.”

Even though she was only seventeen, Hannah didn’t overly hate her father’s overprotectiveness. He was trying the best he could, it was just the two of them and Bill would move heaven, hell and earth in order to protect his only child. Even after Hannah’s mother suddenly passed away, Bill had struggled to take up both the mother and father role, he had kept himself together for the sake of his daughter.

Bill slowly reached for the door handle before opening the front door.

Hannah slowly pulled her grasp away from Bill, she didn’t let another word escape from their lips as she rushed towards Emmy’s car.

Bill held back his reaction to the young eighteen year old sitting in the backseat, he noticed the way her red hair was curled, the way her makeup made her look older than she really was.

He stepped down and closer towards the car, he watched as Hannah excitedly climbed into the backseat.

“Hey Bill.”

Bill shifted his attention to Susan, she looked too relaxed to be going to a concert with her daughter and her friend “Afternoon Susan.” He rested himself against the passenger window “What time should I stop watching the clock?”

Susan let a small laugh slip through her lips “When I bring Hannah back in the morning.”

“Midnight, then?” Bill joked.

Susan laughed again.

Emmy cringed in embarrassment as the two adults joked amongst each other “Can we go now!?”

Hannah stayed silent as she watched her father interact with Susan. She was used to seeing her father be playful with Susan.

“In a sec.” Susan kept her calm composure before turning her attention back to Bill “The girls will be safe; any dramas and I’ll ring you.”

“I trust you.” Bill let his honest words escape from his lips.

Hannah had heard that sentence countless times even though it was usually directed to her rather than to Susan.

“Have fun, sweetie.” Bill turned his attention to his daughter.

Emmy held back her smartass reaction.

“Bye dad.”

“Bye sweetheart.” Bill gently pushed himself off the car.

“Bye Bill.” Susan smiled at him.

“Yeah, Bye Mr Winchester. Thanks for letting Hannah come with me.”

Bill could detect a smartass tone in Emmy’s words.

Bill stepped back onto the footpath as he watched the car drive out of his eyeline, he allowed worry to set in.
