Prologue - Lewis Pt1
Being forced to live with two idiots is really getting on my nerves, how does my father not see how terrible they are, not just my two stepbrothers but my stepmother too. Why did my mother have to leave me with a drunk of a father? I’m surprised he even managed to find another woman, let alone marry her, she knows of his drinking problems and still stays with him. Edwin and Eve are the two most dumb people I have ever met, neither of them can stick with a job for very long, they have both worked in nearly every shop, restaurant, entertainment centre that there is on the Island.
Killing them was never the plan, but not long after I got my own place and a decent paying job as an assistant to one of the town counsellors, they both thought they were free to crash at my apartment whenever they please. Leaving the place in a mess whenever I got back, I never even gave anyone a key, so I have no idea how they keep getting in. I know for a fact that my roommate Wayne wouldn’t let them in, he hates them just as much as I do, he leaves every time they are there as for some reason, they think it’s okay to mess with him too. He hates it, he left home to get away from people like that and now we moved in together he’s still near awful people.
Frustrated with them one evening after they called during the day saying they were out of cola and kept insisting me to grab some for them on my way home. Luckily Wayne had messaged saying he escaped through his window when he first heard them, and they can no longer contact him after the countless times he’s had to change his phone number. Deciding to take a trip to the hardware store instead, grabbing some white plastic sheets and some random cans of paints, that I may have to use if their blood spills onto the walls. It was such an impulse, but it needed to be done, maybe if I couldn’t go through with it, it would give them a good scare, no one would believe them anyways, quiet Lewis who was pushed around his entire life, attempting to kill his stepbrothers? Absurd.
Loading everything in the back of my metallic green Camaro, I plan out what needs to be done, if I go through with this, I must hide the evidence, it can’t go back to me. Maybe if I hit one of them hard enough in the head, hide them before drowning the second, that way I can take them to the docks, tie one of their foots to the docks and act as if they hit their head and fell in. The other one would have jumped in after him to help but as they can’t swim, he drowned trying to save his brother.
Perfect.
Believe it or not but I have been dreaming about this scenario many times in many different ways, I have been planning this since the visits to my apartment started to become a frequent occurrence.
Back at my apartment, I drag in the box of the supplies, taking them into the bathroom, luckily, they are too focused on the tv laughing at whatever adult animation they started binging recently. Putting the box down in the hallway outside the bathroom, I take out the sheets and start lining them up and down the hall and leading into the bathroom too. Then I start to fill the bath up with water, cold water not warm or hot, to match the water at the docks. Before starting with the plan, I tie my hair back into a bun, to have less of a chance of getting any blood on it, or it gets in the way, I’m just going to have to burn my suit now anyways there will be too much evidence on it once this is done.
“Edwin!” I shout, “Come and help me with this will you?”
“Seriously? Still can’t do anything for yourself. Do you always need people to help you with simple tasks, no wonder dad hated you the most.” Edwin exclaimed, luckily, he still got up and was making his way to the bathroom.
Before he turned the corner I hid climbed into the bath and gently pulled the curtain closed, giving him the element of surprise.
“Lewis, I’m here? You’re not naked in there are you?” Edwin asked.
“Of course not,” I spoke menacingly as I threw open the curtain, hammer in hand and bashed him as hard as I could in the head. “And he’s not my father, not anymore.”
That should do it, his eyes fell to the back of his head as he fell to the floor, the front of his head hitting the edge of the bath on the way down, causing double the injury.
“Well, that worked out nicely.” I spoke to myself, looking down at Edwin laying there, lifeless.
“Oy, what was that noise? What are you both doing in there?” Asked Eve, pausing the show he was watching.
“Nothing, don’t worry, the shower floor was wet, and I slipped is all.” I hastily replied back.
“Oh okay” He replies, unpausing the show and laughing at something that happened.
Picking up Edwin’s body I wrap him in a spare white sheet, his blood already seeping through and drag his body to sit behind the open bathroom door for now. Placing down another sheet in its place, so that water doesn’t go all the floors for the next part of my plan.
“Actually Eve, can you give us a hand? Edwin is struggling to get this fixed.” I shout, before talking a little quieter as if I were talking to Edwin himself, “Well maybe if you paid attention in school, it would be easy.”
“What is he struggling with now, you two would be useless without me I swear, always need a handyman around.” Eve says as he makes his way into the bathroom, “What’s the issue?”
“There is a clog or something in the bath, I can’t seem to get my hand in there to get it.”
“Alright.” Eve says as he bends over and looks in the bath, “Well the cover is in, did you think of that?”
“No, I don’t think I did” I say as I put a leg either side of Eve and forcefully dunk his head into the bath shoving his head under the water. Using all my force to keep him under as he begins to thrash and scratch at my arms to let him go and I don’t, not for a few minutes after he stops just in case he’s faking.
It’s done, they are both dead, I did it, I can’t believe I actually did it, I take a step back and look at the mess of the bathroom, my wet hands reaching to the top of my head. Taking deep breaths in shock, and amazement, the thrill of that was amazing, but the job isn’t done yet. Now I need to get their bodies into the car, I start with Eve, lifting him up and placing one of his arms over my shoulder, dragging him to the front door. Maybe I can get away with him being drunk and passed out.
Luckily, I’m only on the second floor so there isn’t too far to go, just have to hope I don’t pass anyone on the way. Opening the door with him around me was a struggle, hoping that I wouldn’t drop him, but now I just have to make my way down the stairs, even though the lift would be easier, more people would spot me there. Luckily, the stairs always have a funky smell to them so no one wants to take them and just ques for the lift, so I should be alone here, and no one would here Eve’s feet drag down each step.
Nearing the lobby, I hope that it’s too late in the evening for there to be many people rushing in and out or even hanging out near the entrance. Looking through the glass window I don’t spot anyone, so I take that as my chance to make my exit, leaning Eve against the wall beside the door as I pull it open. Then throwing his arm back over my shoulder as I rush as quick as I can to the lobby and to the doors on the other side, its good I didn’t park to far away in the residential car park.
Reaching my car, I decide that for now it’d be best to lay Eve down in the back of the car, and hope that when I go back for Edwin no one spots him. Leaning him up against the car, I reach into my pockets for the keys which thankfully I didn’t have time to take out when I got back and opened up the back door before sliding Eve into the car as far back as I could, but he’s too heavy to go all the way. So, I have to leave him there and walk round to the other side of the car and grab him by his arms and pull him the rest of the way, making sure to let his left arm drop down before shutting the doors and locking the car. This way it looks less staged than if his arms were to be crossed over himself if anyone was to pass by.
One last body removal, this one may be harder to hide, but I need to think fast, I can’t put him into a bag, or it’d be too obvious and heavy, I can’t keep him in the white sheet either as that’s equally obvious, unless I go for passed out drunk again but had a little bump on the way. Either way I can’t be seen by anyone at all, I’ll just have to risk the passed out drunk option. Hopefully there isn’t an overly obvious amount of blood on Edwin that raises any questions.
Making my way back into the lobby I see that there are a few people in here now, some getting mail or just coming back from work or an evening out.
“Hey Lewis,” a woman’s voice calls, I turn and see it’s Henley “You’re a bit later than usual, are you only getting in?”
“No, been home awhile, just taking my stepbrothers home, they found my alcohol cupboard again and drank it dry” I reply, using this as an alibi.
“Oh no, didn’t you just move it? They spend too much time in your apartment.” Henley says back, she knows of my relationship with them, only living a couple of doors down from me.
“I did but if I don’t keep buying more they will complain and threaten to tell my so-called father where I live.” I reply, “Even Wayne has to hide out until they leave, he won’t come home until the next morning just to be sure.” I trust Henley, I may even like Henley, maybe once the bodies are dealt with, I can have more time getting to know her instead of waiting on my stepbrothers every second.
“I’m sorry you guys have to go through this, if there is anything I can do to help, I’m only down the hall.” Henley says gently putting her hand on my arm smiling.
“Thank you, really” I reply smiling back at her, “Well I better go get the other one before Eve wakes up in the back of my car screaming and making a scene.”
Henley laughs and so do I, she’s probably imagining the scenario, whilst I’m laughing knowing he will never wake up again. He will never make a scene and threaten to bring the sperm donor back into my life. Henley then removes her hand from my arm and makes her way to the mail slots, whilst I return to the stairs, I may have to wait until everyone leaves the lobby, I don’t know how much blood is still on Edwin that may catch attention.
Making my way back up the two floors of stairs, I walk up to my apartment door and open it, luckily it did shut behind me but didn’t lock. Good thing Edwin didn’t suddenly jump alive and run away or anything, he is still where I left him, I don’t really want to have to hit him round the head again or start a chase, I do have to unwrap him from the sheets though as that would cause even more attention my way. Throwing the blood covered sheets into the bathtub, Edwin is left with dried blood smeared down his face, I’ll have to take a cloth and ice pack with me to the car and keep putting it on his face now and then if I do spot anyone on the way. Deciding to grab those before I attempt to lift Edwin up, or I’d have to dump him over the back of the sofa, I dab the cloth in a little of the still wet blood, to make it look like I’ve tried to clean up his wound, before having it hang on my shoulder.
Edwin is a bit trickier to pick up with him being sat down behind the door, closing the door nearly all the way and pulling Edwin up as if I would be picking him up lifting him also over my shoulder, when he is close to standing, I twirl him round so that he can have his arm over my shoulder, and it looks like we are now both walking. I have the ice pack in my hand that is holding Edwin from the front, not having anywhere else to put it, as he isn’t able to hold it to his head anymore. Then hook my foot onto the slightly open bathroom door and pull it open and drag Edwin through and start the journey down to the car.
This time it is a lot trickier, as soon as I get to the doorway of the stairs someone leaves their apartment, we make eye contact and I give them a toothy smile and try my best to wave.
“Are those boys passed out drunk again?” the lady asks, as she’s standing in her doorway with her robe around her, a lot of my neighbours seem to have put up with the antics of my stepbrothers, thankfully today would be the last.
“Yeah, taking them down to the car now, don’t want them to wake up in my apartment tomorrow and bother Wayne and I, let alone everyone else here so early.” I reply to her, she gives me a sympathetic look, knowing too well the many mornings that the entire floor has been woken up by my brothers shouting at each other and turning the TV up too loud at 7am.
“You have that new job at the counsel, right?” she asks, I internally groan, Edwin is getting too heavy for this conversation to continue on for much longer. “I’m sure if you butter them up, you can get a restraining order on the boys, especially one on that wretched father of yours, you know he was never a nice man in high school either. Don’t know what your mother ever saw in him.”
“I don’t know either.” I mumble looking down, even if my mum left me, I don’t want anyone to speak badly about her.
“What was that Lewis?” the lady asked me, as she pulls on her robe and wraps it around herself.
“Nothing, I should get going before they decide to wake up on the way back and ask for even more alcohol.” I tell her, she gives me one last smile and returns to her apartment. Giving the stairwell door a kick open, I continue my way down with Edwin and hope for no more distractions.
