PROLOGUE

“Mike just text me,” Lacey said, coming around the counter and slipping her phone in her back pocket. She leaned on the counter, continuing to talk as I finished up with my customer. “He said Matt was asking if we were coming over after work.”

“No, he didn’t,” I said, smiling, then handed the customer his bag, “Have a good day.” I turned to Lacey, “You’re joking, right?” Lacey gave me a cheeky smile and shook her head. “Oh my God…” I turned away from my best friend, blushing. Lacey knew that I had a crush on Matt and she swore he was crushing on me.

Jamie walked in at this moment and went up to us. “Hey guys. What’s wrong with you?” she asked, looking at me with an eyebrow raised.

Lacey and I looked at each other and giggled.

“Nothing,” I answered, “What’s up? How was summer school?”

“Same,” Jamie shrugged, looking at her phone, “Mike got detention.

“Great. Dad’s going to be pissed,” Lacey let out, then greeted a customer who walked in.

“So what did you do about that Bobby kid?” Jamie asked, turning her attention back to me, “Did he finally ask you out? And did you say yes?”

“I turned him down as nicely as I could. He understood. I mean, we go to Cornwall, he goes to Monroe,” I shrugged, “It’d be pointless.”

“But he’s your coworker. His dad’s your boss. Isn’t it going to be awkward now?”

Lacey laughed at Jamie’s comment, “Have you forgotten? Today’s our last day. The store is closing for good after tonight. Notice the crazy sales and the emptiness of our shelves?”

“Even if it wasn’t,” I began, “I don’t think it’d feel awkward. I mean- he’s not really my type anyways.”

“What exactly is your type?” Jamie asked very seriously, then jumped at her cell phone ringing, “Oh, I got to take this call!” She turned away from us, “Hey!”

Lacey rolled her eyes and turned away from Jamie, “Could she be any more obvious.”

“Sorry guys, got to go,” Jamie said, turning back around, “Alex got our stuff.”

“Remind Jordan about band practice Tuesday!”

“Right! Bye!” she called back, walking out the door.

Lacey turned to face me, “Maybe Matt will ask you out tonight?”

I laughed, “Yeah and then Jamie will be on my ass even more!” I walked away from the counter to fix one of the bins.

“You are coming over, right?” she asked, holding her phone ready to answer Mike.

I rolled my eyes and smiled, “Why not.”
