We’re thrilled to feature an exclusive interview with V.J. Villamayor, the creative mind behind When Three Isn’t a Crowd, now officially released on Galatea! V.J. Villamayor’s journey from writing poetry as a teenager to becoming a signed Galatea author is nothing short of inspiring. In this candid interview, she opens up about the moments that shaped her path—from discovering Inkitt to balancing motherhood, nursing, and writing one-shots that took off in unexpected ways.

On becoming a writer

I’ve always been a daydreamer since I was little. I started with songs and poetry as a teenager, but didn’t begin writing stories until I was a 21-year-old stay-at-home mom. Reading stories on an app, I realized people were uploading works weekly—not published books—and thought I could try too.

The Inkitt discovery

Inkitt actually found me first. They discovered my stories on another platform and reached out. Other platforms wanted my work too, but Inkitt was the most supportive and easiest to work with.

The breakthrough moment

When my story ‘Every Beauty Deserves A Beast’ gained traction, I worked with an Inkitt/Galatea agent to improve it. Having meetings where they showed me trend graphs was mind-blowing—it made me feel like a real author.

On becoming a Galatea author

I found out I was being offered a Galatea contract in 2022. It was so exciting and humbling—exactly what I’d hoped for when joining Inkitt.

The surprising path to success

Ironically, my Galatea signing came after I created a book of one-shots. As a nurse, mom of three, and wife, time is my biggest challenge. The one-shots let me write when inspiration hit without stalling longer stories. I could explore different tropes and create complete scenarios even with limited time.

What she hopes readers experience

When I write, I envision scenes like they would be in a film. I try to incorporate the feel of the scenery and how characters portray emotions. I’m excited for readers to hopefully see the stories the same way I do when writing them.

Her writing philosophy

Keep writing. Even if you think it’s a ‘bad chapter,’ you can always edit a bad chapter. You can’t edit a blank page.
