TIMELESS WATERS
“The clock’s read 1:03 for the last 45 minutes, captain.”
No clicking from the second hand in the captain’s watch.
The hands are still stuck at 1:03, the exact time the harbor lights slipped under the horizon.
“Full sails back.”
“Aye-aye, full sails back.”
The ship comes about. 45 minutes later, no lights reach above the horizon.
Some compasses point north, others south.
“It’s the first mate,” someone shouts.
Some shout insults. Others agree.
“He’s changed the heading!”
The first mate knocks him out.
A fight erupts.
The captain’s watch plops into the sea.
It reads 1:04.
