Morning sunlight flooded through the towering glass windows of the thirty-second floor, casting a shimmering mirror of silent authority on the sleek marble outside Adrian Volkov’s office. From her desk, Anna Ray could oversee nearly the entire executive wing of Volkov International. Every element was pristine, meticulously arranged, commanding—a mirror of the man who ruled it.
Anna adjusted her cream blouse cuff and swiftly scanned her tablet’s schedule.
Three meetings. Two investor calls. One private lunch.
And already, a visitor was making her way upstairs.
Anna barely glanced as the elevator doors opened at the corridor’s end. The soft tap of heels on marble spoke volumes about her guest.
Gorgeous. Well-dressed. Like she had just stepped off a runway.
Within seconds, Anna could spot them.
The woman approached the reception with a confident smile masking her eager eyes. Clad in a striking red dress that hugged her every curve, her dark hair perfectly styled.
“Good morning,” she said brightly. “I’m here to see Adrian.”
Anna lifted her gaze, delivering her usual calm, professional smile. Well, at least she was respectful—no snobbery.
“Mr. Volkov is expecting you,” she replied. “May I have your name?”
“Vanessa Carter.”
Anna keyed it into the system, confirming the appointment Adrian had added late last night—rarely explained, always necessary.
She pressed the intercom button.
“Mr. Volkov, Miss Carter is here.”
A brief pause.
His voice answered, calm and commanding.
“Send her in.”
Anna rose and gestured to the grand walnut doors leading into Adrian’s office.
“This way, Miss Carter.”
The woman smoothed her dress nervously before passing Anna and slipping behind the doors.
They closed with a decisive click.
Anna returned to her desk, resuming her review of the day’s contracts.
She didn’t listen.

In eight months as Adrian Volkov’s executive secretary, Anna had learned one essential rule:

The elevator doors closed behind her.

The intercom buzzed.
“Anna.”
His voice was steady, unbothered.
“Yes, Mr. Volkov.”
“Send flowers to Miss Carter.”
Anna opened the gift order template without hesitation.
“What arrangement would you prefer?”
“White orchids.”
She typed swiftly.
“And a bracelet from Laurent Jewelers.”
Pausing only to note the price range, she confirmed.
“Of course.”
A brief silence.
“Schedule my call with Tokyo fifteen minutes earlier.”
“I’ll do that now.”
The line went dead.
Anna finalized the order—white orchids, a diamond bracelet. Routine. Mechanical.
Yet, despite how predictable Adrian Volkov’s personal life seemed, the man remained an enigma.
She saw him every day for eight months. And yet, he fascinated her.
