Chapter 1: The Sound of Change
Marsden, Yorkshire, 1812.
Thomas Hartley stood outside Blackstone Mill as smoke rose from its chimney. Inside, newly installed machines rattled and clattered, producing more cloth than skilled workers could make by hand. Each turning gear threatened another man’s livelihood. Rumors of layoffs spread through the village, and anger simmered among the workers. As darkness fell, Thomas joined a secret meeting where desperate men gathered to discuss resistance. Change had arrived—and so had rebellion.
