THE LONE SKYWALKER
********************************************************
Some kids are born lucky.
I was born trying.
Baseball bat in my hands at six years old. Basketball at eight. Cricket at ten. Every sport my dad could think of, every game my friends were playing. I threw myself at all of them like a moth hitting a screen door.
Never got through.
By seventeen, I'd memorized more strategy guides than actual homework. I could tell you the perfect combo in a fighting game, the ideal build in an RPG, the exact moment to steal a base. My fingers just never listened. My body always lagged two seconds behind my brain.
Loving something you're terrible at has its own kind of prison.
So when I saw it—the shop, the dust, the cracked CD case with Death of Gods printed in letters that looked like falling temples—I should have walked away.
I didn't.
The old man behind the counter had eyes like empty sockets. He didn't blink when I handed him crumpled bills. Didn't speak when I took the disc.
At home, my father's voice cut through the walls the instant he saw me. "Andrew! Now!"
I should have gone downstairs.
Instead, I held the disc. Felt something thrum under my fingertips. Not vibration. Not heat. Something older.
The paper inside had two lines. One I understood:
I have decided to take the place of the Gods.
The other line looked like shattered glass. Like a language that had been waiting for someone stupid enough to speak it.
Guess who opened his mouth.
The pull came from everywhere and nowhere. My ribs. My lungs. The space behind my eyes. One second I was standing in my room, 2009 bleeding through the blinds. The next I was nowhere.
Floating.
Silence so loud it hurt.
And in that silence, one thought:
So this is where it ends for me?
(Funny thing about endings.
They're usually just beginnings wearing a different mask.)
