Chapter 1: Secrets Buried With Her.

*************************************************

The funeral was perfect.

White flowers. Black suits. Crocodile tears.

And me?

I stood at the back, where secrets belong.

No one invited me.

No one knew I was there.

Except him.

His eyes found me across the graveyard the second they lowered her casket into the ground.

My mother.

His mistress.

He didn't cry.

Men like him don't cry in public.

They just clench their jaws and pretend the scandal isn't standing 20 feet away in a thrifted black dress.

His wife was there.

His perfect daughter was there.

His perfect son was there.

And then there was me.

The mistake.

The stain he tried to bury 18 years ago.

When it was over, he walked to me. Alone.

"Don't come to the house," he said quietly. Like he was ordering coffee. "Don't contact anyone. I'll send money."

I laughed. It came out bitter.

"Money? That's what you think this is about?"

His eyes flickered. For a second, I saw guilt.

Then it was gone.

"Don't make this harder than it has to be."

He turned and walked back to his family.

Back to the people who get his last name.

Back to the world that pretends I don't exist.

But here's the thing about secrets.

They don't stay buried.

Not when the woman who kept them is in the ground.

Not when I'm done being quiet.

My mother kept his secret to protect me.

Now that she's gone?

I have nothing left to lose.

And I'm done hiding.

It's finally Time to do what's right.

Queency: I love the slow burn plot of the story. Building their individual characters from childhood to adulthood. Could have been more spicier on their intimacy. Though a bit dragging by the end of the story.
