Chapter 1

The Crown Of Lies

Chapter One: First Impressions

The first day at Stach Holdings International was never really about work.

Everyone knew that.

It was about reputation.

It was about who walked through the doors with confidence, who attracted attention, and who had the power to change the future.

And nobody understood that better than the families who built their names before they were even born.

---

Juan Valemont sat in the meeting room, looking through the documents placed in front of him.

Numbers.

Plans.

Strategies.

Everything was familiar.

But something felt different.

For the first time, he wasn’t sitting beside his family.

He wasn’t protected by the Valemont name.

He was being judged by his own decisions.

“You’re quieter than I expected.”

Juan looked up.

Courtney Sterling stood near the doorway.

A small smile crossed her face.

“I thought Valemonts were supposed to be intimidating.”

Juan smiled.

“Maybe I’m disappointing people.”

Courtney laughed softly.

“Actually, I think that’s what surprises people.”

Juan looked curious.

“What?”

“You don’t act like someone who knows everyone is watching.”

For a moment, they just looked at each other.

Neither of them noticed the hallway had become quieter.

But someone else did.

Henry Sterling.

---

Henry watched from a distance.

He knew that look.

The look people gave when they were interested.

And he knew his sister.

Courtney wasn’t someone who easily trusted people.

Especially not someone with the last name Valemont.

“Henry.”

Samia’s voice interrupted him.

He turned around.

“You’re doing it again.”

“Doing what?”

“Watching everyone like they’re a threat.”

Henry sighed.

“I’m protecting this family.”

Samia shook her head.

“Sometimes I think you’re protecting the Sterling name more than you’re protecting us.”

The words stayed with him.

Because they hurt more than he wanted to admit.

---

Later that afternoon, Juan met more of the families.

Noni Ashford arrived with his brother Pedro and sister Tia.

The Ashfords were different from the Valemonts.

They weren’t quiet.

They were confident.

They entered every room like they belonged there.

“Finally,” Pedro said, shaking Juan’s hand.

“I was wondering when the famous Valemont would show up.”

Juan smiled.

“Famous isn’t always a good thing.”

Pedro laughed.

“Trust me, I know.”

---

On the other side of the building, the Sinclair family arrived.

Pmax Sinclair.

Nicole Sinclair.

Jason Sinclair.

Unlike the others, they didn’t need attention.

They had influence.

Pmax looked across the room at Juan.

“So that’s him.”

Jason nodded.

“The Valemont heir.”

Pmax smiled.

“Interesting.”

Nicole looked at him.

“You’re already planning something.”

Pmax shrugged.

“I’m just curious.”

“About what?”

He looked back at Juan.

“How someone with everything can still look like they’re searching for something.”

---

That evening, a company celebration was held.

Music filled the hall.

Everyone dressed perfectly.

Everyone smiled.

Everyone pretended.

Juan stood near the balcony, watching the city lights.

“You look like you’re trying to escape.”

He turned.

It was Courtney again.

“Maybe I am.”

She smiled.

“Funny. Everyone here wants to be seen, but you look like you want to disappear.”

Juan looked at her.

“And you?”

Courtney looked back at the crowd.

“I think I’ve spent my whole life pretending I’m exactly where I want to be.”

Before Juan could answer, a voice interrupted.

“Courtney.”

Henry.

The moment changed.

Henry looked at Juan.

Not with anger.

With caution.

“Enjoying your first day?”

Juan nodded.

“I am.”

Henry stepped closer.

“Good. Just remember something, Juan.”

“What?”

Henry looked around the room full of powerful people.

“Here, people don’t always fall because they’re weak.”

He paused.

“Sometimes they fall because they trust the wrong person.”

Juan watched him walk away.

And for the first time that day…

he wondered if Henry Sterling was warning him.

Or threatening him.

Because at Stach Holdings International…

every smile had a hidden meaning.
