Miami Nights: A Dangerous Hustle

I was performing on the pole that evening, my body contorting and spinning around the cool metal. Gripping it tightly between my thighs, I arched backward in a slow, fluid motion—a move reminiscent of childhood gymnastics I never imagined would translate to this stage. Yet here I was, my life’s path having led me to this unexpected career in exotic dance.
At Club Elysium in Miami, Florida, I shared the stage with dancers of every shade—white, Hispanic, Asian, and Black like myself. My costume left little to imagination: a cropped top revealing ample cleavage and a flimsy purple g-string that barely served its purpose.
I had already tucked several crisp bills into my g-string before stepping onto the stage that night. As I moved closer to the eager patrons lining the edge of the club, their generosity only grew—I could feel their fingers pressing folded cash against my skin with each sensual sway of my hips.
I received only a cut of those earnings, yet it covered my expenses. After each show, I’d transition into serving drinks to the patrons—something all the girls did. It came with the territory; I’d strut through the crowd in my stilettos, taking orders with practiced allure.
I tolerated the occasional pat on my ass from patrons, even though it was technically against club rules—they always tipped better for it. But I drew a firm line when someone crossed into outright groping or attempted to touch my pussy. That was absolutely unacceptable.
After the last call faded and I’d counted my earnings for the night, I made the familiar trek back to my apartment. Once inside, I tossed my bag onto a chair—the sequined costume still tucked away—and collapsed onto the bed with a weary sigh. My extensions were carefully arranged to mimic straightened natural hair, a look that drove both Black and white patrons wild. But now, it was just me and the lingering scent of sweat and cheap perfume clinging to my skin.
I flipped on the television, and there it was—the news blaring out another story. A young Black teen gunned down in Georgia, Atlanta this time. They flashed Malik Johnson’s photo across the screen: bright-eyed kid, cut down in a hail of bullets while playing ball with friends. Just another day ending in senseless murder. White cops with badges and itchy trigger fingers, I thought bitterly. Always an excuse, never justice.
The screen then shifted to a different angle—thousands of protestors flooding the streets of downtown Atlanta. At the forefront, a strong Black woman led the charge with fierce determination. Kiara Washington, her name instantly recognizable to me. I respected her deeply for her activism, even though I suspected she’d frown upon my choice of profession.
I had been tuning in to her podcasts lately; that woman could really command attention. I’m no activist, but the fervor in her voice stirred something within me—something raw and urgent. If I were in Georgia, I would have marched alongside her without hesitation.

Albert clapped a heavy hand on my shoulder just as I was wrestling with a stubborn line of code, sending my headphones skittering sideways. “Shit,” I snapped, my heart lurching against my ribs. Albert glanced up from his monitor, a sheepish grin spreading across his face. “My bad—was that a bad time?” I shot him an exasperated glare, rubbing my temples where tension had begun to gather. “You think? Damn it all—I’ve lost my focus completely now.”
“Looking forward to Miami?” Albert asked. I let out a weary sigh, my thoughts momentarily drifting from the code. “Yeah, never been to America before. Imagine working all these years and never visiting their headquarters.” Silo Technologies was a massive US fintech company, and I’d been thrilled when they hired me. I typically worked in their London office—one of hundreds worldwide—but this trip marked my first visit to their American base.
“I’ve even been brushing up on my American,” I quipped with a smirk, which only deepened the crease forming between Albert’s brows. “What?” he asked, genuinely perplexed. “They speak English, you know.” I rolled my eyes playfully. “I’m aware of that, you dick!”
I tried on an American drawl. “Reckon I’ll say things like, ‘Y’all know what I’m about?’ when I get there.” Albert eyed me skeptically. “You pull that off,” he warned, “they might just take aim and fire.” I had to admit—he wasn’t wrong to worry. One nagging fear about touching down in the States? Getting shot.
“You know those American girls go wild for English accents,” Albert declared with a sly grin, “I’m going to lay it on thick with the posh talk and get me some of that sugar.” I couldn’t resist a jab back. “You can’t be posh, you’re a cockney bastard.” He merely shrugged off my remark. “To them, it’s the same thing.”
Our flight was in a few days, and though excitement hummed beneath the surface, I couldn’t shake the anxiety of flying into the unknown. My understanding of America had been filtered solely through films, sitcoms, and news reports about Trump’s era—a patchwork of cultural references that felt more like fiction than reality.
Although romance wasn’t exactly on my agenda, I have to admit—I’m rather partial to the American accent. And if my London twang could lend me a bit of charm stateside, well, I wouldn’t mind turning that to my advantage. Truth be told, impressing English women hasn’t come easily lately. With my divorce finalized a couple of years back, I’ve mostly kept to myself and haven’t ventured much into dating again.

I was out with Maria, my coworker at Club Elysium and a dear friend. With her Latin roots and that dazzling energy, she made even our casual strolls through downtown Florida feel like an adventure. That afternoon, as we wandered in and out of shops, our arms linked together, I couldn’t help but appreciate how her presence grounded me amid all the backstage chaos.
Maria was a provocateur, always dressed to captivate with revealing outfits. That afternoon, she wore very short shorts paired with a string-strapped top that accentuated her ample breasts while her high heels added to her striking silhouette.
Her accent was captivating—American Latin, laced with a bold sassy edge that colored every word she spoke, whether she was addressing a friend or a stranger.
I wore a cropped top paired with a short skirt that revealed my midriff and the delicate stud adorning my bellybutton, complemented by high heels. Together, we strode along the bustling street, our animated chatter and unrestrained laughter drawing disapproving stares from passersby.
“What are you staring at?” Maria shouted at a passerby as the man lowered his eyes and carried on walking. With a defiant smirk, she called after him, “That’s right biatch, keep walking.” Turning to me, she grinned widely before we both burst into laughter.

“Man, where the hell are we?” Albert muttered as we navigated downtown Florida. “My phone’s dead; I can’t pull up the map. The cabbie dumped us in the middle of nowhere.”
As Albert and I wandered further, storefronts blurred into a dizzying procession. Every few steps, another pedestrian would bump into me without so much as an “excuse me.” My frustration mounted with each jostle until finally, I spun around to glare at a man who’d just shoved past. “What the fuck’s up with them?” I snapped, watching his indifferent retreat down the pavement.
We eventually stumbled upon our hotel, having neglected to provide precise directions to the taxi driver who’d abandoned us several blocks away in a manner that Americans might describe as being stranded a few streets from our destination.
As we finally reached the reception desk, I couldn’t help but notice that the hotel wasn’t exactly luxurious. The woman behind the counter seemed to immediately recognize our British accents. Albert then attempted to sound as posh as possible, saying, “Thank you very much indeed.”
“We ought to explore the local nightlife,” he remarked, “I’ve been hearing all sorts of tales about those titty bars.”
“From what I understand,” I added, “they refer to them as strip clubs here. We should make an effort to fit in a bit.”
Albert had always been the wild card at our London office, blessed with a natural charisma that drew people to him despite his abrasive East London accent. It baffled me how effortlessly women gravitated toward him—his effortless charm only made his antics all the more exasperating.
“Anyway,” I continued, “tomorrow we’ll need to head over to the local office and finally meet everyone we’ve only ever seen on video calls all these years.”
After shaking off some of the jet lag with a brief nap, Albert and I ventured out to experience the city’s nightlife. I kept my passport and cash secure in a bag fastened at my hip. Albert glanced over and remarked with a smirk, “That satchel’s going to make us look like proper tourists—surely you’ve got pockets for that lot.”
“It’s practical,” I said, adjusting the strap at my hip. Albert gave a wry grin. “Yeah, and it’ll send every woman running for the hills.” I shrugged it off with a dismissive wave. “Not that I’m chasing anyone tonight.”
As we approached one of the strip clubs, I noticed the bouncer standing watch—a burly black man whose imposing presence immediately commanded respect. “I certainly wouldn’t want to mess with him,” I muttered quietly. Albert, unfazed, stepped forward and extended his hand for a handshake. “Hey mate, how’s it going? We’re from the UK,” he announced cheerfully, though the bouncer remained stern-faced with his arms crossed firmly over his chest.
“Twenty dollars cover charge each, and you must buy a drink before sitting to watch the show”, he stated bluntly without any unnecessary words.
After stepping inside, the scene unfolded just as the movies had depicted it. The stage was indeed lined with nearly nude women, a couple of poles spaced apart where two dancers performed their sensual routines, and another performer positioned centrally near the patrons. She knelt with her legs spread wide, leaning forward invitingly to collect money tucked into her bra.
We ordered a couple beers at the bar, then lingered there watching the stage. Albert leaned in and remarked, “I’d really like to get up close to the stage - they’re absolutely stunning.”
Of course, Albert had a point—the kind of women who landed center stage usually possessed both striking beauty and sculpted figures, making their allure impossible to deny.
My gaze locked onto a captivating black dancer, her movements fluid as she wrapped herself around the pole with effortless grace. Each spin and contortion was so unexpected it left me momentarily stunned.
I felt a sudden stiffness between my legs, my pulse quickening as I watched her remove that minuscule g-string. With each sensual twist and grind against the pole, she moved with raw abandon, utterly exposed yet commanding attention.
I couldn’t tear my eyes away from her. Even as she slid down the pole with her waist bared, every sinuous move showcased her raw sensuality. Her arse jiggled tantalisingly with each deliberate gyration, and she boldly flashed her exposed pussy in our direction as she widened her knees, whipping her hair back in a display of unbridled confidence.
And then, just as the tension in my trousers reached its peak—bloody hell, I nearly lost it right there—the black dancer caught my eye from clear across the room. She held my gaze for a breathless moment before flashing me a sly wink. Fucking hell, I was in love.
“Looks like she’s got you fucking hard,” Albert remarked with a knowing smirk, though I barely registered his words. A moment later, he gave my arm a light tap. “Steady on, mate.” “Fuck off,” I muttered without shifting my gaze from her, transfixed by the dancer’s hypnotic performance.

Damn, my g-string must’ve been snatched by some eager bastard as I stepped off stage. My heels clicked sharply against the floor as I strutted through the club, bare-ass naked from the waist down while rowdy cheers erupted all around. I tossed out a few playful air kisses to the hooting crowd before turning to flash a cheeky glimpse of my ass toward the bar. Sashaying over, I cupped my hands around my mouth and called out, “Hey Michael!” He appeared behind the counter almost instantly, his grin matching mine as he prepared my usual. “Give us a Mojito, will ya?” I asked with a wink. “Coming right up Shakira,” he replied, already mixing up my drink with practiced ease.
I glimpsed the white man next to me, clocking how he couldn’t peel his eyes off me. Flashing him a grin, I noticed the bag strapped to his hip - clearly not from around here. “Nice purse,” I teased with a laugh. The poor guy stuttered out a shaky “Th-thank you” before I busted up giggling.
He had a strange accent, nothing like what I was used to hearing around the club. “You’re not from around here, are you?” I asked as he stared at me wide-eyed. He shook his head slowly. “I’m an alien,” he stammered out. My brows knitted together in confusion. “What?” I pressed, not quite catching his meaning. “I’m from London,” he clarified with a nervous smile. My face lit up with recognition. “Oh! You’re British?” I exclaimed delightedly, then tried mimicking his accent playfully. “How delightful,” I said, doing my best impression of proper English speech.

It was confirmed, I was definitely in love with this woman. It’s not everyday you come across the woman you love with her bare arse and pussy on full display.
“What’s your name?” she asked. I told her, “Simon.” With a nod, she introduced herself, “My name is Shakira.” I couldn’t resist adding, “Like the singer?” which earned me an eye roll and a quick nod from her.
A man sidled up to Shakira, giving her a pointed look. “Yo, Shakira, quit slackin’. Ain’t no way those drinks gonna pour theyself,” he said with a smirk. Rolling her eyes, Shakira shot back, “Chill out, Dom—I’m catchin’ my breath over here. Plus, I misplaced my damn g-string.”
He smacked her bare arse with a teasing grin. “C’mon, quit dawdlin’,” he said as she yelped playfully. “Pervert!” she called out with a laugh, shaking her head at him as he winked back.
She grabbed a tray from the counter right after downing her drink. “Mind if I buy you one later?” I ventured. With an apologetic shrug, she replied, “Sweetie, I don’t take drinks from strangers—gotta hustle these tables.” Then she planted a quick peck on my cheek before sauntering away, balancing that tray like a pro.
I touched my cheek, savoring the lingering warmth where her lips had brushed my skin. That spot wouldn’t see soap or water for days.
Albert placed his hand on my shoulder, his voice low and thoughtful as he remarked, “Stunning bird, isn’t she?” I could only manage a silent nod of agreement. With a wistful sigh, he added, “Real shame we’ve only got a few days here.”
That was a bloody shame as I watched Shakira deliver drinks to the punters at the tables. Every time she leaned over, that gorgeous bare arse was practically staring me right in the face.
The following day, Albert and I headed over to Silo Technologies’ main office in Miami. There we met up with several of my American colleagues for the first time, gathering for a meeting at their rather spacious headquarters. It struck me how American buildings really do seem to favor grand scale - everything about the place felt impressively oversized.
We covered all sorts of work-related topics regarding our new app, which I’d been developing since the project’s inception and was now nearly ready for launch.
In the back of my mind, Shakira lingered—a constant presence that wouldn’t fade. Everything about her was truly remarkable. Though I barely knew her, it wasn’t merely her striking appearance that captivated me; it was her undeniable charm, graceful poise, and the commanding way she carried herself.
I really fancied seeing her again, but if I went to the club it might look a bit dodgy—like I was proper stalking her. What was I even thinking? She’s probably used to blokes lusting after her anyway. What made me so special?
It was just a fleeting dream, knowing full well I’d only be here for a few days. Chances were slim to none I’d ever cross paths with her again. Yet in that brief interlude, she shone brighter than anyone I’d encountered before—at least anyone I’d met at a strip club.

“Are you certain, Maria?” I asked over the phone, my voice tinged with hesitation. “Sounds a bit risky, doesn’t it?” I pressed gently, hoping she’d reconsider.
“No girl, you can make almost triple what you do at the club,” Maria said as I mulled it over. She was suggesting heading to motels for more intimate lap dances with clients, but it sounded risky without anyone else around.
“I don’t like it, I ain’t no hoe,” I told her flatly. “Hey girl, I ain’t either—but sometimes clients might ask for something a lil’ extra, ya feel me?” Maria shot back, and I let out a heavy sigh. “Alright then—how much more are we talkin’ ’bout exactly?” I asked, needing to hear the numbers. She paused before answering: “One night I pulled in a grand.” My eyebrows shot up in disbelief. “For a lap dance?” I pressed skeptically, and she added with a sly grin, “I threw in some bonus touches and grinding—just enough to get ’em real worked up, ya know.”
I shook my head slowly, feeling uneasy. “Nah, I don’t think so—I’m just not down with that,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. Maria sighed on the other end of the line before replying, “Look, if you change your mind later, just hit me up—you know I’m letting you in on this ’cause we tight.” She paused briefly before adding, “And hey, don’t trip—Dom ain’t involved in setting this up. I got my own connect who hooks me up with these clients on the side.”
I knew damn well what kind of folks she was talking about—her Latino connections, those scary-ass motherfuckers. Hell no was I getting anywhere near that shit. I ended the call, shaking my head. I loved Maria like family, but sometimes that girl could be downright reckless.
I tossed my phone onto the thin mattress, the springs groaning beneath the worn sheets. This cramped studio was all I could manage—bare walls closing in from every side. The damn building felt like it was breathing; distant shouts and thumping bass leaked through the sealed window, while icy drafts snaked through cracks in the plaster. Fuck this place.
The damn landlord never lifted a finger to fix anything, and I sure as hell wasn’t about to let it slide—I’d called him constantly to patch up these cracks right. But then there was my ex-boyfriend Darius; that man was utterly useless when it came to repairs. His big solution? Slap some cheap tape over the gaps—a half-assed fix that peeled off in days, leaving everything looking worse than before.
He always just wanted to fuck, plain and simple—and once he got what he wanted, he’d bolt outta there faster than a crackhead running from a cop. Left me feeling like some cheap piece of ass he picked up for the night. And yeah, he damn well knew where I worked, but that shit didn’t faze him one bit—or maybe he just didn’t give a fuck.
I mulled over Maria’s proposition. What if I gave it a shot, just once—to see if I could bank more cash in one night than I scrape together all week at the club? It would definitely ease some pressure. I weighed the risks and potential payoff for a long moment, my mind churning through every possible angle.

As I roamed the busy city streets, my attention gravitated toward the imposing electronics stores lining the thoroughfares. Surrounded by sleek gadgets and cutting-edge devices, my thoughts sharpened around advancements in artificial intelligence—a domain I’d delved deeply into during my tenure at Silo Technologies. My work had even extended to implementing voice authorization systems that utilized AI to assess vocal tone patterns.
Resisting the urge to splurge on gadgets, I flagged down a cab instead. The driver pulled over and I climbed in, giving him the hotel’s address. As we merged into traffic, my thoughts drifted aimlessly—work deadlines, the quiet emptiness of home, lingering bitterness about my ex-wife—and then Shakira’s name surfaced in my mind, stirring up a whole other set of emotions.
Albert had warned me against getting hung up on this dancer from Miami—like I should know better than to expect anything real. But he made chatting up women look easy, while for me, it was always a struggle just to get words out right.
About twenty minutes later the cab screeched to a halt and I paid the driver without really registering where we were. Stepping out onto the sidewalk, my gaze darted around as realization hit me—I wasn’t anywhere near my hotel. “This ain’t my hotel,” I muttered under my breath just as the cab peeled away, leaving me stranded in unfamiliar territory.
I found myself abandoned on the roadside, the only structure in sight being a rundown motel. Had the cabbie misunderstood my destination entirely? I scanned the deserted street, searching for another taxi to hail, but not a single vehicle was in view.
It was getting late and I had no clue where the hell I was, for all I knew, every damn room in that fleabag motel probably had some shady deal going down inside—just like you see in films.
With a resigned exhale, I figured I’d better approach the front desk to get a room for the night. Not that I had much choice—my phone was totally dead, no signal whatsoever in this godforsaken area.

I’d gotten a ride to this dump from one of Maria’s contacts. Sure enough, he was Latino—didn’t say nufin’ the whole way, just scooped me up from my spot and dumped me here. And let me tell ya, I wasn’t liking this setup one damn bit.
The Neon Mirage Motel. Even the name made me uneasy. My outfit—a snug black skirt paired with lacy matching underwear, a cropped purple top showing off my belly, and a jacket that barely cut through the chill—felt more like a costume than armor as I teetered on high heels toward room ten, where some john waited inside.
As I approached room ten on the ground level, I noticed a couple cars scattered in the parking spots. One of ’em was some shiny-ass sports car parked right outside the room, and I figured that ride definitely belonged to this john waiting inside.
I got ready to knock, but stopped myself for a beat to suck in some air. My fist hung there, set to bang on the door, before I finally rapped three sharp knocks and dropped my arms back down by my sides.
Hearing movement behind the door, I paused mid-knock. A sliver of light cut through as it cracked open and a pair of wary eyes studied me. Tilting my head slightly, I announced, “I’m Shakira,” and the man widened the door, gesturing for me to come inside.
Stepping into the room as he closed the door behind us, I lingered near the entrance. He settled on the edge of the mattress, his gaze sweeping over me with slow deliberation. My fingers tightened around my purse straps, clutching the bag low between my knees as I scanned the cramped space, searching for some cue on how to proceed.
I slipped off my jacket, cool air prickling my bare arms. My top dipped low, putting plenty on display. “So what’s your pleasure?” I asked, trying to keep it businesslike. He just shrugged like it was no big thing. “Ain’t you s’posed to know? Just do whatever you’re paid to do.” That’s when I laid it out straight: “Hold up now—I ain’t no hooker and this ain’t about sex, ya feel me?”
“Whatever,” he muttered as I blew out a slow breath, lips pressed together. Then I started moving my hips in a smooth circle, fingertips grazing my curves on the way up. My hands slid through my hair before twirling higher while my body rolled with sensual rhythm.
Turning around with deliberate slowness, I arched my back sharply to make my ass stand out, then stepped in close so that my body nearly brushed his face. Lowering myself onto his lap, I began rolling my hips in a steady, circular motion, feeling the unmistakable ridge of his hard cock pressing against the thin fabric of my tight skirt.
The tight fabric of my skirt crept higher as I worked my hips, deliberately flashing a glimpse of lace beneath. His hand landed on my ass as I tensed instinctively—this kind of contact wasn’t allowed at the club, but here it’s different.
His hands found my bare hips, gripping firm enough to steer my movements along with the music, his body pressing into mine like he wanted to claim me right through the damn fabric. I didn’t let up on the grinding, my voice dropping to a low purr. “Is this what you like?” And that’s when he hit me with it plain: “What I’d like is to fuck you up the ass.”
I froze mid-motion, my pulse quickening. He’d crossed a line—what we had going was strictly touch and grind, nothing more. “Relax,” he tried to downplay it, adding quickly, “I was just playing.” Still, my throat tightened as I swallowed hard and forced myself to keep moving.
“Turn around and grind me,” he commanded, impatience clipping his words. I rose on shaky legs, pivoting to face away before easing back onto his lap. My hips resumed their circular motion mechanically, eyes deliberately fixed downward to avoid his gaze. “Look at me,” he demanded gruffly, fingers digging into my flesh as he wrenched my chin up with one hand. Hesitantly meeting his stare, I felt his other palm slide possessively along my hipbone.
I rested my palms on his shoulders and locked eyes with him, rolling my hips in slow circles as my ass ground against the hard ridge of his cock straining through the denim. A low groan rumbled from deep in his chest and he squeezed his lids shut, fingers digging into my flesh as he tugged me closer. His hands guided me up and down along his shaft, the rough fabric scraping against my sensitive skin with every thrust of my hips. Each time I slammed back down, a jolt shot through me—the damp lace of my panties bunching uncomfortably between my thighs.
Then he froze and grunted, his body tensing up beneath me. Motherfucker was nutting in his damn pants. I could feel the hot mess seeping right through his jeans, leaving this nasty wet spot that damn near soaked into my underwear where it met my skin. I peeled myself off him quick, but shit—it felt like he’d just fucked me anyway without ever sticking it in.
He dug out his wallet, peeling off a few bills as he shoved them into my hand. My eyebrows knotted up tight as I counted out the cash—two hundred lousy bucks. “The fuck is this shit?” I snapped, waving the money in his face like it was trash.
“You got exactly what you deserved,” he muttered. “Fuck you, you pathetic piece of shit,” I spat back. “You damn near fucked me.” He let out a mocking laugh. “Yeah right, if I’d actually done that, you sure as hell would’ve known it.”
“I need at least 400 more,” I demanded, glaring at him. “Get out, you fucking whore,” he spat back, his words slicing through me like a knife. Heat surged to my face as I saw red. “I’m no whore, you fuck!” The insult flew from my lips before I could stop it. He sneered, cold and dismissive. “You’re all the same—take what I gave you and fuck off.”
In a flash of fury, I hauled off and smacked the bastard across his face. My eyes flew wide as hell when he snatched me by the throat, slamming my back against the cold room wall. His face got all up close in mine, growling, “You’re goddamn lucky I’m feeling nice today.”
“I need more,” I hissed, my jaw set hard with determination. Before he could even blink, I launched my knee straight up into his balls with every ounce of strength I had. He crumpled forward like a rag doll, gasping for air. Seizing my chance, I snatched up my bag and dug my fingers into his pocket, yanking out his wallet. My hands trembled as I ripped out a few extra bills while he tried to grab at my leg. I kicked him square in the ribs and bolted the hell out of there before he could recover.
I knew I couldn’t run far enough to escape him. Shakira, you’re so damn stupid, I chided myself silently. If I bolted into the darkness, he’d hunt me down.

As I finally managed to shut my eyes on that lumpy motel mattress, every spring digging into my back, I couldn’t shake how damn uneasy I felt being there. All I wanted was for morning to come fast so I couldgo back to my own hotel where things made sense again.
My eyes snapped open at the commotion outside, the noises growing louder until they reached my door. I heard a rapid knocking, almost frantic, as if someone were stumbling along the hallway. Then came the thumping on my door, each beat sending a jolt through me. “Is anyone there?” a woman’s voice called out from behind the wood, her words trembling with urgency. “Please I need help,” she pleaded. It took me a moment to gather myself and rise, my pulse racing as I hesitated before answering.
I knew opening the door to strangers in such a place could spell trouble, yet something compelled me. Heart thudding, I crept toward the window and peered through the grimy pane. Outside, a panicked Black woman glanced around furtively as if considering flight to the next room. Against my better judgment, I turned the handle and cracked open the door.
As I leaned out further to see, she was already rushing to the next door down. Her wild eyes darted everywhere as she pounded on it with desperate fists, auburn curls half-obscuring her terrified face.
Should I say something? My hands shook as I watched her, frozen by indecision. Then, her gaze locked onto mine—those wide, frightened eyes—and she bolted straight for my door. Before I could react, she nearly shoved her way inside, slamming the door shut behind us.
She peeked through the curtain, her body quivering as she scanned the parking lot. A prostitute, no doubt, I concluded silently.
But then a darker thought slithered into my mind. Was this all an act? A desperate con to lure some fool like me into a trap? My stomach knotted as I weighed the risks—I might be stepping into danger, or I might be abandoning someone who truly needed help. Either way, there was no turning back now; I had to choose a path and live with the consequences.
My voice wavered as I asked, “Are you alright?” She gave no reply, her attention fixed on the window while my fingers raked through my hair repeatedly. Turning away, I released a heavy sigh.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered as I jerked my head toward her. Her voice trembled as she added, “I just need a place to hide quickly, someone may be after me.” The words hung in the air like a threat. Another possibility gnawed at me—if whoever pursued her was dangerous, I might be dragged into the middle of it all.
“Alright,” I said, forcing composure despite my racing thoughts. “How long will you need shelter here?” Her brow creased as she studied me more intently. “That accent of yours,” she murmured slowly, “I believe I’ve heard it somewhere before.”
“Yeah, I’m from the UK,” I confirmed, my tone measured despite the tension coiling in my gut. Her eyes flashed with sudden recognition. “Simon?” she asked, her voice laced with disbelief. My own eyes widened involuntarily – how could she possibly know my name? “Yeeaahh?” I replied skeptically, suspicion sharpening my tone. “How did you know my name?”
“It’s me Shakira from the club the other night, you probably don’t remember me” she said as I froze in shock. Not remember her? She was practically etched forever in my subconscious. And here she stood in my motel room—the very woman I’d become infatuated with that night, her bare arse deliberately pushed toward me as she danced on that pole.
“I remember you,” I said, my voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through me. “You lost your g-string.” A faint blush colored her cheeks as she chuckled at the memory.
“How did you remember me?” I pressed, still bewildered. “Out of all those people, you remembered my name.” “Your purse,” she clarified, a knowing smile playing at her lips, “and that accent of yours—it stood out in the crowd.” My gaze drifted to the worn leather satchel resting beside me. “It’s a satchel,” I corrected gently, running my thumb along its frayed edge. “Quite practical for holding everything together, really.”
As she glanced toward the window again, she abruptly snapped the curtain shut and dropped into a crouch, my pulse quickening with concern—for her, for us both.
“Close the light,” she breathed, her voice barely audible. I reached over immediately and switched off the lamp. In the sudden darkness she pulled me toward her with urgent hands, guiding me down into a crouch beneath the window.
Footsteps approached the front door, each step measured and deliberate. Then came the knock—a heavy, pounding sound reverberating through the room. It was clear someone had used the full force of their palm against the wood. Shakira and I froze in unison, our mouths falling open as her fingers dug into my arms with a grip born of pure fear.
They lingered at my door for a moment before finally leaving, apparently convinced no one was inside. I instinctively moved toward the window to peer out, but Shakira’s firm grasp on my arm pulled me back. “Not yet,” she whispered urgently, her voice trembling slightly as she held me in place.
I studied her profile in the dim light filtering through the window, captivated by how shadows played across her elegant features. She remained preoccupied, her attention fixed somewhere distant. That fleeting moment of admiration vanished when she turned and met my stare—I quickly shifted my gaze away, heat rising in my neck.
“Do you have a car?” she asked. I shook my head. “The cab driver dropped me off here. I was trying to get to my hotel, but he left me at the wrong place and disappeared.”
“I could call my friend, see if she can give me a lift,” she said, her voice steady despite the tension. “But first I need to be sure that bastard has really gone.”
I offered reassurance. “You’re welcome to stay as long as necessary.” A grateful smile touched her lips. “Thank you,” she murmured, her voice carrying quiet relief amidst the lingering tension.
We remained huddled beneath the window, the darkness pressing in around us. My knees throbbed with stiffness, and as I shifted to relieve the ache, my legs buckled unexpectedly. Losing my balance, I tumbled backward onto the floor. In that abrupt motion, my grip instinctively tightened on Shakira’s arms, pulling her down with me until we landed in a tangled heap—her body settling atop mine as our gazes locked directly, our faces hovering just inches apart.

“I... I’m so sorry” he stammered, his voice trembling with embarrassment. I couldn’t suppress a playful smirk as I teased, “Simon, I thought you were a gentleman—what happened to that drink you promised?” His cheeks flushed crimson as he fumbled for an explanation. “You turned it down,” he reminded me awkwardly.
“I could use a stiff one,” I purred, letting the innuendo hang provocatively in the air. Simon’s eyes grew wide, his Adam’s apple bobbing visibly as he swallowed hard. “Can I buy you a drink, Shakira?” he managed to ask, his voice trembling slightly. I pretended to consider it for a moment, enjoying how his gaze lingered on my lips before meeting my eyes again. “Why not,” I said playfully, then reached out and cupped his face firmly between my hands. Pulling him close, I captured his mouth in a deep, passionate kiss that left us both breathless.

My pulse quickened as this stunning exotic dancer’s lips met mine, the warmth of her kiss stirring something deep within me. How had fate led me here, to this unexpected moment? I owed that taxi driver a debt of gratitude for his error in dropping me off at the wrong place.
Side by side, a careful space between us, we settled onto the bed and began talking in hushed tones. Shakira’s voice was soft yet resolute as she recounted the events that had brought her here tonight. “I’m not a thief,” she insisted with quiet conviction, “I just took what I felt I deserved.” Her words hung heavy in the dim light of the room, and though her admission surprised me, I found myself accepting it without judgment—I hadn’t even considered questioning her actions.
“Having financial difficulties can make us do some crazy things,” I remarked as her gaze met mine. “Wow,” she responded softly, her eyes searching my face as I gently inquired, “What?”
“You make it sound so sophisticated,” she remarked, her voice carrying a hint of irony. “Most folks wouldn’t hesitate to call me a broke-ass n****.” The term struck me with its rawness, leaving me momentarily speechless as I processed her blunt honesty.
“I guess you can put it like that,” I replied, realizing that word gets thrown around plenty within the black community—not as a weapon, but more as casual banter.
As we lay there, our gazes fixed upon the ceiling, a strange sense of wonder washed over me. Here I was, sharing this quiet intimacy with an extraordinary woman—a connection that felt both immediate and profound. But soon, the gentle rhythm of Shakira’s breathing shifted into the soft, steady cadence of sleep. A faint smile touched my lips as I watched her drift off; exhaustion had finally claimed her after everything she’d endured. I closed my eyes then, letting the tranquility of the moment carry me into slumber too.

My eyelids fluttered open, my head still fuzzy with remnants of sleep. A dull ache throbbed behind my temples as sunlight streamed through the window. My arm rested over the man beside me, his chest rising steadily beneath my cheek—Simon.
My gaze traveled upward, meeting Simon’s alert eyes as I squinted in the morning light. “How long have you been awake?” I murmured. He hesitated before answering, “Nearly half an hour—I wasn’t sure if you meant to hold me, so I just stayed still until you stirred.”
I stretched out a lazy yawn, my mouth gaping wide as I muttered, “I ain’t used to sharing no bed. Most mornings I wake up hanging halfway off with my arms and legs dangling everywhere—sometimes I even roll right onto the damn floor.”
“I was ready to catch you if you were to fall,” he said. I placed my palm on his chest and propped my chin on it, peering into his eyes. “You got no idea what you’re catching, Simon—I’m contagious,” I teased with a playful smirk.
“Maybe we ought to call a cab and head back to the city,” he suggested. I nodded, “Mind if I grab a shower first?” His eyes flashed surprise, “Of course,” he answered as I stood up and walked toward the bathroom.
I peeled off my clothes piece by piece, letting them drop carelessly to the tile floor. Stepping into the tub, I twisted the faucet and stood beneath the cascade of hot water. The spray washed over my naked skin as I shut my eyes, sinking into its soothing heat.
Simon was cute, I thought with a faint smile crossing my lips. My mind wandered to practical matters as the hot water cascaded over me—I wonder how much money he makes. That led to thoughts of Darius; I recalled how little he’d ever had in his bank account, shaking my head slightly at my own past choices. I couldn’t believe I’d dated his broke ass.

As Shakira showered, her phone lay forgotten on the bathroom counter. It suddenly buzzed with an incoming call, Maria’s name flashing across the screen. I picked it up and gave a firm knock on the door. “Yeaahhh!” came her muffled reply over the rush of water. “Your phone’s ringing,” I called back through the door.
“Come in,” she called out as I slowly turned the handle, keeping my gaze trained on the floor. “Answer it and put it on speaker,” she instructed through the steam. I followed her directions without hesitation.
“Maria?” Shakira answered, her voice echoing off the tiled walls. “Yo Shakira, what happened last night? I heard some shit went down,” Maria pressed urgently. “Rico was pissed—what did you do to that guy?” she demanded, worry sharpening her tone.
“He was a total piece of shit Maria,” Shakira said boldly, her voice carrying over the running water. “He only gave me two measly hundred bucks for the extra service I provided him, so I kicked his ass and took what was owed.” Maria’s shocked response crackled through the phone, “Oh my god, you puta! Don’t you know what you’ve done?”
“That client, he got connections girl, he’s after your ass now” Maria said as I looked at Shakira with concern, Shakira also slightly uncomfortable as she froze, “I couldn’t just leave without getting paid properly” Shakira stated.
Shakira shut off the shower then stepped out completely naked. She grabbed her phone from my hands, speaking more directly to Maria now, standing there like she owned the place.
“Maria? What are you saying? Am I in some kind of trouble?” she asked with growing unease. Through the phone, I caught Maria’s irritated sigh before she continued, “I spoke with Rico, told him you’re my girl and you must’ve had a damn good reason for what went down.”
I took the towel from the rack and draped it over her shoulders. I wasn’t sure if she even noticed - she seemed frozen in place, still locked in that tense call with Maria. Then Shakira’s voice came through again, “We need a ride back,” she said abruptly. Over the line, Maria shot back, “We? Who’s we?”
Shakira glanced at me then, my breath snagged in my throat. Shit, what the hell was I getting dragged into here? And with that, she added, “He’s someone who was there when I needed him, he needs a ride home as well” she said.

I ended the call, Maria was coming by in her car to pick us up. I noticed the towel draped over my shoulder as I wrapped it around me, offering a faint smile at him. “Sorry, I should have exited, I didn’t look I swear,” he muttered awkwardly. “Why?” I teased him with a playful smirk. “Don’t you like what you see?”
I sat in the front passenger seat as Maria drove, Simon sitting quietly in the back. Maria muttered under her breath, “Ese cabrón de Rico y sus pinches clientes.” The tension hung thick in the air as we sped along the morning streets. I kept glancing at Simon through the rearview mirror, wondering what he was thinking after witnessing that whole mess. His silence unnerved me almost as much as Maria’s simmering anger.

Maria eventually pulled over near a nondescript warehouse district. “This is far enough,” she said sharply before turning to face me directly. “Hey puta, get out!” My eyes widened as I peered out at the desolate street, asking, “Where are we?”
“Simon isn’t just some random guy Maria,” Shakira clarified, her tone firm. Maria turned to her with a skeptical glare. “You fucking him?” she demanded bluntly. I remained silent in the backseat as Shakira shrugged nonchalantly. “Yeah, I’m fucking him. So what?” My eyes widened at her casual admission. Maria’s gaze snapped to mine, her brows knitting together as she studied me intently. “We need to go meet Rico,” she stated flatly to Shakira without breaking eye contact with me.
Maria steered us into a neighborhood and I couldn’t help thinking, what the fuck is this place? My eyes darted nervously over the scene as we drove deeper in. Shirtless thugs with bulging muscles occupied nearly every bench along the block, their hard gazes following our car like predators stalking prey.
Tattoos covered every inch of flesh - chests, arms, even faces. I let out an unsteady breath, regret coiling in my gut. Fuck, I should’ve bailed when I had the chance. Now I was being dragged right into whatever messed-up situation this was.
“Where are we?” Shakira asked, her voice tight. Maria glanced over, saying matter-of-factly, “This is my block. Rico lives further down.”
As we rolled to a stop in front of a dilapidated house, Maria swiveled toward us. “Stay put,” she ordered before exiting the vehicle and striding up to the door. Her knocks echoed through the tense silence. My voice trembled as I leaned forward. “Shakira?” She glanced back, replying quietly, “This ain’t exactly my scene either, Simon. No clue how this shit plays out.”
“What is it that you do in London?” Shakira asked, turning slightly in her seat. “I’m a computer programmer,” I explained, my voice barely above a whisper as I watched Maria disappear into the house.
We watched Maria return, signaling us out of the car with sharp gestures before personally opening our doors. She materialized beside me, her eyes raking over my appearance with a derisive tsk. Before I could react, her hands shot out, roughly yanking my shirt free from my trousers. With a violent tug, she tore open my front buttons; they scattered across the pavement like spilled teeth. Her fingers then attacked my sleeves, ruthlessly rolling them up while her other hand mussed my hair into disarray. I stood frozen in stunned submission as she manhandled me into some semblance of street credibility.
Shakira watched as Maria surveyed my appearance. “I guess it will do,” Maria muttered, adding sharply, “Now look like you own your woman and hold her.” As Shakira stepped close to me, I hesitantly reached for her hand. Maria rolled her eyes in disgust, then forcibly separated our hands and repositioned my arm behind Shakira, ensuring my palm rested firmly on her buttocks.
“Now follow me, and for fuck’s sake don’t say a word,” she commanded sharply as she motioned us forward with an impatient wave of her hand.
I glanced at Shakira, realizing she too was entering uncharted territory. Yet she drew clear reassurance from Maria’s lead, seemingly unfazed by my hand resting on her arse. And truth be told, I wasn’t about to complain.
