Summary

PALIMPSEST At 2:17 a.m., Mara receives a voice message from her dead brother. He has been dead for three days. The message is only nine seconds long. At first, Mara believes it must be a cruel mistake. Then she hears his voice again—this time from somewhere inside her home. What begins as one impossible message slowly turns into something far more disturbing. Voices appear where they shouldn't. Familiar things begin to feel wrong. Memories become unreliable. And the people Mara trusts most may not be who they seem. There is no explanation. No warning. Only a pattern that Mara has not yet learned to recognize. Because sometimes, the most terrifying thing in a room isn't what you can see. It's what has been there long enough for you to stop noticing. PALIMPSEST is a supernatural psychological horror novel about grief, perception, memory, and an unseen presence that refuses to remain where it belongs.

Chapter 1 - WRONG SIDE

At 2:17 a.m., Mara heard her brother whisper her name.

She was awake.

That was the first thing she would remember later.

Not the sound.

Not the message.

Not even the fear.

She would remember being completely, unquestionably awake.

The apartment was silent except for the refrigerator humming in the kitchen and the rain tapping against the bedroom window.

Mara lay on her back, staring at the ceiling.

She had been trying to sleep for almost an hour.

Her phone rested on the bedside table, screen down.

She had stopped checking the time because every time she did, fewer minutes seemed to have passed.

2:11.

2:13.

2:17.

Then—

“Mara.”

Her eyes opened.

She didn't move.

The voice had been quiet.

So quiet that for several seconds she wondered if she had imagined it.

“Mara.”

This time it came from the phone.

Her phone was still face down.

She reached for it.

The screen lit up.

1 NEW VOICE MESSAGE

No name.

No number.

Just a grey circle where the contact photograph should have been.

Mara frowned.

She picked up the phone.

The message had arrived at exactly 2:17 a.m.

Duration:

00:09

Nine seconds.

Her thumb hovered over the play button.

She almost deleted it.

Then she saw the timestamp.

And something inside her went cold.

The message had been sent from her brother's number.

Mara stopped breathing.

Her brother had been dead for three days.

She stared at the screen until the letters began to blur.

No.

There was another explanation.

There had to be.

Maybe the number had been reassigned.

Maybe someone had his old phone.

Maybe—

She pressed play.

Static.

For two seconds, there was nothing but soft electronic noise.

Then breathing.

Slow.

Uneven.

Very close to the microphone.

Mara leaned toward the phone.

The breathing stopped.

A voice whispered:

“Mara…”

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

It was Daniel.

It was her brother's voice.

Not similar.

Not almost identical.

His.

The exact voice she had heard thousands of times.

The voice that used to wake her when he stood outside her bedroom door.

The voice that had called her stupid when she forgot her keys.

The voice that had said I'll see you tomorrow three days before he died.

Mara replayed the message.

Static.

Breathing.

“Mara…”

She stopped it.

Her hands were shaking.

She looked toward the bedroom door.

It was closed.

She hadn't closed it.

She was certain of that.

She always slept with the door slightly open.

Always.

Mara sat up.

The room suddenly seemed much larger than it had a moment ago.

The darkness beyond the bed felt deep.

Not dark.

Deep.

She looked at the phone again.

There was one more thing.

Under the voice message, beneath the waveform, was a tiny line of text she hadn't noticed before.

Forwarded 1 time.

Mara stared at it.

Her brother had sent the message to someone else first.

Someone had forwarded it to her.

Who?

She opened the message details.

There was no forwarding number.

No sender history.

Nothing.

Only the original timestamp.

2:17 a.m.

Mara's thumb moved toward the screen.

Then her phone vibrated.

A second message.

Her stomach dropped.

1 NEW VOICE MESSAGE

This one was longer.

00:14

She didn't play it.

She couldn't.

Instead, she opened Daniel's contact.

His photograph was still there.

A stupid photograph.

He was squinting into sunlight, holding a paper cup of coffee and pretending to look annoyed.

Mara stared at his face.

Three days.

It had only been three days.

She pressed the call button.

The phone began ringing.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then the call connected.

Mara froze.

She heard nothing.

“Hello?”

Silence.

“Hello?”

Something breathed on the other end.

Mara's eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel?”

A faint sound answered her.

Not a word.

A scrape.

Like fingernails moving slowly across a hard surface.

Then—

“Mara.”

She covered her mouth.

The voice was no longer coming through the phone.

It was behind her.

She turned.

Nothing.

The bedroom door was still closed.

Her heart hammered against her ribs.

She looked back at the phone.

The call had ended.

Duration:

00:00

Mara sat perfectly still.

Then someone knocked on her bedroom door.

Three times.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

She couldn't breathe.

Another three knocks.

Slower this time.

Knock.

Knock.

Knock.

“Mara?”

Her mother's voice.

Mara almost cried with relief.

“Mom?”

“Yes.”

Her mother sounded frightened.

“What are you doing?”

Mara stood.

“Nothing.”

A pause.

Then her mother whispered through the door:

“Who were you talking to?”

Mara's face went numb.

She looked at her phone.

The call screen was still open.

Daniel's name was displayed.

Her mother knocked again.

“Mara?”

“Yes?”

“Open the door.”

Mara took one step forward.

Then another.

Her hand reached for the handle.

She stopped.

Something was wrong.

She didn't know what.

She simply knew.

She looked down.

There was a thin line of darkness beneath the door.

A shadow.

Someone was standing on the other side.

Mara whispered:

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

Her mother's voice came from behind the door.

At the exact same moment—

Mara's phone whispered:

“Mara.”

She looked down.

The second voice message had started playing by itself.

Static.

Breathing.

Then Daniel's voice.

But this time, he wasn't whispering her name.

He was whispering something else.

Something that made every muscle in Mara's body lock.

“Don't open the door.”

Mara stared at the bedroom door.

Her mother's voice came again.

“Mara, sweetheart.”

A pause.

Then:

“Open the door.”

Mara took a step backward.

The shadow beneath the door moved.

Not away.

Closer.

As if whoever stood outside had lowered themselves to the floor.

Mara's phone crackled.

Daniel's voice returned.

Barely audible.

Terrified.

“She's not your mother.”

The shadow beneath the door stopped moving.

Silence.

For several seconds, nothing happened.

Then the voice outside changed.

It was still her mother's voice.

But the warmth was gone.

“Mara.”

Another pause.

“Who told you to be afraid of me?”

Mara's phone screen went black.

The bedroom lights flickered once.

Twice.

And somewhere inside the apartment—

a fourth knock answered from the kitchen.

Knock.

Mara stared into the darkness.

The thing outside her bedroom door did not move.

The thing in the kitchen knocked again.

Knock.

Then a third time.

Knock.

Mara slowly realized something.

There had never been anyone at her bedroom door.

Because the shadow beneath it—

was on the wrong side...........
