Summary

Matthias Knox doesn't do people. He does survival. As an ex-gang heavy, he spent his twenties learning how to weaponize silence and navigate the brutal concrete slums. But no amount of street smarts could prepare him for the apocalypse's final boss: a twenty-year-old innocent named Yelena. She still thinks cell service is just "lagging," she uses a plastic broom to fight the undead, and her loud yellow raincoat makes her a neon beacon for every monster in a five-mile radius. Matthias wants nothing more than to drop her off and disappear, but Yelena's blissfully naive chaos keeps dragging him right back into danger. In a dead world, an angry 27-year-old killer and a sheltered 20-year-old girl must navigate the ruins-if they don't kill each other first.

Prologue: Apocalypse

*

The end of civilization didn't begin with a meteor, a nuclear strike, or an act of God.

It began in a climate-controlled underground laboratory in Geneva, funded by a desperate coalition of world governments. They called it Project Apex. The goal was simple, arrogant, and thoroughly human: to engineer the ultimate soldier. They wanted to create a human being who didn't require sleep, whose tissue could regenerate in seconds, and whose pain receptors could be turned off like a light switch.

They succeeded. And then, as always, they lost control. The Upex Serum worked beautifully on the first dozen test subjects. Their muscles grew denser, their cognitive processing speed tripled, and they became impervious to biological weapons. But the scientists failed to calculate the mutation rate of the synthetic delivery virus. Within three weeks, the virus evolved. It began to strip away the subjects' higher brain functions, leaving only the primal, predatory core.

Worse, it bypassed the respiratory system and began shedding through bodily fluids. A single bite transmitted the live, mutating virus into a new host's bloodstream within seconds. Patient Zero broke containment on a rainy Tuesday. By Thursday, Geneva was a graveyard. By the following Monday, international flights had carried the Project Apex mutation to every major capital city on the globe.

The collapse was immediate and absolute. The world's militaries, built to fight conventional wars against human adversaries, were utterly useless against an enemy that felt no pain, required no supply lines, and turned their own fallen soldiers into fresh recruits. Quarantine zones were established and overrun in a matter of hours. The electrical grids sputtered and died as power plants were abandoned. The internet went dark, satellite signals drifted, and the global supply chain evaporated overnight.

Major metropolitan areas became massive, concrete slaughterhouses. The air grew thick with the smell of burning plastic and rotting flesh, a permanent haze of grey ash settling over the skyscrapers like a funeral shroud. The world became a ghost town, populated only by the wandering, ravenous failures of human ambition.

Matthias Knox barely noticed the difference. To a twenty-seven-year-old who had spent his entire adult life navigating the cutthroat, bloody hierarchy of the city's most brutal street gangs, the apocalypse was just a shift in management. Before the outbreak, Matthias was an enforcer.

His job was to collect debts, silence informants, and survive the constant, unpredictable violence of the concrete slums. He had already seen humanity at its absolute worst long before the dead started walking. When the world fell apart, he didn't panic, weep, or pray. He simply took his tactical gear, packed a duffel bag with ammunition, sharpened his favorite hunting knife, and went dark.

The screech of tearing steel and the copper reek of fresh blood were Matthias Knox's formal introduction to the end of history.

It happened exactly five years ago, on a rainy Tuesday evening that was supposed to be just another payday. At twenty-two, Matthias was already a chief enforcer for the city's most ruthless syndicate. He didn't cut product on street corners or sweat low-level debtors; he handled the glitches. When a high-profile client decided they were too powerful to settle their tabs, Matthias was the shadow sent into the secure penthouse suites and private lounges to change their minds.

That night, his target was a crooked city councilman named Vance who had tried to skim millions from the syndicate's casino fronts. Matthias had cornered him in a dimly lit, underground parking garage downtown. He had the politician pinned ruthlessly against the hood of a sleek Mercedes, his black-gloved fingers wrapped tightly around the man's expensive silk tie, cutting off his air.

"The boss doesn't do payment extensions, counselor," Matthias had whispered, his voice entirely devoid of warmth or empathy.

Vance was gasping, his manicured hands clawing uselessly at Matthias's iron forearms. "You don't understand... there's something else happening out there... the riots at the hospital-"

A sharp hiss cut him off. At the far end of the concrete garage, the heavy elevator doors slid open.

It wasn't Vance's expected security detail. A woman in a torn business suit stumbled out into the fluorescent light. Her body was jerking with violent, unnatural spasms, her spine arching at angles that should have snapped her vertebrae. When she lifted her head, Matthias felt a rare spike of adrenaline. Her eyes were completely bloodshot-the capillaries literally ruptured from the staggering internal pressure of the mutating Project Apex virus.

She didn't stumble for long. The synthetic super-soldier serum raging through her bloodstream suddenly locked her muscles into overdrive. She locked eyes on Vance and sprinted. She covered fifty yards in less than three seconds, her limbs firing with a terrifying, mechanical velocity that audibly tore her own tendons.

Before Matthias could even unholster his weapon, the woman threw herself onto the Mercedes. She bypassed Matthias entirely, her teeth sinking into Vance's throat with a wet, sickening crunch.

That was the exact moment the old world fractured. The politician didn't bleed out and die. Within thirty seconds, Vance's entire body convulsed violently. His jaw snapped back into place with a horrific click, his blood-soaked eyes snapped open, and he stood up with the exact same ravenous, twitching fury as his attacker.

Panic was a luxury Matthias had trained out of his system years ago. As both infected lunged at him, he drew his custom, high-caliber tactical pistol. He fired twice into Vance's chest. The heavy rounds punched clean through the tailored suit, but the politician didn't even flinch. The super-soldier virus had effectively shut off his pain receptors.

"Target adjusted" Matthias instantly analyzed the failure. He shifted his weight, dropped low to avoid a frantic, clawing swipe from the woman, and tracked the erratic, bobbing motion of her head. He squeezed the trigger. The point-blank round shattered her skull, dropping her instantly to the oil-stained concrete.

Vance snarled, snapping his blood-dripping teeth inches from Matthias's face. Matthias didn't retreat. He stepped into the attack, delivering a brutal, bone-shattering front kick to the politician's ribs. The impact created just enough distance for Matthias to bring his firearm up and plant a flawless, heavy-caliber round directly between Vance's eyes.

As the building's fire alarms began to wail and distant screams echoed from the streets above, Matthias stood alone in the garage, looking at the bodies. The syndicate didn't matter anymore. The money didn't matter. The world was turning into a meat grinder, and he needed to move.

While the civilian population spent those critical early weeks crying in makeshift shelters and clogging the highway escape routes, Matthias went to war with the environment. He used his knowledge of the underworld to locate his syndicate's hidden, off-the-grid armory. He broke the vault doors down, stepping over the half-eaten remains of his former bosses to claim his true inheritance: tactical Kevlar vests, a suppressed military-grade pistol, crates of specialized ammunition, and a heavy-duty, high-carbon steel hunting knife.

He survived the initial purge through total, unblinking calculation. He watched a military checkpoint collapse because a soldier hesitated to pull the trigger on an infected loved one. Matthias never hesitated. He drew a hard line in the sand, and he put a bullet through absolutely anything that crossed it. To him, the infected weren't a tragedy; they were just targets that moved faster.

Now, five long years later, Matthias sat on the rusted hood of a jackknifed semi-truck on an abandoned elevated highway. The city below him was a tomb of shattered concrete and burnt-out skyscrapers, draped in a permanent shroud of grey ash.

He methodically ran a whetstone down the edge of his steel hunting knife. "Scrape. Scrape. Scrape." The rhythmic sound was the only proof of life in a five-mile radius. His face, deeply etched with the scars of street warfare and half a decade of isolated survival, was a flat mask of stone. He had a secure perimeter, a hidden camp overflowing with meticulously counted rations, and he hadn't spoken a single word to another human being in months.

For Matthias Knox, survival was a mathematical equation. The math only worked if the equation had a single variable: himself. He was perfectly content in the silence of the dead world.

He wiped the blade, completely unaware that a walking, breathing headache wrapped in a bright yellow raincoat was currently wandering into the alleyway directly beneath his perch, about to shatter his calculus forever.
