The Night The Ocean Listened.
The wind did not howl that night—it roared.
It tore through the village like something alive, rattling doors, bending trees, and carrying with it the sharp scent of salt and storm. The ocean had never been this loud. Never this angry.
Waves rose like towering walls, crashing violently against the shore as if they were trying to break free from something unseen.
"This isn't natural…" an elder whispered, gripping his staff as lightning split the sky.
The villagers had seen storms before.
But not like this.
Not one that felt like it was watching them.
At the edge of the village, closest to the raging sea, a small wooden home trembled beneath the force of the wind.
Inside, Elowen cried out.
Pain surged through her, sharp and relentless, but it was not the pain that frightened her.
It was the ocean.
She could feel it.
Not just hear it… not just see it…
She could feel it.
Like it was calling.
Like it was waiting.
"Stay with me, Elowen!" the midwife urged, her voice barely audible over the storm. "You're almost there!"
Another wave crashed—louder than the rest.
Closer.
Too close.
The walls creaked violently, and for a moment, Elowen thought the sea itself would come crashing through.
Then—
Everything changed.
The wind stopped.
Abruptly.
As if something had cut it off.
The waves stilled.
The thunder silenced.
Even the air seemed to freeze.
And in that impossible, unnatural quiet…
A cry was heard.
Soft.
New.
Alive.
The child had been born.
The midwife stared down at the baby in her hands, her breath caught in her throat.
For a moment, she said nothing.
She couldn't.
Because the water—
the water that had soaked through the wooden floor from the storm outside—
was moving.
Not away.
Not randomly.
But toward the child.
"Elowen…" the midwife whispered, her voice trembling. "Look."
Elowen, exhausted, turned her head weakly.
And then she saw it.
The thin layer of seawater creeping gently across the floor… curling… reaching…
Until it touched the baby's tiny foot.
The child stilled.
The crying stopped.
A small wave formed—no higher than a hand—rising just slightly… as if it were breathing.
Then it dipped.
Softly.
Gently.
Like a bow.
Tears filled Elowen's eyes.
Not of fear.
But of knowing.
"She has a name…" Elowen whispered, her voice barely there.
Outside, the ocean remained still.
Listening.
Waiting.
"Elowen," the midwife urged again, shaken. "What is her name?"
Elowen looked at her child.
At the way the water lingered, as if reluctant to leave her.
At the way the storm had vanished the moment she was born.
At the truth she had carried alone for so long.
"Elowen…" a voice echoed in her memory.
Deep.
Endless.
Like the sea itself.
Aetherion.
Her heart ached.
She held her child closer.
"Thalassa," she said softly.
The moment the name left her lips—
The ocean moved.
Not violently.
Not wildly.
But with purpose.
The tide rose just slightly, glimmering beneath the moonlight that now broke through the clouds.
And far beneath the surface…
Something stirred.
Watching.
Waiting.
The beginning had arrived.
