Chapter 1: Apple
"We're trapped, holy fucken shit we're trapped." I poke your arm. "Gezz, drama queen, calm down." You shoot me a look that says seriously. I look around, the door behind us is locked, there's probably no signal, and the only light comes from the flickering emergency exit sign. I look back at you with a raised eyebrow. "Still think I'm overreacting?" you ask. "Yep." I stand then, and walk in a slow circle. The light above the door is flickering. Red. Green. Red. Green. Red. I walk past it. Suddenly you're in front of me, waving your hand. “Hello? What are you looking at?!” The flickering of the light cast your face. Green. Red. Green. Red. I ignore you, stepping around you and walking further into the room. I pull out my phone as I walk - no service. I shove my phone back in my pocket, your footsteps echoing a moment after mine. I look back, you're not following, your pacing. I roll my eyes and keep walking further into the room.
I stop suddenly, your footsteps the only noise I can make out. You look up, stopping your frantic movement. “What?! What are you-” I cut you off with a raised hand, the other pressing a finger to my lips. You walked over then, as silently as you could, your shoulder brushing mine. I listened, my outstretched hand now mere millimeters from your mouth. I lowered my finger from my lips and after a minute that probably felt like an hour to you, I walked further into the room.
“J-a-w-s-f-s-w” you stutter before finally forming words. “What, the fuck, was that?!” I don't look back, I just continue walking, observing the white walls. “What was what?” You gesture wildly, “what was that?! You just stopping and shushing me like a child!” I shrug “It was me shushing you so I could hear.” You stare at me dumbfound, hands frozen mid gesture. “Hear what?!” I just shrug and keep walking. So I was right, you didn't hear it.
I walk deeper and deeper into the room, your voice echoing behind me. “Where are you going?!” I pause my saunter, finally turning to face you. “I'm going to look further.” With that and your confused expression, I walk further into the room.
I reach the far wall, your footsteps fast and frantic behind me. I stop, turning slowly and looking at the walls. You walk up and stop beside me, frantically kicking and hitting the walls. “You finished?” I asked in a dry tone. You whirl around, eyes wide. “No! We’re trapped and you're just standing there looking at the walls!” I shrug. “Because the one you're kicking is a different colour.” You freeze, leg raised mid-kick. “It's what?” “A different colour, that wall,” I say, pointing briefly to the one you were kicking. “Is a different colour to the other three.” You stare at the wall, then your head starts looking between walls, shoulders turning with them. “How can you tell, they look the same?!” I grab your shoulders gently, stopping their frantic movement. “The way the light was reflecting off of it at the start. The further you go into the room, the more yellow it becomes.” You look, eyes wide and frantic, but observing. “I don't see any change though!” I sigh, wrapping my hand gently around your forearm, pulling you carefully to the start of the room. “Look at the light when it flickers green on the wall.” We stand there for a few minutes, your breathing slowly evening out from its earlier distressed pace. “Now, walk slowly with me, and watch the wall.” I begin walking with that, my footsteps slow and steady, my eyes flicking from the wall to you every few seconds.
