A few things that happened while I was writing this one:

The otter was never supposed to steal anything. Sheila showed up trying to hide a bottle cap in one scene and by chapter three she had a documented criminal record. I did not plan that. She just does that.

Kevin the wood stork is based on real research into how genuinely unhinged wood storks look up close. I did not exaggerate. If anything I held back.

The sea lion barks like he’s personally offended by everything, which felt right for something built like a linebacker with flippers.

The ankle monitor started as one small detail and basically became a supporting character. It shows up more than some of the humans do.

And the key sculptures were the hardest thing to plan and the thing I’m proudest of. I didn’t want Jamie’s “bad habit” to just get apologized for and quietly dropped by the end. I wanted it to become the thing that saves her.

Anyway. The sea animals were supposed to be background texture. They elected themselves cast members and I let them.

Summary

Jamie Lynn Wells is starting over with an ankle monitor, a court order, and exactly one rule: don't screw this up. Enter the Regional Marine Rehab Center, home of a klepto sea otter, a sea lion with main character energy, and a wood stork named Kevin she is genuinely afraid of. Then there is Mark. The marine biologist who picked her up on a dirt road her very first day and never once looked at her like she was a mistake waiting to happen. Jamie is used to hiding the parts of herself nobody is supposed to see. Mark keeps finding them anyway, and somehow does not run. Funny, messy, and warmer than either of them expected. A story about rescue going both directions. Contains mature themes.
