Chapter 1 : The Apex Predators
Metropolis at night looked as though someone had spilled a pool of burning black ink across a merciless jungle of glass and stone.
Eighty stories above the asphalt, the floor-to-ceiling windows of Sterling Enterprises’ penthouse transformed the city’s deafening roar into a silent spectacle. Inside the vast office, only two sounds disturbed the stillness—the slow, solemn tick-tock of an antique pendulum clock... and the crisp clink of ice turning inside a crystal tumbler.
Tristan Sterling stood motionless before the window.
His midnight-blue three-piece suit hugged his lean, athletic frame with immaculate precision, as though a master sculptor had carved him from glass and sharpened him into a blade. His dark brown eyes were cold and calculating, possessing the merciless focus that made even Wall Street’s most ruthless financial sharks think twice before meeting his gaze.
He raised the crystal tumbler to his lips.
The smoky warmth of vintage single malt burned down his throat, but his expression remained untouched.
His attention was fixed on the view ahead.
Five hundred meters away.
A dark skeleton of steel and glass pierced the fog-shrouded sky.
Vance Global.
Its black obsidian tower rose over the city like an arrogant king, one foot planted upon the chest of the night. People said that whenever Sterling and Vance went head-to-head, the entire country’s stock market seemed to hold its breath.
The media had dubbed them the “Twin Titans.”
But to Tristan?
Hayden Vance was no titan.
He was poison.
A centuries-old thorn that could not be uprooted, an insidious presence that had stood in the way of Tristan’s every move, every acquisition, every victory—and somehow, every breath—for the past seven years.
Seven years.
For seven long years, their rivalry had become an addiction.
They had fought in boardrooms, where hundreds of millions changed hands as each tried to outmaneuver the other and seize control of their rival’s assets. They had clashed at private fundraisers and exclusive gatherings, where even the accidental brush of their shoulders could make the air between them ignite.
The world believed Tristan’s obsession was nothing more than corporate greed.
But the truth was far more dangerous.
Tristan was an ordinary mortal—a man made of flesh, bone, and blood. He had built his empire by sacrificing sleepless nights, years of his life, and every ounce of himself.
And the man standing across from him...
was not human.
To the world, Hayden Vance was an aloof, cold-blooded venture capitalist who despised cameras and avoided the spotlight.
But Tristan had sensed what lurked beneath that polished exterior.
Something dark.
Something ancient.
A suffocating, magnetic heat that seemed to drain the oxygen from a room the moment Hayden stepped inside. An instinctive, predatory presence that made even seasoned executives break into a cold sweat without understanding why.
Tristan set his tumbler down with deliberate force.
Clink.
The sharp sound of glass cut through the silence like a knife.
“Seven years, Vance,” Tristan murmured, a bitter smile curling at the corner of his mouth. “No matter how powerful a predator you are... I’ll still bring you to your knees.”
Two faint, trembling knocks sounded at the door.
“Enter.”
Tristan didn’t turn around.
The door opened, and Clara, his executive secretary, hurried inside with a thick leather folder clutched against her chest. Her breathing was uneven, and beads of sweat glistened along her forehead.
“Mr. Sterling... I’m terribly sorry to disturb you at this hour,” she said, placing the folder on the glass desk. “But the Northern Coastline acquisition... we’re losing it.”
Tristan turned sharply.
His brown eyes narrowed like a hawk’s.
“Losing it? I offered the local council three times the market value. Sterling has exclusive rights to develop a clean-energy facility on that cliffside property.”
“The council has put the agreement on hold, sir.” Clara hesitated before lowering her gaze. “Exactly twenty minutes ago... Vance Global submitted a counterproposal.”
The muscles in Tristan’s jaw tightened.
Heat surged through his veins.
“Hayden.”
He spat the name as though it were molten metal burning his tongue.
“What does Vance Global want with that barren cliffside? There’s no financial incentive there.”
“According to the council, Mr. Vance has offered them a sovereign grant covering the entire coastal grid.” Clara opened the folder with trembling fingers. “And, sir... the conditional contract documents have already been delivered to the private cottage on the cliff. Mr. Vance has been there for the past four hours.”
She swallowed.
“The council has made their position very clear. If Sterling Enterprises doesn’t countersign before midnight, the title will be permanently transferred to Vance Global.”
Tristan’s gaze shifted to the antique clock on the wall.
10:14 p.m.
Outside, the sky had begun to change.
The stars seemed to disappear one by one, as though an unseen hand were snuffing them out. The clouds were no longer merely dark. A smoky crimson glow had begun to bleed across the heavens, staining the night with an ominous, almost bloody hue.
The Blood Eclipse.
The greatest solar eclipse of the century would reach its peak at midnight.
For the past month, scientists and media outlets had been consumed by the approaching celestial event.
But Tristan cared nothing for the eclipse.
He cared about the land.
And the man standing on it.
Hayden Vance.
“Have the car brought around, Clara.”
His voice was as cold as ice.
He picked up his midnight-blue coat from the back of the chair.
“Sir? Now?” Clara’s eyes widened. “The weather is deteriorating. There’s already a highway closure warning, and the cottage is nearly an hour and a half from Metropolis. It’s completely isolated, perched on a cliff directly above the sea—”
“I said, have the car brought around.”
Tristan cut her off without raising his voice.
Yet the authority in it was absolute.
“I’m not going to sit here while Vance steals another one of my deals. If he wants to take what belongs to me...”
He slipped into his coat.
“...then he can look me in the eyes while he does it.”
Tristan picked up the titanium pocketknife from his desk and slid it into his pocket. Then he closed his fingers around his car keys.
Just before leaving, he glanced one last time toward the black monolith across the city.
And suddenly—
a strange, piercing sensation struck deep within his chest.
For one inexplicable moment, it felt as though an ancient fire was calling to him from somewhere beyond the darkness.
A majestic, infernal fire that seemed destined to melt away everything mortal within him.
Tristan dismissed the sensation.
Fear had never been enough to make Tristan Sterling retreat.
Not even the fear of death.
Without another glance behind him, he opened the heavy mahogany door of the penthouse and strode into the corridor.
He had no idea that tonight, his fate was about to change forever.
Nor did he know that his body, his bloodline, and the generations that would come after him were about to be swept into a storm far more terrifying than anything he could possibly imagine.
