Summary

Set in 1947, the time when everything began to fall apart for Punjab. It was seen as a year of hope and new beginnings until the partition of India; amid it began the story of two young hearts who found something they didn't even know they were looking for. Kartaar Singh was a young man with dreams that had nothing to do with the political state of his home country. Yasmin Shah was the daughter of a middle-class shopkeeper raised to understand the world through her own family, faith and the quiet expectations placed on her by her father. They were never supposed to cross paths, but fate decided to play its game. There is no way of coming out of the ordeal unscathed. Kartaar kept finding reasons to visit the shop, and Yasmin, against what she told herself, began waiting for him to show up. However, outside their little world, the country began changing. Rumours became whispers and whispers became fear. Neighbors beginning to choose sides, and faith, which used to be simply a part of who they were, became a line the world insisted they could not cross. As the country moves toward the partition, Kartaar and Yasmin find themselves caught between the lives they have always known and the future they desperately want.

AS: The writing here is clean, polished, and flows so naturally that it was a real pleasure to read.Isla is a great protagonist. Her self-deprecating humor made her feel real (the squirrel's tail and the upside-down trees in the epilogue had me laughing), and her skills as a healer and her growth into h...
