Prologue: The Cage We Choose
The rain in London didn’t just fall; it stained. It washed over the cold stone of the Blackwood estate, slicking the cobblestones like oil. Inside, the only sound was the haunting, erratic weeping of a violin.
Elena Vance didn’t look at the man watching her from the shadow of the velvet drapes. She didn’t need to. She could feel Julian’s gaze like a physical weight, tracing the curve of her spine, the frantic pulse in her throat, the rhythmic movement of her bow.
“You’re playing sharp, mia cara,” Julian’s voice cut through the candlelit dimness. It was smooth, dark, and utterly devoid of mercy.
Elena stopped, her bow hovering an inch above the strings. Her knuckles were white. “I am tired, Julian. Please.”
He stepped into the light. Impeccably tailored, strikingly handsome, and thoroughly lethal. He closed the distance between them, his footsteps silent on the Persian rug. He caught her chin between his fingers, his touch a terrifying contrast of absolute gentleness and absolute power.
“You belong in the light, Elena,” he murmured, his thumb brushing her lower lip. “But you are mine. And the dark is where I keep my prettiest things.”
She should have hated him. She had every reason to. He had bought her family’s ruin, trapped her in a golden cage, and stripped away her choices one by one. But as his dark eyes locked onto hers, Elena felt the terrifying truth echo in her chest: the cage was locked, but she no longer wanted the key.
