Summary

When the queen sacrifices her life for her kingdom, her daughter is felt to save her from her own cage, and learns what lays beyond the border. "What lies beyond the border?" i had always asked, but my mother, and every other adult, would tell me, 'nothing at all' but i knew they were lying. why would there be a border cutting us off from ever getting off this island. i heard stories. When i was little. 'The border was built to protect us! do not look at it as something trapping us. it's saving us.' and all the other children believed it. They believed every lie... "Why cant we communicate with humans?" i had wondered, and that was when i found out the horrible truth....the world above water was a cruel and deadly world... and that island that we so dearly 'protect'.....was one of the worst.

The War

“My Love, what shall we do?” “You, hide. I can’t risk losing you and the baby.” “But-” “I said hide! There should be at least someone to rule the people in my absence.” The king swam out of the room, shutting the door behind him, appointing two guards to watch over the door.

Miranda sat there on the bed, rubbing the bump in her belly. She had learned to breathe underwater with a special ruby that hung from her neck, and was already an excellent swimmer. How had she fallen in love with a merman? The king at that? She could hardly remember when it even happened, but she didn’t care. But the others did..... for her mother had betrayed her horribly when she thought her daughter was under a spell, though she had not been. Her mother told the village when she had left one night acting strangely. And to add it up, she was thicker than normal, for her belly was swelling along with the baby inside it. They followed her and found out what she had been really doing, then plotted to kill the merman to brake the make believe spell.

At first.....King Jupiter didn’t believe her, as she said she didn’t know anything about it, but then he saw the humans hold her down as she screamed for him, he rushed in to help her, but could only get as far as the water could take him. He used his trident to flood half the bay, and gave the woman a necklace which allowed her to breathe underwater.

It took months for the humans to find her......and here they were.........while she was expecting a delivery for her child any day now.

Kate, one of the royal’s most loyal maids, burst into the room, the waves spreading and hitting Miranda softly. “My Queen! We have to take you and the baby to a safer place!” “If Jupiter said he’ll protect me, I believe in hi-” Miranda yelled out in pain, holding her belly. “Oh no.....” she was going to have this baby now....so unprepared. “K-Kate!” She said, clutching her belly, breathing heavily. “Oh god! Oh god! Come with me!” Kate said, pushing open one of the huge window in the bedroom. She held on to Miranda’s hand and swam fast, pulling her queen along. Miranda was so glad for the tail, because there was no way she could have been able to move so fast with human legs.

They reached a small cave, not too far from the castle, where Kate lived. From there, you could see chaos....there were bodies of both human and sea creatures in the castles court yard....it was horrible. Miranda had grown to love and care for everything in the sea, scary or not, since she was little. The sea had always been her escape from reality, and it was being destroyed by the very people who raised her on the small island. They had crafted underwater armour that was filled with oxygen so they could come down to fight.

Kate had pushed her into a small room and called Hugo, her husband, (who was coincidentally a doctor) to deliver the baby, and an hour later, She was born......

By then many lives were lost. Miranda, not tired in the least, rushed off after entrusting her little mermaid child too Kate and Hugo to care for until she returned. But she never did.

She had swam in the middle of her brother and husband before any of them could harm each other and said: “For what you have done to my kingdom, you have been cursed. Though I came from the island, you have made me hate it. Leave this place and never come back and accept your faith.”

Her body glowed a bit and so did the trident, then she fell to her knees.

“Miranda!” Her brother and Jupiter shouted. she looked at her feet with emotionless eyes, them folded under her, turning to stone. ” Goodbye brother, you all shall never return here, for you can never go Beyond the border again.” she stretched her hand out to the merman she called her husband. “Take good care of Jade.” were her last words. She was completely covered in stone now, her hand reaching out, touching Jupiter’s cheek. The trident shot a beam in the air and all the humans swam away, back to their island. Miranda’s brother, Joel, hesitated, looking at his stone little sister and the depressed king of mermaids and thought... This is all our fault...
