Rich People Are Wicked: A Review
"Quick PSA before the actual review: if my “chapters read” count looks unhinged, blame the auto-scroller. It’s not me bingeing like a possessed gremlin, it’s the app doing crimes in the background. Anyway. Moving on. Walking into this story, I was hooked from the start. The writing has this deliberate play with shadows and quiet tension, where you can tell something is happening beneath the surface long before anyone says it out loud. It feels calm at first, then the ending shows up like, “Hi, I’m here to ruin your day.” I love Cole Hartman. I wish he was real. I'm simping with full sincerity and zero shame. He’s one of my top AG characters because he’s complex, unpredictable, and impossible to fully “read.” I didn’t trust him most of the time, even while loving him. Everyone in this story is side-eyeing everyone, including themselves, and it makes every scene feel loaded. Dakota is also a character I didn’t trust, and once Cole started trusting him, my trust issues actually got worse. Their dynamic feels like they’re both holding knives behind their backs while still somehow serving insane chemistry. When they’re together, it’s giving power couple, but in a “we might destroy each other and the building” way. The dialogue between them is hot, sincere, and stressful. You never fully know where you stand, and I loved that the story doesn’t spoon-feed you the truth. Even with the narration explaining what might actually be going on, but it makes you doubt the narrative on purpose, then later everything clicks and you’re just sitting there like... okay, fine. You got me. I usually don’t even care for explicit scenes, but these were... so good and written so well they felt criminal. The tension builds properly, so when it happens it fits. Also their first kiss? Elite. Historic. I will be thinking about it at random times like it’s a personal problem. AG does this thing where the city feels like a character, and Ravenport absolutely is one. Through the weather, scents, and atmosphere, you can picture it like a person with a mood and a personality. The setting adds to the story instead of just hosting it. I loved the symbolism, especially Themis in the piazza and the peach motif. It felt meaningful. Also the Saltmere connection made me so happy, I remember it from the Wattpad days and it deserves to be published. Seeing the Easter egg in Encore was such a good payoff, and I was so happy to know more about it from earlier, a little drag-path moment right there. One of my favorite things is how the truth is handled. There are things happening in the background and you feel them, but you don’t fully know them. Most (and I mean almost all) of the characters don’t either. So when it all comes out, it hits with that exact shock of realizing everyone, including the reader, is finding out at the same time. It’s satisfying, brutal, and weirdly intimate, like we all got dragged into the same revelation together. Overall, this story is beautiful, unsettling, smart, and... brutal. The ending is a whiplash, and I mean that as a compliment. It shows that violence doesn't always have to be physical. And yeah, rich people are wicked. Thank you for another wonderful story!!"
