In a Toxic Relationship

“Will you be my girlfriend Serena Rogers?”

“Yes, I will Hal, I will.”

That was it, the biggest mistake of my life. Since that day my life was going to get worse. I thought being in love was the best feeling in the world.

Oh! How wrong was I? If this is how being in love feels, then I would like to remain single.

I sighed as I peered out of the balcony in my room. By the grace of God, my boyfriend gave me the OK to spend the night at my family’s mansion while he was away on a business trip.

Normally, as his devoted lover, I should be missing him, but I’m relieved that he’s gone since it means that I can breathe normally without needing to ask his permission.

Being the sister of a millionaire, one would assume that my life is perfect. If only they knew that my life is anything but perfect. We are what everyone refers to as “high school sweethearts,” Hal and I.

In the early years of our relationship, everything seemed ideal, but when we reached the fourth year, things started to go downhill. Hal changed.

My once-loving lover developed into one who was too demanding and in charge. Despite my repeated warnings that there was a difference between being caring and being in control, he continued to behave in this manner.

Hal disliked my friends, despite the fact that I was popular among them. He limited my options in every way. I even stopped studying. I lost touch with practically all of my close friends.

Simply put, in order to be his dream girlfriend, I entirely transformed who I was. Because I loved him, or at least I believed I did until he began blaming me for everything and progressively revealed his true nature to me over the years.

He constantly yearned for my attention until, gladly, he became more busy at work. He remained unchanged even then. Even the fact that I spend time with my family infuriates him.

By doing that, I am, in his view, avoiding him.

I don’t even have the word “personal space” in my dictionary.

I thought about my present situation and let a single tear slip from my eyes.

I decided to move in with my closest friend Taylor after she accepted a job offer in a different place for a period of time. My boyfriend and I had a lot of disputes until I finally persuaded him to let me stay with her.

However, the very following day, he called to tell me that he was moving to the same city and that he preferred that I stay with him rather than my best friend.

He did it because he lacks trust, not because he loved me or was going to miss me.

No matter how much I changed myself to become the ideal girlfriend for him, it was never sufficient. He would still have his doubts.

Hal fears that if he leaves me alone, despite the fact that I have been faithful to him for years, I would cheat on him.

He claimed that he couldn’t help but be suspicious of me because an attractive girl like me could slip at any time.

He claims that because of my mother’s Asian roots, I am too charming and could draw in any man with my good features. Every time I made an attempt to end our connection, he would harm himself or become severely intoxicated.

He even once came to my house in the middle of the night to beg me to take him back because he said he loved me very much. Because of this, he has been able to keep me bound to him for all these years, and soon we will be married by law.

“You are lucky to have a man who loves you so much.”

Hal Wilson was a favorite of my mother’s. If only she had known that being possessive and partner-insecure weren’t signs of true love.

She never listened to me when I tried to tell her about his true face; instead, she would brush me off by saying that I was lucky to have a lovely partner who was so devoted to me.

Whenever I informed her I wasn’t pleased in the relationship, she never offered me any support.

She would argue that I was acting immaturely and that it was difficult to find a man like Hal in the modern world.

‘I guess she is right.’

My phone began to ring, and as I wiped away my tears, I thought. I picked up his phone while rolling my eyes.

“Hello”

“Hi baby”

“Hmmm?”

“What are you doing?”

“I am doing nothing.”

“You were active on social media an hour ago. What were you doing?”

I sighed hearing him. There he goes again.

“Nothing, Hal I was only browsing the news feed. Why do you ask?”

“Were you chatting with another guy? Are you cheating on me?”

“Gosh! No Hal, why don’t you trust me? I wasn’t talking to anyone.”

“In that case, why not disable your accounts or give me the passwords so I may check them personally. Either option is possible.”

“Hal, stop this. You don’t trust me for no reason, so I won’t provide you the passwords to any of my accounts or deactivate any of them. Leaving is an option if you don’t believe in me. How many times do I must point out to you the importance of trust in a healthy relationship?”

“I knew it. You just want us to break up, don’t you? Do you like someone else now?”

“Hal, you know I’ve always been faithful to you. Oh my God (sighs). Why do you still disbelieve me? Please mature.”

“Prove it”

“What?”

“Prove it that you love me by deactivating all your social media accounts right now.”

“Are you crazy? You know what you can fuck off.”

I then ended his call and threw my phone on the bed. He called me once more, probably to quarrel, but I disconnected the line.

Author’s P.O.V

Serena’s eyes began to well up with dejected tears. She detested it. She detested the fact that her own lover constantly cast doubt on her character. Even the conversations she has with her male friends have come to a halt in an effort to please him.

She was unable to even break away from Hal because their families got along well. Serena is loved by Hal’s parents, who are eager for them to wed.

Every time she tells him that she can’t keep going in this relationship, he threatens to kill himself if she breaks up with him.

She was at the moment in her hometown in England. As he had to travel to another city for work, Hal dropped her off this morning.

Serena begged him to let her stay with Taylor, but he refused since he doesn’t believe she was who she says she was.

Despite the fact that Serena adores her father, she didn’t grow up with him being particularly close.

She had a close relationship with her mother, but she never got her mother to listen to her talk about her relationship with her boyfriend or how her older brother Nathanial Rogers was always too busy growing his business to spend time with his younger sister.

She sobbed while sitting on the floor, holding her knees close to her chest. She suffered severe trauma as a result of this connection.

She was trapped, and her wedding was only a few months away. She desired freedom. She yearned for independence.
