Chapter 1

EDIT STILL IN PROGRESS!!

💎💎💎💎

Goddamn! She was even lovelier in person. She looked like a woman who'd just been well screwed. Her pale, blonde hair was in artful disarray, her light green eyes slumberous and sexy, and that mouth!! Pink and pouty like she'd just been kissed. Not just any ol’ kiss too. A dirty, wet French kiss. His loins stretched pleasurably.

Reed Bordeaux slowly sipped from his glass of expensive, old scotch. The brown liquid moved down his throat. Heat trailed behind in its path. Much like the lust that flowed in his veins at his first sight of Dallas Rousseau, famed model, turned socialite.

He frowned. Hard. This wasn't good. Not in the least. He couldn't stand her type, superficial social bunnies who thrived on attention. Male attention to be exact and here he was, in the back of his mind already thinking of ways to get his hands on her. And fast!

She sashayed into the room like she owned the place. She had on a strapless, dark green dress. A short little thing that showcased her long legs. All eyes turned to her. Women looked on, some with jealousy bordering on outright envy and resentment. Men with obvious lust, much like his own, stared at her like a pack of hungry wild dogs watching a gazelle.

He looked on in distaste as she leisurely surveyed the surroundings. She looked bored, her gaze never remaining on anyone or anything for too long, as if she wished she were someplace else doing something better with her time.

The soft, smooth jazz that played in the background marked the evening's elegance and class. They were at a celebration ball at the Four Seasons. The Mayor's celebration ball that is. Tom Sutherland was celebrating his most accomplished achievements in the past year since his election and this party had the city's most important, most influential people. Senators, congressmen, affluent businessmen, politicians, you name it. Every last one of them dressed to the nines, drinking some of the most ridiculously overpriced champagne he’d ever come across.

But Reed's focus never left the woman. He watched as her gaze finally landed on him. Their eyes locked and his lust skyrocketed. The boredom in those bedroom eyes instantly vanished and was replaced with unconscious, immediate, feminine interest.

What was supposed to be fleeting eye contact between strangers turned into something else. A very strong something, judging by the increasing tightness in his pants. Catching herself staring, she immediately looked away.

Damn! He knew when a woman wanted him and this woman was no exception. Reed took another sip and weighed his opinions. He could screw her. Just once. Maybe twice, at the most. And be done with it.

Of course, he’d have to make sure no one ever found out because it would spell disaster for him. A Republican Senatorial candidate linked with a woman famous for her nude ads on TV screens and magazine pages would be the end of his political career.

Or he could simply ignore the whole situation and pretend he’d never laid eyes on her. That was a better option. Definitely. He couldn't afford to do anything that would jeopardize his campaign, especially so close to the elections.

“Look at those legs!" His friend, Lance Brennan uttered. "I bet you she's got nothing on underneath that flimsy excuse of a dress.”

Reed let out a low grumble. The thought of Dallas Rousseau naked under that dress made his throat dry. Lance was probably right too. The model was known for going around with no panties on. Reed remembered her laughing face as she'd admitted on national television that she indeed usually didn't bother with such unnecessary things as undergarments.

“Is that really true or are you just messing with everybody?” The flustered and shocked interviewer had asked.

She'd smiled that, wouldn't you like to know smile of hers. "Would you like to check and see for yourself?"

The unfortunate fool’s eyes had nearly bulged right out of his skull. “I ... I ... uh no. I mean .. eh ... " He’d stammered pathetically.

Dallas had laughed her famous throaty laugh and laid a delicate hand on the man's knee, "I'm only kidding Joe."

Joe had laughed nervously and discreetly loosened his collar. Sweat popped on his brow. He clumsily wiped it away with the back of his hand. “That was a good one.”

She had winked and said, "Of course, we couldn't do that in front of all your viewers but after the interview ..."

She'd shrugged and let Joe make of that what he liked.

Goddamn her! She was a tease, alright. Loathing moved within him mixing with the still simmering lust. She knew she was extremely beautiful and sexy without trying. Enticing men must be a game to her. She obviously had a lot of mileage on it too, no doubt. He knew women like her. He really didn't need the aggravation.

He needed a smoke. Badly. He'd quit years ago but the urge rose within him something fierce. No! No cigarettes. He couldn’t risk it. It’d taken him a long time to quit. What he needed was a distraction. He scanned the room again.

Ah! There was Senator Buckley and his wife. Reed admired few men, Earl Buckley was one of them. Born to a wealthy Texas family, with a long history of Senators, he’d married into one of the most prominent families in the state. The merger had created a strong powerhouse that few in the South could rival. No scandal, not even a hint had ever been attached to his name.

He muttered a quick see you later to Lance. And looked again at Dallas who was now on the dance floor, in the arms of a blonde, debonair-looking schmuck. Reed looked away just as she laughed at what her partner was saying. He made his way toward the Buckleys, greeting a few associates along the way.

When Regina spotted him she smiled warmly, “Reed. How wonderful to see you.”

He reached her and kissed her cheek, “You look stunning.”

In a classy purple and gold dress, she looked like the queen of England. Her dark hair was slicked back and her blue eyes twinkled with happiness.

Despite being nearly old enough to be his mother she still blushed and patted his arm. “Thank you.”

He smiled down at her then reached out and shook Earl’s hand.

The Senator was a tall, distinguished man with black slightly graying hair, sharp brown eyes and a razor-sharp wit.

“Good to see you, Reed. I hear your campaign is leaving Davis and his team behind eating dust.”

Reed chuckled. “Lots of it.”

They joined in the laughter. He’d always enjoyed being in their company. Earl had been, still was, his mentor for years. Earl and his family had sort of taken him in since Reed’s Harvard days back when Earl was one of his law professors.

He had played a vital role in helping Reed start his career in politics. Earl’s endorsement and public support had definitely propelled Reed high up the ranks pretty quickly, making him one of the youngest candidates to campaign for Senate in the great state of Texas.

“Anne was asking after you. You know how fond of you she is.” Regina said after the laughter had died down.

Reed hid a smile. For years now Regina had been trying to set him up with their daughter. The girl was pretty, beautiful even and Reed had known for a while that she had a crush on him.

She could barely look him in the eye and she was always blushing in his presence. It was even possible that it was more than a crush. She seemed to believe herself in love with him. He’d never once led her on or given any hint that he was interested in her. She was sweet, with big doe eyes and dark hair like her mother. But Reed had always regarded her as a little sister and that was unlikely to change.

“Why isn’t she here? She usually likes these events.”

“She wanted to especially after she heard you’d be here but her friend Ashley, you know that dreadful one with the hippy dreadlocks, had a birthday party of some sort.” Regina finished, her eyes wide with disapproval.

Reed chuckled, he knew the friend she was referring to. Busty Ashley, as far removed from sophistication as the land was to the sea. You were likely to find her in torn dirty jeans, her freckled face and blonde locks covered in grease, tinkering with her motorcycle rather than hosting luncheons and going to charity events. According to Regina, Ashely was not good company for a Senator’s daughter to associate with.

Before he could respond he watched as Dallas Rousseau approached them. And if he hadn’t been standing so close to the Senator he wouldn’t have noticed him immediately tense and his eyes momentarily flash with evident panic.

Strange!

“Senator Buckley, how lovely to see you again,” she said and smiled as she reached out her hand.

Her voice was like a soft purr. Her smile was open and inviting and Reed couldn’t look away. God, she looked like a sexy, wet dream. He’d always thought she had a great voice but up close and personal ... damn! It was smooth and warm like pure, wild honey.

“Miss Rousseau,” Earl said tightly and shook her hand briefly.

“Dallas, please,” the model said and her smile widened.

She extended her slim, perfectly manicured hand to Regina. “This must be your wife. It’s a pleasure, Mrs Buckley.”

They shook hands. “The pleasure is all mine Dallas. Oh, you don’t mind if I also call you Dallas, do you? It’s such an unusual name, especially for a girl.” Regina said politely as she smiled back.

“I don’t mind at all.” Her eyes twinkled with mischief. “My mother named me after the city my father was born and raised in,” she said proudly.

“Oh, how positively romantic.” Regina gushed.

Dallas laughed and the sound moved through Reed more potent than the scotch in his hands, “That’s mom, a hopeless romantic.”

She then turned to Earl, “You’re from Dallas too aren’t you Senator?”

Reed watched Earl shift uncomfortably. His hand, the one holding the glass of champagne was deathly pale, the knuckles tightly gripping the glass that it was a wonder it didn’t shatter.

“Yes, I am.”

“I thought so,” Dallas replied, her tone now odd as was the way she was looking at Earl.

But before she could say anything further a young, attractive black woman reached for her and whispered something in her ear.

“I’ll be right there,” Dallas said to the woman then turned back to them. “Have a delightful evening Senator and Mrs. Buckley it was wonderful meeting you,” she said and quickly walked away with the woman following closely at her heels. All without ever once looking at him.

Reed glanced at Earl and saw pure relief wash over his face and the uncharacteristic tension that had gripped him during the entire bizarre conversation leave his body.

When he realized Reed was watching him he immediately schooled his features and drank from his glass.

Just what the hell was going on here!!
