Chapter 1

### The Silent Night In the heart of a bustling city, where the neon lights bathed the streets in a kaleidoscope of colors, Thanh and Mai worked as a formidable duo in the city's most elite crime investigation unit. Thanh, a seasoned detective with years of experience, was known for his sharp mind and unwavering determination. Mai, on the other hand, was a rookie but had an innate talent for reading people and uncovering hidden truths. Their latest case was unlike any other. A series of unexplained disappearances had occurred in a quiet neighborhood, a place where crime was rare, and everyone knew each other. The victims seemed to vanish into thin air, leaving no trace behind—no signs of struggle, no fingerprints, nothing. The only thing connecting them was that they were all last seen on the same street, on the same night, every week. The latest victim was a young woman named Linh. She was last seen entering her apartment late at night, but she never emerged. Her neighbors didn’t hear anything unusual, no screams, no sounds of a struggle. It was as if she simply ceased to exist. Thanh and Mai arrived at the scene the next morning. Thanh immediately noticed something strange about Linh's apartment. It was meticulously clean, almost unnaturally so. “It’s like no one lived here,” Mai whispered as she scanned the room. The only personal item left was a single photograph of Linh, smiling brightly, pinned to the refrigerator. They started questioning the neighbors, but everyone seemed to have the same story. Linh was quiet, kept to herself, and had no enemies. However, one elderly woman who lived across the hall mentioned something that caught Thanh's attention. “I heard footsteps, late at night. They were soft, but I’m sure I heard them,” she said, her voice trembling. Thanh and Mai decided to review the security footage from the street cameras. As they played back the tape from the night Linh disappeared, they saw her entering the building, but then something unexpected happened. The camera feed cut out for precisely 10 minutes, and when it resumed, there was no sign of Linh. “Whoever did this knows exactly what they’re doing,” Thanh said, his brows furrowed. “They planned everything down to the last detail.” Mai nodded in agreement. “This isn’t just a random abduction. There’s something more sinister at play here.” The two detectives continued to dig deeper, uncovering a disturbing pattern. Each victim had received a mysterious letter a week before they disappeared, inviting them to a “private gathering” at an unknown location. The letters were always handwritten and signed with a single initial—“T.” The investigation took a dark turn when Mai found a connection between the victims. All of them had attended the same university as Thanh, years ago. As they delved into Thanh’s past, they discovered something shocking—Thanh had been part of an elite, secret society during his university days, known only to its members as “The Circle.” The society was known for its extreme initiation rituals and its obsession with loyalty and secrecy. Those who betrayed “The Circle” faced dire consequences. Thanh had left the group many years ago, but it seemed the past had come back to haunt him. Mai confronted Thanh, her voice shaking. “Why didn’t you tell me? Why did you keep this from me?” Thanh’s face was ashen as he replied, “I thought it was over. I thought I could escape it. But it looks like ‘The Circle’ never forgets.” Realizing that he was the next target, Thanh knew he had to end this once and for all. With Mai by his side, they devised a plan to draw out the mastermind behind the disappearances—a former member of “The Circle” who had become obsessed with revenge. The final showdown took place in an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city, where the truth was finally revealed. The mastermind was someone Thanh had once considered a friend, someone who had been consumed by jealousy and anger after Thanh left “The Circle.” In a tense confrontation, Thanh and Mai managed to apprehend the culprit, but not before uncovering the dark secrets of “The Circle” and the extent to which it had manipulated its members. As the sun rose over the city, Thanh and Mai stood together, knowing that although they had brought the criminal to justice, the scars of the past would remain. The case was closed, but the echoes of that silent night would stay with them forever.
