Espinas y escombros
CHAPTER 1 REVIEW
"Plot Clarity & Pacing The Hook: The opening scene is visceral and effective. Starting with the aftermath of a violent event (the blood, the "wet paint" sensation) creates immediate questions that kept me reading to find out how Lexi got there. The Transition: Moving from a high-tension scene to a slow, domestic bedroom scene is a "pacing whiplash." While it establishes the "Three weeks before" context clearly, the middle section feels a bit heavy on exposition (backstory dump). Lexi spends a lot of time thinking about the Bratva, her mother, and her plan in a way that feels like she's catching the reader up rather than living her life. Information Flow: The complexity of the relationships (the "Petrov men," the "husband-boyfriend" contract, Domani De Luca) is clear, but I found the "husband-boyfriend" label slightly confusing at first is it a fake marriage or a real one? The dialogue later clarifies their emotional bond, but the logistics of their "contract" could be clarified more naturally later. Character Development & Relatability Lexi: She comes across as a woman fueled by a singular, cold purpose. Her internal conflict, loving Anthony but keeping secrets with Domani, makes her multi-dimensional. However, her inner monologue about her "Oscar-winning performance" makes her feel very detached. It’s hard to "feel" her grief when she describes it so clinically. Anthony: He is the classic "protective but gentle" partner. His desire for her to take his name feels like a grounded, relatable want in a world of mafia deals. It makes him feel human rather than just a "muscle" character. The Antagonists: The Petrov family feels like a looming, dark shadow. The fact that Lexi is actively "using" Andrei adds a layer of ruthlessness to her character that makes her stand out from a typical "damsel" trope. Emotional Engagement The "Vero/Rizzo" Moment: This was the emotional highlight of the chapter. Anthony’s explanation of why the name matters to him, wanting a "united front" rather than a "falsified passport", felt earned and sincere. It’s the first time the reader sees the vulnerability behind their "contract." Lust vs. Love: The chemistry between Lexi and Anthony is high-heat and believable. However, because the scene is preceded by Lexi thinking about "revenge settling into every molecule," the transition into the sexual encounter felt a bit sudden. It’s hard to pivot from "my family murdered my mother" to "he’s the sexiest man alive" without a bit more emotional transition. Structural Integrity The "Flash-Forward" Device: This is a strong structural choice. It frames the bedroom scene with a sense of dread, we know this domestic peace is going to end in blood. Internal Monologue vs. Dialogue: The chapter is very heavy on Lexi’s internal thoughts. About 40% of the text is Lexi explaining the plot to herself. The chapter gains much more life and "structural weight" once Anthony speaks. The dialogue-heavy second half flows much better than the summary-heavy first half. Strengths & Weak Areas Strengths: Sensory Writing: The description of the blood feeling like wet paint and the "peaches and cream" flushing are very vivid. The "Us" Dynamic: You’ve successfully created a "ride or die" feeling between the leads, despite the secrets Lexi is keeping. Weak Areas: The Backstory Dump: A lot of the "Bratva business deal bride" and "Vitaly orchestrated the murder" info is delivered in a single block of thoughts. As a reader, I’d love to see this revealed through a conversation or a tense moment with Andrei rather than a summary. Plot Hole/Logic: Lexi mentions she is a "bride" and they are "moving in after the wedding," yet Anthony is still asking her when she will "legally" change her name. If the marriage was a contract for a business deal, I was confused why the legal name change hadn't happened as part of the paperwork, or why Anthony (as a Rizzo) cares about the legalities of a "temporary" contract. Great work so far! If you ever want deeper, detailed feedback on your manuscript, you can find my contact info through the email icon on my profile."
