Decent short story, hits the right notes for the most part. Minor plotholes.
" This is a decent short story about a female main character, FMC, who flee's an abusive relationship to attend University in England and quickly discovers the supernatural world. With her best friend in tow and gaining the attention of a pack, pun intended, of guys with superiority complexes and far too much control over the environment, she discovers secrets about herself that shock her and slowly unravel to form a more complete picture. Once she discovers the supernatural world around her the hits just keep coming, almost too fast for the most part but that can be explained due to the length of the novel. I don't say this often but this book would have been better served if it was another 10-15 chapters long. The timing on some things is just too short. She flee's her abusive boyfriend and goes to another country but gets found far too quickly. They start receiving cryptic notes, but you don't learn about that from them...it comes from the Werewolf pack, which begs the question, how did they know? The Alpha is far more aggressive then he should have been giving her lack of understanding about the supernatural world and her expected disbelief. This section could have benefited from being another 5 chapters long just to build the trust and rapport and give her time to adjust. As is it seemed like from the time of their arrival to the reveal, then to the discovery of the stalker was a time frame of a couple days to a week and that wasn't long enough, IMO. Canon gets abused a bit in this story. Werewolves follow strict rules in pack hierarchy. The idea that an Alpha wolf wouldn't protect his mate with everything he has is ridiculous. A character is taken at one point, the stalker gets in through a weak point in the patrols, but then just walks out to a waiting van...that was where exactly? and how did he get out? Are we to believe she wandered out to be taken in the same window? The climax was weird too, the stalker goes from peeing himself in terror to the next second acting like Rambo and trying to regain the advantage. I experience panic attacks occasionally, I have to think terror is a step above that. So the thought that you just shrug off that level of emotion and react in a different way? is just unbelievable to me. When the alpha appears to save his mate, the sequence is weird. I usually refer to those that get between an alpha and his mate as organ donors, but in this case I guess they either decided to let her handle him, or ...actually I have no idea what the second option was. There were other familial ties that didn't make sense, but I can't list them without giving spoilers and I prefer not to do that. In the moment you just accept the actions and finish the book, it's afterwards your mind will start noticing the inconsistencies and say...what? alot. I know mine did. Having said all that, if you just ignore the inconsistencies then it's a decent tale. As Mate tales go this one is pretty straightforward for the most part. People or things show up at certain intervals to help the story move forward, even though it does seem at some points to be artistic license more than established story line. example. Let's use a Road Runner cartoon, the road runner is caught dead to rights until the anvil falling from the sky takes out the coyote. doesn't make much sense, but allows the story to continue. ( I couldn't think of a section in the story to use that didn't give spoilers) I enjoyed the story and finished it in an afternoon. It doesn't need a sequel, IMO, it fits the bill nicely on its own. I'd rather see the story edited to add more details and time to the story then to see a second one, but that's my own take on it. "
