"The premise is engaging, but the prose often feels more focused on displaying its metaphors than serving the story. When every broken dish and overturned table gets the American Beauty plastic-bag treatment, I start skimming, and that becomes a problem when meaningful details are buried in the flourish. The dried beans and kerosene left behind are important clues; the “grim mosaic” is atmosphere. When both get equal emphasis, the story gets lost in its own imagery. "
