Prologue
Prologue
Today has been a good day. A perfect, beautiful summer day with warm winds stroking my face. It’s really nice to feel after the past winter. I don’t mean to complain… well, actually I do mean to complain. I didn’t like the winter, not one bit but then I have never experienced a winter that I liked. My sister, Ronnie, is the one who likes winters. I never understood why. She used to say she loved the dark but it gets dark in the summer too. Besides that though Ronnie and I are very much alike. Some people even think we’re twins but I’m two years older. Fine… there is one more difference. She’s a zombie and I’m not.
The zombie virus started to spread about three years ago. It wasn’t too long before it got our parents. We saw it happen. Although, there was nothing we could do except hide. After that, it was pretty much just Ronnie and me. It wasn’t like we could go to the authorities and ask for help, they had been gone for months.
We didn’t do so badly. Our parents had taught us how to survive so we just had to keep it up. Which we did until Ronnie got bitten.
That was the worst day of my life. You might think that would have been when I lost my parents but it wasn’t, it was when I lost Ronnie. Or when I thought I lost her. Sure she’s a zombie, which means that she growls instead of speaks and has a preference for biting living things. Apart from that, not much has changed. The virus hasn’t broken our bond. Ronny is always by my side, and she has never tried to hurt me. She has protected me though, on more than one occasion.
I know this isn’t typical zombie behavior, and I have never heard of any other zombie who has acted this way. However, the bond I have with Ronnie is unique. We always had a special bond that no one else could understand, it was like we were the same person. I knew how she felt, and she knew how I felt.
We often knew what the other one was going to say before they said it, which left people trying to join our conversation confused since we would be laughing about the joke before it had been told.
I don’t think Ronnie knows who I am when she looks at me but I do think she knows that I am someone special to her. We’re heading to the city Plaus. Before everything collapsed, I heard reports that a cure was being developed there.
On our way, Ronnie will occasionally bite an animal. No people so far. Although, I can’t really say that we’ve met any. Trying to stay away from the ones that are still out there. I haven’t tried to stop her since I figure she might need the food. Don’t know how long a zombie can go without it and I’m not about to test it on Ronnie. However, she’s going to take that kind of hard when she gets better considering she’s been a vegetarian since she was six. Hopefully, she won’t remember any of this then.
That’s our story up until now. That’s how a fourteen-year-old girl and her twelve-year-old zombie sister came to be out here all by themselves. By the way, I’m Ellie.
