Chapter 1 Act (i)
APRIL 2002
As Juniper sat on the edge of the cliff, her toes dangling over the edge as she gazed out at the endless expanse of the sea. The ocean was her home, her sanctuary, and she couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. She loved the way the waves crashed against the shore, the salty tang of the air, and the endless expanse of the horizon.
As a child of research professors in botany and plant life, Juniper had always been fascinated by the natural world. She loved nothing more than curling up with a good book, diving into the wonders of the earth and its inhabitants. But as much as she loved reading, Juniper had always dreamed of being a writer herself. She yearned to capture the magic of the world around her in words, to share her love of nature with others.
As she sat on the cliff, lost in thought, Juniper was startled by the sound of footsteps behind her. She turned to see her best friend Connie approaching, a wild and carefree spirit who was the complete opposite of Juniper. Connie was estranged from her family and had a reputation for partying and getting into trouble, but Juniper loved her all the same. She knew Connie was hurting inside, and she did her best to support her friend and be there for her.
“Hey, what’s up?” Connie asked, plopping down next to Juniper on the cliff.
“Just thinking,” Juniper replied, turning back to the sea.
“What about?” Connie asked, pulling out a pack of cigarettes and lighting one up.
Juniper shrugged. “Just stuff.”
Connie raised an eyebrow. “Like what?”
Juniper hesitated, feeling a twinge of guilt. She and Connie had always been close, but lately, Juniper had been feeling a bit jealous of her friend’s carefree lifestyle. Connie seemed to be living life on the edge, while Juniper was stuck in a rut, always doing what was expected of her.
“Just stuff,” Juniper repeated, trying to brush off the question.
Connie sighed and took a long drag on her cigarette. “You know, Juniper, you’re always so uptight. You need to loosen up and have some fun.”

PRESENT DAY (Juniper)
My parents just dropped me off for my final year of college at this huge private boarding school, Willow-Wood Academy, named after the two founders Willow mc Jordan and Preston Wood, weird I thought. As I walked around, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed. They want me to be determined and succeed especially become a top earner, just like they had. But the truth was, I was struggling. I had failed a few classes the previous semester and my parents, who hadn’t grown up with as much as they had now, saw this as unacceptable.
So, they made the decision to transfer me to Willow-Wood academy advertised as having a small class, great teachers and one on one tutoring if needed, thinking that the better resources and education would help me turn things around. And while I appreciated their love and concern, I couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to my struggles than just not being in the right place.
I decided to go to my dorm to unpack my belongings and try to get settled into my new surrounding but I couldn’t help but feel like an outsider.
As I stumbled into my new dorm lobby with my dorm keys, my arms overflowing with boxes and bags, I couldn’t help but feel like my life was one big metaphor for my current situation. I was trying to carry too much, struggling to keep everything together as I navigated this new and overwhelming environment.
And then, as if on cue, I tripped over my own feet and crashed into the wall, sending my belongings tumbling to the ground. I groaned in frustration, feeling like a total klutz.
Just as I was about to start gathering my scattered possessions, a voice called out from behind me. “Need a hand?”
I turned to see a tall, attractive boy standing in the doorway, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. He had deep hazel eyes and a messy head of really dark hair, and there was something about him that seemed both mystifying and familiar at the same time.
I hesitated for a moment, not wanting to seem like I couldn’t handle things on my own. But the truth was, I could use all the help I could get. “Yeah, that would be great, thanks,” I said, offering him a grateful smile.
The boy started picking up my boxes and bags with ease, stacking them neatly in a corner. “I’m kai”
“Thanks for helping me out with all of this stuff, Kai,” I said, panting slightly as I picked up the last of my boxes. “I can’t believe I managed to trip and spill everything like that.”
Kai smiled “It’s all good,” he said. “I’m just glad I was here to lend a hand.”
I couldn’t help but feel drawn to him like we were simpatico in some way.
“I’ll go up now to get settled, hopefully, I don’t trip again,” I say as I laughed nervously
“Hopefully,” he said as he went towards the lobby receptionist.
I entered the elevator and went up to my dorm, As I walked into my new dorm room, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of dread. The room was spacious and well-appointed, with a private, king-sized bed in the corner and luxurious touches like plush throw pillows and a plush area rug, it was beautiful but it wasn’t home.
The room was also equipped with an ensuite bathroom, complete with a shower, sink, and toilet. I got a little happy as soon as I saw the mini fridge, at least there is a minifridge just waiting to be stocked with all of my favourite snacks and drinks.
It was definitely not the cramped and dingy dorm room I had been expecting. It was clear that my parent’s decision to transfer me to this fancy university had come with some perks.
As I began to unpack my belongings and settle into my new space, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the opportunity to start fresh, who am I kidding?
I sat on the huge bean bag I brought with me, staring blankly at the white walls that seemed to close in on me. I missed my home life dearly, with its sprawling gardens and endless stretches of sandy beach just a short walk away. My parents had always shown me love and admiration, and I had grown up surrounded by their endless curiosity and passion for research.
As a child, I accompanied my parents on their botanical expeditions, marvelling at the beauty and diversity of the natural world. I had developed a deep love for nature and had spent countless hours exploring the forests and fields around my home with my two dogs, a Labrador and a Border Collie.
But as much as I loved the adventures and freedom of my childhood, I also struggled with the demands of my parents’ work. They were both research botanists, and their schedules were often hectic and unpredictable. I often felt torn between my desire to spend time with my family and my own need for independence and freedom.
Despite these challenges, my home life also had a profound impact on me in positive ways. My parents had always encouraged me to pursue my passions and to challenge myself, and their constant love and support had given me the confidence to take on new challenges.
But now, as I began my first semester of university in my hometown, I found myself struggling to adapt to the new environment. I missed Connie, that girl was always up for a good time and had introduced me to the party scene back home.
I hated change, despised it and found it difficult to adjust to the unfamiliar surroundings of my new dorm room, which is huge but felt small and cramped compared to the spacious, leafy bedroom I had had since I was six years old.
As it was turning night and classes starts tomorrow I decided to lay in bed, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for my home life and all the comforts it offered. I missed the sound of the waves crashing against the shore, the smell of the saltwater in the air, and the warmth of the sun on my skin. I missed the freedom and independence of my childhood and the sense of belonging I had always felt in my own home.

As I logged into my home class the next morning, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of dread wash over me. I woke up late this morning as I always woke up late at 9:00 am but school started at 8:00 am. I barely managed to scarf down a bowl of cereal before picking up my MacBook and a few books and stationery.
I mini-ran to my homeroom, thank goodness we were given a direction app made just for the school or else, I would have missed it.
I. walked into this beautiful homeroom class, homeroom b. I smiled at my homeroom teacher and took an empty seat towards the back. The room is filled with natural light that streams through the large window in front of my desk, and the walls are adorned with colourful posters and diagrams. There are plants scattered throughout the room, adding a touch of nature and greenery.
The desk I’m seated at was a shiny, mahogany oasis in the midst of the chaotic classroom, arranged in a semi-circle around the back of the room.
The atmosphere in the room is relaxed and welcoming, and there is a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect among my classmates.
As I looked at the screen and saw that my home tutor was already there, smiling and welcoming us all to the new year, I couldn’t help but feel like I was already behind.
“Good morning, everyone,” my tutor said, her warm voice filling the classroom. “I’m so excited to get started on this new year and to help you all make it your most successful yet. We have a lot of exciting things planned, and I can’t wait to see what you all accomplish.”
As she spoke, I glanced around the classroom, trying to get a sense of who my classmates were. To my surprise, I saw Kai sitting a few rows ahead of me, his face focused on the screen.
But as I turned to my left, I saw that my seatmate was a goth girl with dark hair and heavy eye makeup. She seemed weird enough, pretty sure that she does her makeup like that to look intimidating, how wannabe, I thought.
As the class went on and my tutor introduced us to the curriculum and expectations for the year. I wasn’t one to turn down a challenge.
my homeroom tutor walked all the way to my desk and turned to me.” we have a new face this year” she smiled “hello juniper?”
“yes juniper” I confirmed with a nervous smile
" I got your name today but we are getting two new girls this year so I had to wing that one” she let out a small laugh
“mmh-mmhh”
“I’m Mrs Thompson, your homeroom tutor, I’m more like your school confidante, a friend if you will” she smiled cheekily “everything between us is confidential, so please tell me your troubles if you have any” she added
“Definitely” I retorted sarcastically
“Good morning, class,” said Mrs Thompson. “I’d like to introduce our new student, Juniper. Juniper, would you like to stand up and tell us a little bit about yourself?”
“I don’t want to” I whispered to her
“you have to darling,” she said sweetly, “it’ll make your classmates know you a bit more”
I hesitantly stood up, feeling my face flush with embarrassment. “Hi, everyone,” she said, trying to keep her voice steady. “I’m Juniper, and I’m from a small town called birch bay. I’m really excited to be here at Willow-Wood Academy ” I said knowing I didn’t mean it and that this is the last place I’d rather be on earth.
“Welcome to the class, Juniper,” Mrs Thompson said with a warm smile. “I’m sure you’ll fit right in here. Why don’t you take a seat and we’ll continue?”
I gratefully sat down, relieved that the introduction was over. This was going to be a long day, i looked over to kai and saw how attractive his face was, really dark hair and piercing deep hazel that seem to look right through your combination is really the “it”. He has an athletic build and an air of enigma about him. He moved with grace and confidence that draws people in.
How lucky it would be to be that attractive, pretty sure he has a girlfriend and girls fawning over him daily, I thought as I turn back to Mrs Thompson talking about something like timetables and teachers. the rest of the day moved in a blur much to my surprise, I enjoyed some classes and liked a few teachers.
